They might have miscalculated the backlash, but if you fastforward to today:

- most of the fans are happy with pick
- habs are not in financial trouble
- Mailloux conducted himself as a professional the whole time.

I still see some comments to bash him on social media but a lot more come in defense to him. I’m not so sure if he’s gonna face the same treatment in the NHL or WJC.
People have for the most part moved on and have witnessed a kid work his ass off to improve on his one stupid loss of good judgment.
Too bad the 2018 Canadian Junior team hasn't been hammered as much as this kid.
He apologized, paid his debt to society.

I don't see Mailloux in less light than any other prospect.

that's actually a pretty enlightened take on it but I doubt team Canada would do that as they're under enough scrutiny as is and it would just be easier for them that they didn't. And as much as politics shouldn't interfere, I won't blame them. Even if they were proactive in trying to get in front of the potential back lash armed with the reasoning that you're suggesting, there would still be a spotlight on them that they're just not going to want. Even with the savviest PR. They'll skip on him and I completely get it.

IMHO, the “business“ side of team Canada would agree with you but isn’t their mandate to help educate these young men? The “adult” thing to do is to have an open & honest discussion….communication is so accessible now.
The fact that it’s a difficult conversation informs us……we need to talk.

Any chance he makes Team Canada? Still U19? Or with the gong show currently going on with Hockey Canada, they might pass on him for media purposes.

Legit question, haven't watched any Knights game but seem like a potential prospect we have.
do you really want him to make Team Canada?:scared:

If he is one of the very best D to help Team Canada he should be on the team. For purely political reasons this kid will never be considered
Yeah, after everything that happened with hockey Canada, having him on the team would be political suicide. And to be honest, I'd rather he not have to go through all of those distractions.

That last sentence I think should be on everyone's mind about everything right now. We need to have difficult conversations. This is the time more than ever.

I don't think that Team Canada's PR and Canadian sports media are capable of having that conversation. Or at least not having Mailloux's inclusion on the team being the catalyst to start that difficult conversation.

I do agree with you in part. And ideally or in a vacuum, I think your course of action is most likely the wisest. But in this setting I can 100% agree with Team Canada if they don't. If they include Mailloux and proactively say we want to do this with the best intentions, the media will likely twist it around and actively question the sincerity of their motives and call it 'business as usual'. And as much as I despise the media and feel Mailloux's actions were sensationalized a bit all in all, that wouldn't even be that disingenuous a stretch from the media tbh.

But I really do think you have a valid idea here in certain circumstances but I can't imagine them doing that. They'd need a PR team full of gd wizards to pull that off and be a net positive for them.

Right after we drafted him, I said this feels like the Caufield draft where a real talent fell into our lap because teams passed on him.

Some posters said this feels nothing like the Caufield pick because of what he did. I said he Committed a crime that needs to be taken seriously, but from a hockey stand point, it feels like the Caufield pick.

I'm glad we drafted him. He can also serve as an example, a teaching moment, for youth to take social media seriously regarding privacy and sexual matters. While his crime was serious, it doesn't have to define him going forward. People make mistakes, especially in their youth.
Good post bud

yeah they were prepared but ill-prepared.

It was a gutsy gutsy move. It could be huge for us going forward. You gotta admire the cajones.
But it was strange when people didn't even think it was a good sheer hockey pick. OBVIOUSLY they saw something in him.
No way in hell they'd do that for a bum. And as we can see now the kid's upside is massive.

Agreed, they had to bet on the kid’s personality in an extreme situation in Montreal to top it off. Ballsy move allright.

Going down on one knee and laying his stick in the passing lane even 5 on 5 is not gonna be a good way to defend. He needs to learn to take away sticks around his net, he's gonna get saucer passed to death.
Noticed that from his games last year. He will need to correct that habit. We don’t want him to be Hal Gill.

Sky is the limit with him. Said it before but it’s like we drafted Jiricek as well as Slafkovsky. Mailloux is a similar prospect to Jiricek, true 1D potential. He and Guhle are going to be a top pairing other teams envy.
I like Jiricek but Mailloux is a better skater and Mailloux’s offensive game ( passing, shooting and vision) has a higher dynamic upside.

He probably got away with it all his life in lower levels. Hopefully he gets coached properly.

The kid has barely 20 games of OHL hockey under the belt. let the coaches work wit him another 50-60 games or more !

He was PPG too in January before his injury. After he had a fight, he never was the same and was sidelined soon after
Never the same of course. His shoulder was injured badly !

Can't wait for this guy to make the team next season. Badly needs a young RHD
No rush, please !

Exactly. People are overhyping him a bit too much right now. He needs seasoning so to speak. He has a long road before being a regular in the NHL. Even he has an outstanding season this year, he should start in the AHL next season. Let him grow more (I mean his play)

Never was the same?

Actually, I was wrong. He had 9 points in his first 7 games. I believe he had a small injury but was finally sidelined after that fight. I thought his fight came in sooner but anyway. I wasn't watching him play, I was only reading reports by people here. I'm just saying that he came out in a big way when he started playing but slowly faded away
