I'm not a fan of Kaliyev's playing style but my philosophy is generally that you can't argue with those kinds of numbers. Disregarding numbers is what got Debrincat drafted in the 2nd round.

I still prefer Harley from the OHL and I think Tomasino will have an amazing development curve over the next couple years but I can't argue against Kaliyev being at least very close to 1st out of the OHL

Kaliyev and Tippett are very different hockey players. Tippett is a better skater, Kaliyev is a better playmaker and has a higher hockey IQ.

He's not that similar to Wahlstrom either, aside from their goal-scoring. Tippett and Wahlstrom are pretty similar players. Great goal-scorers, but low hockey IQ and not the best playmakers. Wahlstrom also has a tendency to slack in the defensive zone and doesn't use his good skating to his advantage. Kaliyev's compete level may be similar to Wahlstrom, and the skating likely doesn't play much worse than Wahlstrom's, but Kaliyev is a better playmaker and has a better hockey IQ.

Such a weird player, he looks like an absolute beast. Almost 50 goals, seems like a top 15 pick. Then I read this board and a lot of people talk down on his because his skating is below average and he should be an early 2nd round pick.

Biggest gamble of the 2019 Draft.

Hamilton Bulldogs have played in the OHL since 15-16 season.

In their 1st season they finished 17th in the OHL with 25-35-8-0 record
2nd season: improved to 33-27-4-4 record and finished 11th, but got eliminated in the first round
Last season they surprised all, they surely were not one of the contenders, they won their Conference
and finished 3rd in the OHL, the surprise didn't end there, Bulldogs won the OHL championship.

This season has been more of a between 1st and 2nd season, they are currently 15th and qualifying
to the post season.

Bulldogs so far have not had a competitive rosters in their time in the OHL,
its the case this season as well.

Best (notable) players in Bulldogs history: Robert Thomas, Matthew Strome, Brandon Saigeon
Mackenzie Entwistle, Riley Stillman, Nicolas Mattinen and of course Arthur Kaliyev.

18-19 top 10 scorers (forwards)

1. Arthur Kaliyev : 50g+47a=97 pts (1.59 ppg)
2. Matthew Strome: 27g+49a=76pts (1.20 ppg)
3. Brandon Saigeon: 25g+38a=63pts (1.57 ppg)
4. Logan Morrison: 12g+17a=29pts (0.69 ppg) - 16 year old rookie
5. Mackenzie Entwistle: 15g+12a=27pts (0.93 ppg)
6. Jan Jenik: 11g+16a=27pts (1.22 ppg) - 18 year old 1st year player from Czech Republic
7. Isac Nurse: 14g+9a=23pts (0.36 ppg)
8. Tim Fleischer: 7g+10a=17pts (0.27 ppg) - 18 year old 1st year player from Germany
9. Lian Van Loon: 9g+7a=16pts (0.35 ppg) - 17 year old rookie
10. Avery Hayes: 6g+10a=16pts (0.27 ppg) - 16 year old rookie

- Saigeon (Oshawa) played in 40 games
- Entwistle (Guelph) played in 29 games

So its not like Arthur has gotten much support this season, yet already has amassed 50 goals
and most likely 100+ points before the regular season ends, nuts good numbers if you ask me.

If scouts & fans are dismissing him because of his "poor" skating ability and some other minor details,
then they are making a huge mistake, in my opinion. You can always learn how to skate better,
become a better skater and work out your what ever minor stuff you gotta work out before turning pro,
but you can't teach what he has, is and what he haves and is, is hell of a lot more
what of his "short comings" in his game.

I think he should be a top 10, top 12 pick in the upcoming 2019 NHL entry draft
and not 20-31 overall pick, as the Future Considerations, McKeens hockey and ISS hockey rank him.
or 2nd round for that matter.

I'm pretty sure i'm not alone with this matter though :)

It’s his questionable IQ and skating. And no, you pretty much can’t become an elite skater if you have pretty bad skating at 18. Of course you can get better, but major changes are really hard to make.

I like him as a prospect, but the guys in the top 15 are way more capable of making it big in the NHL than him.

I feel like any time people bash a player's "intensity" or "compete level" it's just another way of saying they aren't fast.

I personally believe he's underrated, just wouldn't take the risk of picking him in the top-10. He's a high-risk, high-reward kind of guy.

Not sure where questionable IQ is coming from. I strongly disagree with that.

His skating needs work, but I agree with OP, I would take him 8-12 range, possiby earlier, and anything later would be a steal imo.

I'd say he's underrated because the "low IQ, bad skating" stuff got into the echo chamber and is now discussed with a ton of hyperbole.

He absolutely does not have low hockey sense. If you watch him play, he's incredibly smart in the offensive zone. He's the best player at finding soft spots in coverage in the offensive zone that I've seen in the OHL for a quite awhile. He struggled with decision making in the neutral zone and I think that's where most of the low IQ stuff came from, but he's improved greatly in that regard.

As for skating, I think it's just a general issue with the scouting community right now. There seems to be the idea that players are either elite skaters or bad skaters. Nothing in between. He's not a bad skater. He isn't a speedster, but he has no issues getting around. Along with that, he isn't a guy who relies on skating to score most of his goals. In-zone offense is going to be his bread and butter.

The defense and compete level in the defensive end is a concern, but I guess it comes down to how much do you weigh that against the offensive ability of a guy who will likely finish the season with more goals in an U18 season in the OHL than anyone other than Tavares and Stamkos in the last 20 years.
