The Ideal First Line...
Looking back on London's last Memorial Cup team, their first line had the classic ingredients that composed their first line. There was an outstanding playmaker, a sniper who was a strong finisher, and a winger who owned the corners and boards, and was more than capable of contributing goals, as well. That line dominated to the point of being deadly.
So, given the current roster ingredients, which players currently deserve the team's first line designation, and is there a "missing ingredient" ??? As I see it, they are 2/3 of the way toward constructing an ideal first line. They have the playmaker, and a sniper, but which player will be that corner man who can dig out pucks in the offensive zone in a dominant fashion, and also have a scoring touch ?

Last season, the team's wins were based on strong defensive play, and they won plenty of games by a single goal margin. Their goal scoring should show some improvement this season, but I do feel that their primary line and first power play unit is lacking that one key player who'll elevate their linemates from good to excellent.

Training camp should provide a glimpse of who that player might be, or perhaps identify a needed element that could be addressed through an early trade.

I welcome any discussion as to who might step up from the current roster, or who might be available to complete that first line puzzle.

I agree and personally think they are missing a first line talent to play with Barkey and Cowan. Those 2 were good to start the year, but didn't become great until Winterton came and got them going. I don't see anyone on the current roster, with the talent and game style that Winterton played with.

Maybe a year older and more experience, one of Barkey and Cowan can become that driver with another line mate or maybe that piece is on the roster and Dale will bring out the best in them. I do think there are some options who could play on the first line, just have to see who gels best. For now, here are my takes as to who could slide into the first line.

Halttunen - Based on everything we have heard of him, he sounds like the most logical fit. Big body, who can score and drive the zone. But, it can take these guys some time to adapt to North America play and may need some time to figure out the smaller game.

McCue - Max really stepped up in the playoffs last year and played great. I think he has the speed and finish to play with Barkey and Cowan, but his discipline is always an issue and at times last year, he disappeared for weeks. But, if he has his head on straight, he has the potential to be the third cog with the twins.

Humphrey - He is a former 25 goal scorer on a championship team, he can play. I just don't know if he has the hockey sense to play with the twins. Like McCue he also struggles with discipline. I think he fits better as net front presence on the PP with those guys and his 5v5 ice time served as a shutdown, who can quickly turn to offense.

External - I think we will see London eventually, bring in a goal scoring top 6 player. It may not happen for a little while. But Mark will find someone who can put the puck in the net, because this team is still lacking that big time goal guy.

We will see how many NHL Draft Picks / U-19 WJC picks come out of the 2023 London Knights Draft… my money is on 4 picks and 3 WJC players 😉

Once upon a time, this experience was open to community registration, then later just for those who played in the past...then only sponsors....now only Alum and current staff / team? Why write a fluff piece to tell us they're golfing and have it closed to the community that supports the organization? I miss playing this "tourney"...would travel 600kms to play, always got an invite from the organization...made great relationships which are still fostered to this day. It was like yesterday Maata and I were at the bar at Firerock tossing shots back before heading back out for the back 9. Any clue why this has now become a private event....without anyone speculating the logic?
