Mailloux was sent down because there is no room at the moment, simple as that. He is ready for the NHL. Huston is a wonderful defensive play maker, but will for the rest of his career be a defensive liability as a defenseman, need to matched with excellent defensive defenseman. The Canadians do not have that yet or in there system. Matheson and Savard need to go , Guhle is solid and is locked up. As for the rest 2 years of NHL time to see who is NHL capable.

He has the offensive skill/talent but defensively this is Marc Andre Bergeron level. I feel like one day they missed a dman in his pee-wee day and he played that position and they forgot about him since

He looks brutal right now. Reminds me a lot like Bouchard. Great tools especially the shot, but questionable IQ. Bouch improved alot over the years playing with ekholm. Mailloux has just as high a ceiling I think
IQ is the only thing that seperates Nhlers from Ahlers nowadays.. all are excellent skaters and players.. so what is the difference? It's the ability to process the game at high speed - that is all..
Let's take a look at Mailloux.. hes a 1st rounder who made a BONE HEADED decision in his junior years. While I never really thought it was that big a deal (shoot me), the reality is the whole ordeal was so stupid it really make you question his IQ..
The game itself has evolved beyond Athleticism.. truly. 30 years ago a dim-whitted loser with speed could circumvent the IQ flaws.. no longer..
So now the question becomes, is this a player we are going to invest millions for the CH to improve and ultimately chase a Stanley Cup Run? If he lacks IQ (a la Deangelo) then we have to trade him asap..
I trust Hugo knows this, so I will wait with bated breath.

Mailloux was not expected to be a mainstay in the NHL right now.
He did show some things offensively and showed his weaknesses defensively, which is something everyone was already aware off.
His defensive game has evolved in the last year, so we can be optimistic it`s going to progress further. At this time last year, he was one of the worst D defensively in the AHL.

Last year it took him about 10 games to switch speeds from juniors to AHL.
It will take a lot longer to go from AHL to NHL. At least half a season with a vet.
See any available vets? He's played mostly with players who are also developing. Pair him with a Markov equivilant and then let's see what he becomes.
I thought it wasn't a bad idea to have all these youngsters develop together through sheer competition. I was wrong. It takes great coaching and a vet to teach the finer points. Both which we are missing.
He can and should develop in the AHL for now. Reevaluate closer to TDL if he's ready or we take some placeholder cap dump when/if we trade Savard.

One of the two of his biggest problems can develop in the AHL. His constant butt-on-ice visits. He needs to develop his balance because he loses a lot of the one-on-one.
His defensive decision making and positioning would be far better off with a vet defensive partner. We have none to give him in the AHL or the NHL
As for trading Savard. If you asked me in August, I was thrilled, ask me now and I'm not trading him for anything. We are woefully on quality defensive play and we would be worse off without Savard.
Maybe everything changes IF...IF we get a top notch defensive coach teaching the young ones the finer points of defensive play.

It's for the best. He had some alright moments contributing offensively, but needs a lot of work to become an NHL calibre d-man.

He can barely hold his own at RD and that's his natural side. LD is out of the question and doesn't fit Montreal.
This next comment isn't meant for you, but it's funny how so many people were saying he's more NHL ready and likely to be better than Hutson. Hutson is growing much faster and already far better defensively of the two, let alone offensively.

Two things can be true at the same time.
He was my top prospect behind Demidov at the start of the season. So I believe in him.
But he was admittedly trash.
I don't think he is as bad as he was during his call up.
For him it's about consistency. On some nights, in the AHL, he would be the best D on the ice -- On some others, one of the worst.
He's like Petry, but in the AHL.
He must find consistency in the lower ranks before making the NHL.
And I maintain he was trash during this call up.

Agreed, he was really bad and needs another year in the AHL at the minimum imo. He has a lot to learn about positioning and reading the ice.
I easily had Reinbacher ahead of him before the season as he is just so much smarter and at a younger age.
His most obvious weakness has always been hockey IQ or at least he appears to have low hockey IQ. Low confidence and nerves can often mask themselves as low IQ so there is no reason to panic but IQ is the single most important trait by an order of magnitude for a hockey player and there has always been concern that he just may not have it.
Hopefully something clicks at some point but we have plenty of time to let him develop as he is very young and has missed significant development time.
Mailloux has a flaw that is the hardest to improve: the IQ or defensive awareness. His offensive instinct is quite good.
Habs have some good offensive D: Hutson, Mailloux and Barron.
