Translation: "I know we could be better in just about every area of the game, but we got lucky with a couple guys last year, so we're expecting to get lucky with some guys this year."

Meanwhile, Dipoto’s got a pretty good team with a borderline-top 5 prospect pool incoming and Billy Eppler looks pretty passable now that he’s a star puller employed by a new sugar daddy who will actually spend the money he was promised would be available here.

Have zero idea why anyone would willingly come here to work for Arte

"No limitations" Perry says as he takes the bullet, while Arte hides behind him. Arte was pretty accommodating with the media in his early days as owner, when everyone seemed to worship him. Now that he's not the universal good guy, he's not so publicly visible. With him it's all about image and perception. That's why he loves those big FA signings, so he can sit up on that stage like king shit and act like a hero. Anything that doesn't create headlines (like scouting and development) he doesn't care about, and spends on it accordingly.

A really stark contrast to the Ducks ownership. They're perfectly fine not getting a bunch of press and letting smart people do their job and not stick their nose in everything while providing the resources to succeed. I know it's not an apples to apples comparison to the different leagues, but the Samueli's are great team owners even though the team isn't doing well in recent seasons.

Both Dipoto and Eppler were able to land ace pitchers. Dipoto traded for Ray and Eppler locked down Scherzer. Both did add more to their respective teams this off-season.

All Minisian was able to do under Moreno was to solidify our bullpen with LHP Loup and re-signing RHP Raisel Iglesias. We took another flyer on a pitcher looking to rebound in Syndegaard.

Owner Moreno is the reason the Angels can't forge ahead. I still don't like Eppler's drafting, though.

My wife was recruited, a good number of years ago now, to work for the Clippers and Donald Sterling. Being a bright lady she turned down the job offer. And so should anyone offered a job by the Angels turn it down unless they are absolutely desperate to work in baseball. The Angels are dysfunctional and are not being built to win.

Good news: I really like the Tepera signing and Archie Bradley is a nice buy-low candidate this late. I know that bullpens are notoriously volatile, but I feel like the Angels have 3 competent, trustworthy late-inning guys for the first time in god knows how long.

Bad news: There is no indication that the Angels have anything brewing trade-wise for a controllable starter and the top-end section of free agent starting pitchers (Rodon down IMO) have been cleaned out. Even if Syndergaard rebounds, there's a maximum of two guys in the rotation who can consistently give you six innings; they're gonna be ridden hard again.

I hate Arte's refusal to spend on anything but high-end position players, but he might as well go all-in on one of Story or Correa to show me he still cares bare minimum

Potentially 4 competent, trustworthy late-inning guys in Tepera, Bradley, Loup, and Iglesias. = )

That would move some of our other relief pitchers to be more of middle relief just in case our starters get demolished early.

On the plus side, we know we have the offense to be in a shootout, but now we might have the 7th-9th inning locked down shut. I don't know if that is enough to get us back to the playoffs, but maybe enough to finally finish above .500?

The starting pitching is a bit tough, but I am okay not overpaying for the starters right now. Lets stop spending for a year and see how the young guys continue to develop. Remember, you can always trade at the deadline if the team is contending. I would rather do that take a risk on an aging veteran starter signed for multiple years.

Imagine saying this to Mike Trout, who will 31 years old in August and played 11 seasons for the Angels, where the last time he was in the playoffs was 2014. "Hey, Mike. We're not going to get top end pitching. We'll see where we're at near the trade deadline to see if we need to grab a pitcher."

Owner Arte will spend, spend, spend on big bats. Spending big cash for a big arm? Arte avoids it. Former GM Dipoto got around that by trading away hitters for young pitching. The next GM, Eppler, stopped acquiring near-MLB pitching, didn't draft enough pitchers with his first round picks, and opted for scrap bin pitcher deals. Pissed away 5 seasons there. Our current GM should trade a high end positional prospect for a high end pitching prospect at near-MLB level. But he did draft like 20 pitchers in a row last year, traded for closer in Raisel last year as well as retain his services, and added three more bullpen pieces.

It’s actually been great outside of 1 game. The offense and defense, however, have been embarrassing.
i am amazed at how bad adell still looks defensively.....he legit reminds me of someone who played infield there whole life and is being transitioned into an outfielder.....he looks lost and i hope it comes around or his bat can justify him being in the outfield.

Why does it seem like the announcers are several seconds behind each play?

Are they still not traveling with the team?

It’s really bad tonight.
