It's funny that people thought be would be a power play specialist. He led all Flames forwards in ice time last night, and I don't think it was the first time.

No he's been up there a few games. He also leads all Flames forwards in +\-. Just hope they don't burn him out later in the year.

It was 24:25 mins that Johnny played last night. Crazy to see him leading all Flames forwards in ice time. Kid is really making strides.

Here's his apple on the tying goal:

Its amazing to watch him play. I watch him in slow mo on my TV - really makes you appreciate his anticipation skills and vision. He makes so many little plays that 98% of the league can't make.

Really fun player to watch, actually with Giordano + Brodie and all the late period comebacks the Flames are up there for best team to watch

is he seriously only 150 lbs?

wow..... for comparison sakes, this kid is clearly better then players comparable to him due to size and age.

Great outlet by Gio and another assist for Huds. :yo:

What's been most fascinating to watch IMO is the interesting catch-22 of having a short reach due to size.

While he amazingly makes more poke checks and takeaway plays than someone of his size ought, there are still many times when the reach of a larger player ahead of him is simply too great to make a play on. While he was flailing away a lot at the start of the season, he has pretty much come to terms with the fact that sometimes he's at a disadvantage and lets someone else take care of that and positions himself for a future pass instead.

That small reach becomes an advantage close in though, when the smaller radius of his puck handling due to size + skill is simply so much faster than most larger players. He not only can think at a high level, but his size means he can literally beat even skilled larger players out more often than not close in.

The plays where he sucks larger players in close to him and out of position and then beats them with a quick pass to the location where they ought to be is where JG is going to earn his payouts.

He's still learning too... over the last few games he's started hanging out often behind the net, and has realized that he has a huge advantage there. I suspect he will make further discoveries about the advantages of being small and take his game to another level.

I like Gaudreau but he certainly didn't undress Vlasic there at all. Vlasic played that perfectly, he knows Gaudreau is a slippery player so he just contained him to the back of the net until Gaudreau was forced to pass it to a player who himself was not in a dangerous position at all.

Sky is the limit for Johnny. His anticipation and vision must be top 10ish in the NHL already.

Last night was about the 4th or 5th game where it was obvious he could have had 3+ points. It's only a matter of time before he has a 3+ game and starts to cut into FF's lead.
