It would be a waste for him to go back for another year. If he was close to earning a degree, I'd get it (Jimmy Vesey), but with 3 more years of college left , there's just no point in going back to a league he'll dominate.

Yup. Notice how none of the CCM line have signed contracts or have even hinted at staying or turning pro yet? Methinks it has everything to do with the possibility of a 2018 expansion draft. All three are highly prized by their respective teams, so I don't doubt that they'll wait until at least the season is over. Let's hope that their "advisors" see the logic in this.

Wait can he sign his entry level within this month, and play in the ahl playoffs? Or is that not ossible. Did the Jets ahl team qualify for playoffs.

:biglaugh: oh that's funny. You're hilarious! :biglaugh:

No the Moose suck. They were basically eliminated a month into the season.

get him in the pros next year... NHL or AHL or whatever... cmon Jets!!!

That would appear to be the plan; GM Cheveldayoff was interviewed during a recent game broadcast and stated they'd already spoken to Connor's reps and family. If their plan is to sign him during the summer... then he can't really say anymore than that right now.

Oh nvm. D jet fans expect him in the nhl next year or give him some games in the ahl to get used to pros.

Edit: I know this not common but it happens. So say he signs with the Jets before the ahl playoffs begin. Could the Jets loan him to another ahl team that is already qualified fo the playoffs. The Marlies got frat tin back on loan from sens ahl team. Conner would get pro games like larkin did last year with the rapids. Only thing is it might be hard for the Jets to have him play for another ahl team with the risk of getting injured while not even wearing a Moose sweater.

Anybody know how many Hobey Baker winners have returned to the NCAA the following season? Can't imagine it being a very big list.

Would love to see Connor in Maize and Blue again next season.

Not sure Connor is ready for the NHL yet (a lot of work to do defensively) but I think he's way too good for the NCAA. I think the AHL will be perfect for him.

Should of clarified I am a big Michigan fan. Of course he is too good for the NCAA, very selfish reasons I want him to stay.

He is NHL ready, his defense on the Wing isn't a big enough concern considering how lethal he is in the neutral/offensive zones.

He seems a bit like Ehlers in terms of reputation. In junior, the concern was that Ehlers wouldn't be good defensively. In the NHL his speed and skill have been so good that he's actually been a very positive contributor to shot metrics, largely because he's very fast back-checking through the neutral zone and he's very skilled at moving the puck smartly resulting in high percentage defensive zone exit and offensive zone entry. As a result, the team doesn't play so much in the defensive zone when he's on the ice. If he were a C, I would be more concerned about his strength and defensive play, but as a winger all he really needs to be good at is: 1) back-check fast; 2) have good positioning in the D zone; 3) have an active and good stick; 4) make smart plays with the puck for zone exit and entry. I don't see any reason why he can't get those right pretty quickly in the NHL. Watching Connor play at the NCAA level, I thought he was very smart at moving the puck in his own zone for zone exits and fantastic at using his speed and puck-handling to have good offensive zone entry.

Can't comment on Ehlers, didn't watch him play. I agree with everything else, great post. My biggest complaint about Connor was his defensive positioning. For lack of a better term he has a tendency to "wander" and lose control of his man.

When he loses the puck in the offensive zone he looks like a fiend looking for another high trying to get it back. Not recklessly or taking penalties mind you, more like that is my puck and I want it on my stick. Doesn't show that in the defensive zone near as much.

Like you said, the important things about defense on the wing can be taught. It is the least responsible position in hockey, he more than makes up for his shortcomings. Which are being blown out of proportion in my opinion.

He's ready to be put in a role similar to Ehlers, if not he should be in the AHL. Its very unlikely he will round out his game at UM, he's too valuable offensively and Berenson is paid to win. Will be interesting if the Jets get 2nd or 3rd as he will have to battle with the Fins for a spot; Or the Jets will be relying heavily on three young wingers in their top 9.

I think that the Jets are going young next season regardless. If they end up with a Finn, I think they'll go with three young wingers in the top-9 for sure. Connor or a Finn will play on the 3rd line (or maybe both). The Jets would have impressive depth with young forwards with fierce competition for roster spots... their under-25 group could be...

Scheifele, Ehlers, Dano, Armia, Connor, Pulju / Laine, Lowry, Burmistrov, Copp, Petan, Tanev, Lemieux, Kosmachuk, etc.

Another way to look at it is that if the Jets pick isn't with the NHL team next year (likely), Connor pretty much has a middle six LW spot gifted to him.

I prefer to look at is as him having a third line spot beside Auston Matthews gifted to him. (I can dream right?)

Anybody know how many Hobey Baker winners have returned to the NCAA the following season? Can't imagine it being a very big list.

Would love to see Connor in Maize and Blue again next season.

Looking at the last 16 Hobey Baker Winners:

2001 - Ryan Miller - Returned to Michigan
2002 - Jordan Leopold - Went Pro
2003 - Peter Sejna - Went Pro
2004 - Junior Lessard - Went Pro
2005 - Marty Sertich - Returned to Colorado
2006 - Matt Carle - Went Pro
2007 - Ryan Duncan - Returned to North Dakota (2 Seasons)
2008 - Kevin Porter - Went Pro
2009 - Matt Gilroy - Went Pro
2010 - Blake Geoffrion - Went Pro
2011 - Andy Miele - Went Pro
2012 - Jack Connolly - Went Pro

2014 - Johnny Gaudreau - Went Pro
2015 - Jack Eichel - Went Pro

Another snub to add to the list! USNDP, WJC, 2015 draft, and now the Hobey Baker.

wow, thought a slam dunk for Connor to win. In his first season putting up Eichel numbers is insane regardless of conference. I love Vesey, a great player who does a lot on his own, and definitely deserving of being in the running, but Connor should have won this in my eyes fairly easily.
