Is it the NHL for Stafloski or he has to back to Europe? Or can he play in the AHL for a few months if that’s best?

My preference as a Devils fan if they draft him is that he's in Utica next year. Can give him a shot to make the squad in camp (no harm) and maybe give him his 9 games, but ultimately i don't think he's ready and I'd rather he be in the AHL than Liiga.

I agree, but is Liiga a league that allows the young drafted guys to play AHL? I'm wondering if he must either be on the Devils or he has to go back to his club team in Liiga?
Devils might surprise and pick Jiricek at two. Hard to pass on the potential of Staflosky, but Jiricek is a for sure top four and likely top pair guy.

I think they go Slaf but Jiricek would be my guy

I was thinking he was not under contract for next year, but it looks like he has one more year left on his Liiga deal, so it may be NHL or Liiga as the only two options. Not sure he can do the AHL.

Assuming Wright goes 1, I think those are the two most likely. Ultimately I agree that it's probably going to be Slaf.

The Erie Otters own Slafkovsky’s CHL rights if he wants to go that route.

Can't see why he'd go the CHL route.

He wants to get into the NHL as soon as possible, so the AHL would provide the best opportunity as well as being best for him developmentally. Doesn't hurt that he'd also be getting paid to play.

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't play in the AHL next year. CHL makes zero sense; a step back for sure.

I wouldn’t be too surprised because I can see him getting thrown into the league right away if he has a solid camp because of the size and draft position. I think that’d be incredibly dumb unless he’s downright dominant but I think it’s a possibility. I’d go at least 1 maybe even 2 AHL years

If he plays in the NHL next season, it will be a mistake.

I'm just wondering, why is everyone so eager to get Slafkovsky to NA after draft? Rantanen at the same age had played about twice as many Liiga games. I think Slafkovsky should still play one more season in Liiga.

Why not bring him over? You have more control over his development and he gets to play a full year on NA ice. I get leaving a player overseas if it’s to stay in their own country rather than come over to play in the AHL. For a guy like Slaf though he already left home years ago to play in Finland so why not come over to the AHL

Slafkovsky is still pretty unexperienced as a Liiga player with "ok", but not great results. My worry would be that going to AHL now would be "moving things too quickly". I think it would be beneficial to stay in a familiar environment, so he can just focus playing hockey.

But I don't think going to AHL next season is a bad idea. He would probably do just fine there.

I also just hope that he would stay in Finland next season because it would make Liiga more interesting to follow. lol.

Don’t follow the Finnish league too closely. Is 10 pts in 31 games for a draft eligible player considered a great season? I know it’s not a crazy scoring league but it seems light. Or is it his size and Olympic performance that has him so highly touted?

No.

How does Slafkovsky compare to Kirby Dach? Both big guys with good hands and kind of "underwhelming" production relative to their draft position. Dach scoring 73 points in 62 games is obviously good, but his draft year production doesn't quite stack up to other highly drafted CHL forwards. Bit similarly how Slafkovsky's draft year production doesn't stack up to other highly drafted Liiga prospects. Though with Slafkovsky that difference in production is more obvious.
