Bowen was great when he needed to be. London has done a good job in protecting him and allowing very few Grade A chances. That doesn’t scream amazing goaltender, but he comes through when he had to last night and that’s all we really need. Not every year will we have the defensive corps to help him out. A lot more to develop in Bowen, but he’s on the right track. I have a feeling we could have put Medvedev in or Willmore in and we still would have won last night.

Reminds me of Jake Patterson coming in during the Finals. Not an amazing goalie, but made great saves when we needed them, he was a little lucky, and boom we won the OHL Championship.
I thought Bowen was pretty steady last night. Seemed in control and calm and focused. Disagree that The outcome would have been the same with Medvedev or Willmore. Give the kid some credit. He played well. Made some big save when needed and clearly is gaining some confidence. Wonder if BB has been working with him on his puck handling b/c it's really improved from the regular season imo.

Let me clarify, Bowen is clearly better than Willmore and Medvedev, but there was very little Grade A scoring chances against the Knights. Bowen was great when he needed to be and that all we need.

I thought Bowen played really well last night and his puck handling has really improved in just the last few games, in the 2nd period he made a quick up on the PP and looked similar to a play Brochu would have made.

But I do agree, the team played a very very good defensive game in front of him. Bowen still really needs to work on his rebound control, but I think the team is more aware of this now and have really tightened up in front of the net and are better at clearing those rebounds. A couple of the big saves he made last night, were the direct result of poor rebounds. A lot of desperation saves by goalies are the result of bad rebounds and while the saves look great, they aren't ideal. But with that said, he did play great and is now playing with confidence and improving every game. During the season I saw 3 main weaknesses in his game, Rebound Control, Puck Handling and Long Shots. I would say he has improved all 3 of these in his playoff run.

On to Saturday to try and get the series up to 2-0!

Medvedev cannot even play yet and people are saying he’s better than Bowen? Man this kid must be good! Looking forward to watching him

Great to see Julien contribute. Bowen played well and will grow into a great starter the next few years. Still awful at handling the puck..best to just stay in your net. McCue's brother was stapled to the bench for the Petes. Still playing hockey at this time of the year is amazing!!
Last I checked goalies get paid to stop the puck..not be the 3rd defenceman. If they can do it...good...but it's not a deciding factor on how good a goalie is

Dominik Hasek called....he'd like a word with you. Tyler Parsons was one of the most athletic goaltenders to ever wear a Knights uniform...guess he gave up a lot of bad rebounds.

The new hybrid pads make it very difficult to dictate where the puck will go on a save. Everything is so lightweight today nothing just hits and sticks anymore

I’m excited to watch Fagen if he does end up signing. A physical and smart dman is always welcomed

We need to win the next game and then split in PBO to stand a good chance in this thing.

Who had Julien at almost a half point per game pace this far into the playoffs? Kid has made big strides. He’s a top 6er next season!

I don't know if a goal tender can really control rebounds all that well, perhaps from point shots where he has more time to set up his save but from up close, I doubt it. His premier objection is to stop the puck by placing himself square to the shooters and make himself as big as he can. He might be better at following where the puck is heading after a save to make himself ready for a rebound shot, and a couple time I thought he did that fairly well.

Hasek is a unicorn, lets get silly and compare him to anyone.
Parsons, yes very athletic, but also a very aggressive goalie. He attacked angles a lot more then you would traditionally see, which sometimes certainly lead to those big athletic split saves.

You can't blame rebounds on equipment. If that was the case, every goalie with the same equipment would struggle with rebounds, which simply is not the case. Its not about hit and stick, its about direction. A slight adjustment to the angle of the bad can leave a rebound in the slot or in the corner, nothing to do with the equipment its self.

I'm not saying he was bad, I just think for him to continue his development, this is something to continue to work on. I actually thought he played a really good game, I am just expanding on some of the critical points of other posters.

The video below, may not be the best example because its a push from the corner and those are very hard to control rebounds on, just because of timing. But it is a rebound directly back into the slot, which then leads to him having to make a desperation, athletic save. Elite goalies, are very good at directing these away, which makes them look boring. But boring is good, if the puck is staying out of the net.

Goalies can absolutely control where rebounds go, its all about puck tracking, glove and pad direction. Once they have made the direction, it is then like you said about following the puck. You are right, at the end of the day, their job is to stop the buck, but they can certainly make their lives easier by limiting high scoring chances with quality rebound control.

Again though, I do agree, Bowen did ready himself very well last night. But I think he could have helped himself out a few times by directing those rebound away from high danger areas. I do think he has imprvoed at this from his first start of the year, just being critical as I want the Knights to succeed.

Rookie London goaltender Zach Bowen’s puck-playing will be an important factor in the series, especially at square-cornered Peterborough Memorial Centre. Injured Brett Brochu is one of the best at it in junior hockey, but the 18-year-old from Kanata made a great pass up ice to catch the Sting for a goal in Game 5. “He’s very cagey,” London goalie coach Daren Machesney said. “He does a good job with it and he will have to continue to do that for us to be successful.”

Dang Lev Katzin could have been convinced…

Fifth round pick Lev Katzin will be attending the Guelph Storm orientation camp this weekend. Highly-regarded centre previously signed tender to play with USHL Green Bay Gamblers next season.

I thought London was the only team who "circumvented" the draft and got USHL bound players to commit?? Just ask other teams fans, they will tell you!

Looks like Moore is not coming by camp roster.

Not a surprise. Hoping the year after next as the earliest ( if at all ) for Moore joining the Knights. At least that what birdies were whistling ( Not that Moore will, but IF he did it would be a year)
Worth the 1 year wait if the Knights staff can make it happen.

Guelph’s done all right with US recruits or players looking like they’re going to play USHL/U-18. Even going back to Anderson, Brown, Callahan. Pastujov was a late pick. Good to get top talent in the league regardless of the team.

Not a bad dev camp roster, O’Reilly, Nichol should both dominate…. They are almost locks for next year

I'm having a hoot reading some of the posts on the Petes page. Now, granted, we're only one game in but some of the funnier posts read like this (and I'm paraphrasing):
"We only dressed 17 skaters, which is pretty much a forfeit" (Ummm, we dressed 18, so what?)
"London should have clobbered the Petes, but they didn't" (Ummm, it was 3-0)
"We're dealing with a lot of injuries" (Yeah, so are all the teams in the playoffs)
"Wait until we get our Captain back" (cuz that worked so well for Kitchener.
"We can beat London easily, we just need to score" (No SH!T)
"Their goalie isn't as good as ours, just has a good defense in front of him" followed by
"All we have to do is break down London's Defense, and we'll start dominating" (Just like OS, Kit and Sarnia did, right?)

The game was a feeling out process for both teams, and the Knights executed their game plan better. With a glimpse of what the Knights are about, the Petes fans are just being analytical as to what their team has to do to respond with a win. Knights fans would probably be doing similar, had the Petes won.

really....have you played the position?? When the action is hot and heavy...it's get anything on it you can...the other 5 players can worry about my misguided rebound that's why they're there

Have played the position?? Because I have and it is hard but the shots that could be caught instead of a rebound into the slot is what I see from Bowen. Albeit, I’ve never played in an OHL Championship so nerves are a contributor, but it is something coaching staff can clean up.

Dude...I coached the position as well as played it
