Definitely inconclusive results tonight. Hopefully he gets a few more games where the Wings aren't taking a convoy to the penalty box so he can get regular shifts

Yep, he had a few really nice shifts in the first period where he showed off his hands. As the Wings were constantly on the PK though his ice-time dried up and he didn't get a chance to really show his skills. Needs to get off the Franzen and Bert line though, that's asking for trouble.

So what's the high end of his potential looking like? In the preseason he looked like he a young Datsyuk. Amazing elusiveness, but too easy to knock off the puck. It was obvious he had great hockey sense and the development of his strength I feel is crucial as to how great he will become.

I'm predicting a top 6 winger with the potential to become a top 10 winger in the NHL. Not saying he reaches his potential, but what does everyone else think? Is he comparable to Datsyuk when Datsyuk was first breaking into the league? Or is he more of a Flippula type of player?

It might just be the homer in me, but I think/hope ~70 points in his prime.

To me hes not quite on Datsyuk level but there might be about 5 prospects in the league that have that potential really.

He definitely has a similar skill set though. Filppula has a pretty unreal skill set and can dazzle and dangle while playing 2 way hockey but he doesnt have great finish.

Nyquist is a natural finisher who also plays wing so I expect him to be better than Flip.

70ish points is what I would think but you never know, he could turn into a datsyuk or a Filppula for what all us HFers know. Hes DYNAMIC though and is putting up a ppg on a terrible AHL team that cant score in his rookie year

Nyquist reminds me more of a high-octane Nicklas Backstrom type player.

I mean, what is location, really

I know this is a terrible thing to say about a Wings prospect, but he reminds me a bit of Patrick Kane. He's an undersized winger who leans toward passing more than shooting, with some very good puck handling skills. The biggest similarity is that they both have the ability to absolutely fool other players and make unexpected plays.

up to 8+18 in 23 AHL games so far this year

8th in AHL scoring(and 2nd among rookies with 1 less point than Cory Conacher in 1 less game)

So impressed by this kid. He's sooo good. Can't wait to see him on DRW next year ;).

Ah man almost every team in the NHL would have Nyquist and Smith as regulars at this point but Detroit so a bit frustrating to have to wait (especially for their fans).

How's he comparing to Tatar btw (better by the numbers but noticeably better in-game?).

Nyquist is better right now not just because of the numbers but his poise and savvy at the AHL level shows that he's better by a pretty significant margin. Sometimes he just looks like the best player on the ice for both teams.

At the same time, it's not exactly a fair comparison. First of all Nyquist is older and spent three years at Maine where he got to grow and develop his offensive game according to the NA rink and style. Nyquist himself said that his first AHL experience was quite an eye opener since he wasn't nearly allowed to play as much run and gun as he did in college.

When Tatar made the move to NA, the Wings wanted him to play in the OHL. However, he made such a great impression then that he made their AHL team instead. GR didn't really need him but Tatar beat out the competition and forced his way onto the team. Grand Rapids is where Wings prospects not only find out if they can skate and play a two-way game that covers the whole 200 feet of ice but also if they can do it for 82 games. He didn't really have those 2-3 years of experience where he didn't have to focus on defense as much like Nyquist did. So who knows what kind of numbers he'd be putting up if he had that experience?

Then agan, Tatar still has good numbers right now and plays as a top-six forward in GR. This season should most definitely be his last in GR and he'll have to make the Red Wings team out of camp next year.

I think Tatar and Nyquist are playing on the same line right now. Surely they're both learning from each other.

Nyquist is much better.

Tatar looks to be a solid complimentary top 6 guy with finish but he doesnt seem to create a tonne of offense for himself.

Nyquist is just dynamic as hell, there will be times where he'll skate laps of the offensive zone like forsberg used to, just waiting for an opening than he capitalizes.

I dont miss many Grand Rapids games and the mroe I watch the kid the better he seems. I think those people saying the wings dont have an elite forward in their prospect pool to replace Datsyuk and Zetterberg are going to be upset once this kid hits his prime

Thought him and Chris Conner were the best players on the ice in the game against the OKC Barons. Surprisingly with all their vets, the Griffins are a rather meh team on ice. Must be coaching?

B.Smith didn't wow me, but I probably need to watch more GR games.

IMHO Nyquist is still two years away from being the top 6 guy we all think / know he'll be. I think Murask and Tatar will get their shot first.

Your point, besides stating the obvious?

You know his point. Nyquist impressed more in camp, he has played better in the AHL, he has already been called up. He will probably be a regular on the Wings before Tatar or Mursak.

Mursak would be a regular on the Wings already if not for his injury
