Wait another year, and Benning should trade a second for him :D

Bumping this thread because Mantha is looking good so far in training camp and had a really strong game last night against Chicago.

Scores the 1st goal and is highly involved in creating the 3rd:

Bounceback year incoming?

That was indeed a great game from him. Hopefully he will continue to impress for the rest of the preseason, and I'm the AHL

His talent is obvious. Needs to put it all together consistently, which he appears to be improving on.

That's Mantha.

He started slow in Midgets.

Started slow in the Q.

Started slow in pro hockey.

Yep I agree, hes a guy thats taken time to adjust everywhere. By all accounts hes been great at camp and was probably Detroits best player last night. He saw a sport psychologist this summer which may have helped as well.

That Pulkkinen goal in the highlights was a really dominant shift for Mantha as well before that clip. He seemed to have the puck the whole time. And he blows by the defender leading up to that goal, you can really see why he is so highly touted. Skating and shooting like that in a 6'5 frame, if he puts it all together hes going to be great

Still a very good prospect ,Detroit will develop him properly .It may take some time but he will get there

The adjustment period sounds about right, its happened to him at all levels.

Takes him awhile to figure things out.

RW - Anthony Mantha (2013, 20st, DET)

So....how about this Anthony? Where are those posters with their reports about how bad a player he was and how dissapointing he was and a possible bust too? Everybody back on the bandwagon?

6 points in 5 games still ongoing...Yeah, I know...still just preseason. Yet....pretty sure that the same people who were on his case would not have bet he could have had this kind of preseason. This kid will get it going and be a key player for the Wings.

It's OK preseason play is the greatest predictor of future success

Yeah, just like the 1st pro year of a kid, after the said kid comes back from a leg injury. Just as relevant for the future.

I was impressed with his defensive side of the game tonight against a veteran Leafs team. Him scoring a goal and an assist was a nice touch, too.

His known knocks are being addressed, which is a good sign for his NHL future.

Please give full credit where it's due.... Kid had a Gordie tonight

Have the comments Devellano made about him last spring come up at all during pre-season, or has everyone moved on (at least outwardly) from that?

To me Devellano's comment was a head scratcher. Mantha wasn't dominating the AHL by any means, but he did exceptionally well under the circumstances and adversity he had to face. Blashill always praised him and he looked good in the games I've watched... seems like Devellano's comment came out of the left field under the circumstances. Maybe Devellano had unrealistic expectations? I don't know.

Like most prospects, Mantha has areas of the game he needs to work on. But you can see he's taking strides to becoming a more complete hockey player and has always been a team player and listens to his coach. He wants to be in an NHLer someday, and he's working hard to get there.

To answer your question, no I don't think the comments Develano made came up.

I mean do the other NHL players ever feel strange that he called them all cattle? Jim Devellano was a great hockey mind and he still might be a decent amount of the time. But lately for the last several years he basically has drunk uncle moments from the SNL skit. The Mantha comments were in keeping with that and were never taken that seriously by most Detroit fans because of who said them.

I don't think his skills have been questioned, mostly his work ethics.

He has started this year on the right foot, but he will need to keep working hard all year. Hopefully the switch has turned on for him that he can't just go by his skills at the pro level.

I think this preseason was what he needed to get the confidence going early and get the year started right. I think hes gonna have a pretty big year in the AHL this year probably on al ine with Athanasiou and Bertuzzi. Lots of PP time if he keeps his head on right and plays both ends of the ice. Last night he had a Gordie Howe hatrick, hes not really the type that fights per se but for a skilled player he can get mean and will stick up for himself and other players. Last night he went after Panik for the hit on Bertuzzi and although unwilling at first gave Holland a few good shots

And today he was cut.....yet it doesn't mean he was playing badly. Kid will be a good one in the very near future. People in here was already judging him only based on his stats last year. Which was plain stupid.

Getting cut was a surprise to no one. If he's lighting up the AHL this season expect some call-ups throughout the season. Getting cut had more to do with Detroit's depth at forward than Mantha's preseason/training camp.
