Another game that i was gonna go but end up not going. Damn! What A game. No No from Detmers! Offense crushing! This is with Ward out of the lineup too.

That position player pitching for the Rays was throwing batting practice pitches. What happened there?

Love hearing that Bro Hymm song every time they hit a HR.

Well that was a game and a half. This team giving us reason to believe?
Yes. In 2002 the Angels had amazing things happen out of nowhere as a sign that it was a season to believe in except there wasn't any no hitters but there was 5'2 David Eckstein hitting a Grand Slam in consectitive back to back games, it was just crazy ! and he ended up leading the majors in grand slams that year lol. They would go on tears where they destroyed everyone and yet they couldn't catch up to the Oakland A's for the division title.
The 2002 Moneyball Oakland Athletics couldn't get out of the 1st round lol.

Kind of crazy this is happening 20 years later. I didn't expect the Angels to even be .500 this year and the same was the case for the 2002 team, they weren't expected to be good.

Last season, things looked promising to start the season as we kept up with hitting despite the bad pitching. We lost Trout and Rendon for most of the season last year too. I thought if they were healthy, then we might have had a chance to finish above .500.

Last Season: 77 wins, 85 losses, 0.475 win %. RS = 723, RA = 804, Run Diff = -81.

Trout only played in 22.2% and Rendon played in only 35.8% of the total games played last year. I went back two seasons, 2019 season, to see how much they played in a normal season when healthy and it was 82.7% for Trout and 90.1% for Rendon. Using last year's runs scored (RS) and RBIs, I extrapolated that production using 2019 games played to see how much they would have produced if they were healthy. Could the team overcome a -81 Run Differential?

With both healthy, the Angels could have had a positive Run Differential last year.

Come this off-season, GM Minisian was able to focus monies on an improved bullpen with the acquisition of Loup and re-signing Raisel Iglesias. We were bargain hunting againg for starting pitching in Thor and were going to hope our young gun Detmer would take the next step forward. Still, everything would depend on our hitting b/c that's where most of our assets are invested within.

Lost in all this was DFA'ing Pujols for Jared Walsh at 1B. That's growing offense. What I didn't think could happen was Taylor Ward finding a groove! The Angels have very good hitters going 6 deep in Trout, Ohtani, Ward, Walsh, Rendon, and Marsh.

Current Record: 21 wins, 11 losses, 0.656 win %, RS = 162, RA = 115, Run Diff = +47

There's actually enough depth offensively this season! Pitching... I'm still skeptical, but it's looking great early!

In the first two games, our starters didn't last long.

Vs Tejas
Gm 1: Thor didn't even last a whole inning as he gave up 6 runs after the Angels spotted him 3 runs in the top of the first. But our offense was shutdown the rest of the innings with generating only 1 run.
Angels 4, Tejas 7.
Gm 2: Detmers, the young no-hitter pitcher, lasted only 3 and 2/3rds inning. We already abused our bullpen in game one and we did it again here. It was a no-decision for Detmers as the game was tied 3-3 at the end of 4 innings. Going into the bottom of the 8th inning, Angels had a one-run lead, but the bullpen gave up 7 runs.
Angels 5, Tejas 10.
Gm 3: Ohtani went 6 innings. Offense stormed back in the top of the 9th to tie it and added one at the top of the 10th. Unfortunately, closer Raisel blew another save by giving up a 2-run HR. bleah.
Angels 5, Tejas 6

Vs A's
Gm 1: Surprised the pitching group gave up only 4 runs considering we threw out another no-name pitcher to start. Only used three pitchers in this game. Our offense was held in check... scary.
A's 4, Angels 2

4-game losing streak. bleah.

The Angels bullpen is back to being, well, the Angels bullpen.

Doesn’t help that Joe Maddon can’t manage it to save his life. 8th inning with a one-run lead after Trout swung the momentum, and he goes with Barraclough who hasn’t pitched in 8 days and a struggling Loup against the same part of the order he couldn’t get out last night

Our strengths going into this season was our hitting, if healthy, and our bullpen.

I thought our bullpen would have been our stronger part of the pitching game with Loup and Raisel, but both have been blowing saves like it's there's a birthday party every other day.

Sadly, our offense has been tamed as well. That's a terrible combo of blowing saves and lack of run support from a team built upon hitting.

Can't really complain, though, since teams go through slumps and runs often. It's mitigating the slumping that Maddon needs to get a hold on. We're in a 4-game losing streak right now. Fortunately, the Astros have lost two games in a row. We're still in 2nd place in the AL West and currently have the 6th best record in the AL. If we beat the Blue Jays tonight, then we move up to 5th best in the AL.

Anaheim better be teeing off on Berrios early in the game with Sandoval pitching for us. We need more offense, though.
