Naw, it hurts all teams and it comes around, Jimmy Hayes wouldn't sign with us and we smartly traded his rights before they became worthless. Its a bit extreme to lock someone who doesn't opt into a draft for them to hold their rights for over 4 years. Now if the NHL forced you to opt into the draft like the NBA it'd be a different story.
Actually it hurts small market and non traditional markets more. The draft is the life blood for these teams and when you can not draft college kids because of this rule it ties your hands. It benefits larger and traditional markets, Wheeler left Arizona for Boston, Reilly left Columbus for Minnesota, Now Vesey is leaving for a larger market. Shultz left Anaheim for Edmonton. Only once has a large or traditional market lost out due to this rule. It was Hayes but he left Chicago for New York

“When my season ends at Harvard, I would really like to sign [with Nashville] next spring and get some pro experience before heading into training camp [in 2016]. If the opportunity is right to sign here in Nashville, then it is going to be a no-brainer.”
LIAR!!!!

To remove it you probably have to make the draft an opt in, which would hurt non-traditional markets more. Imagine Lindros just not entering the draft til a team he liked had the top pick? Nords would get no where close to the value they got by drafting and trading him.

I'll be the devils advocate here.

I've read 4-5 posters already say "I feel bad for Preds fans", or "sucks to be a Preds fan".

Know what I haven't seen?

An angry Preds fan.

Not a hockey market, which is the primary reason Vesey wants to play for Toronto, Boston, or Chicago.

Can't say I blame him if he's just not feeling like Nashville is the place he particularly wants to lay roots.
Big (huge) life decision and he intends to see it through on his own terms, good for him.

I am a very angry one and go to this thread

Quit with this whole "Not a real hockey market" garbage. He'll be boo'ed relentlessly here like Suter.

Vesey seems intent on going to Toronto and ruining his career. Good luck bud. say hi to that Hanson brothers kid

That thread is an absolute cesspool of vitriol...hope you guys find what you are looking for in life

The guy has a window and he's choosing to enter it. Not as if he is precedent setting or shattering, here, either. Some people need some light in their lives..

No, I'm not a Leafs fan

Lol I sense some jealousy. Sucks for Nashville fans but Vesey will soon be on his way to Toronto or Boston. Not sure how playing under Babcock, one of the best coaches in the NHL, would ruin his career. Also helps that his father is employed by the Leafs.

These sort of moves seem to happen once every couple of years. Sucks for Nashville but hopefully it works out for the Leafs.

And where does this general consensus" come from? Boston fans?

Those days were the best; I still remember that stuff like it was yesterday.…

With the first pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft … the Boston Bruins are proud to select … from North Reading, Mass. … Jimmy Vesey.

Beyond hockey, staying for my senior year has given me the opportunity to graduate from Harvard. One of the things I’m most proud about is that I’m from Boston. I come from a long line of blue-collar Bostonians.… City people — that’s who we are. Not many people in my family have had the chance to go to college, so I like to think that when I get my Harvard degree this spring, it’ll be a testament to all of their hard work, because I definitely know I didn’t get here by myself.

Obviously, you can't go in anyone's head and tell what they want or where they'll go, but in his Tribune piece he made a big deal out of being from Boston. Based on the available evidence (little, basically only these quotes and the fact that his dad and brother are both involved in the Leafs org.), that's what you'd think.

its really embarrassing some of you ripping this kid for doing what all of us want to do and that is to have the opportunity to choose where we work and live. I can understand being upset about how this came to be but I can't understand people ripping him for doing this. It's in the CBA and within his rights.

Also....Vesey, Matthews, Zaitsev, Stamkos...BRING IT! ;)

LIAR!!!!

"if the opportunity is right"

you should look up what that means

I don't have a problem with this if he doesn't lie to poile about it and is up front and says "yeah I want to play in boston or toronto" but to lie about it is disgraceful. Suter 2.0

Players can handle this with class or choose to lie through their teeth. I have no respect for the latter

It is my right to boo him also. $uter and Vesey lied the whole time and deserves ever boo they get. Josi's better than $uter anyways.

So they lied....get over it.
The fact you guys still boo...years later shows how petty it is, and how ******** you still are. If Josi is so much better, then you shouldn't need to boo anyway.
It's Free Agency...lying is part of it. Boo hoo.

LIAR!!!!

I believe Toronto's lost two players this way. Billy Sweatt was one, forget the other. It is not solely a small market only problem. We get it, you're mad your team lost the guy, eventually all teams will lose a player or two this way.

Looks like Jimmy is Hogtown bound from everything I'm reading.

My heart goes out to Nashville fans, this is a tough one.

I'd personally choose Nashville over Toronto every time; love the Music City!

I'm trying to look at the situation as objectively as possible, which is hard considering that I'm a Leafs fan and want Vesey badly. But honestly I don't think he deserves the character shots being thrown at him by so many, including Poile himself. He seems like a really smart guy and a class act based on the article he wrote in the Players' Tribune and what I've heard about him. When he started at Harvard I'm sure his intention wasn't to screw Nashville over, but now that he's finishing his college career and remains unsigned, he had to weigh his options and see where he thinks his future could be brightest. I'm sure he talked to friends and family a lot about this, and simply decided Nashville isn't the right fit for him. His choice to test free agency is completely legal and it's a route that players have taken before him. It is totally within his rights to make this decision.

All of that being said, if he was drafted by the Leafs and did something like this to us I know I'd be furious. Thus, I can definitely sympathize with you Preds fans. I just don't think he deserves the relentless hate he's getting.

Salty huh. Toronto has the best coach in the game, a young building team, and a high end pick with the last two years as well. We have space for him to play in a top-6 role and develop in it as well.

It'll probably be investigated for tampering if he signs with toronto
