I don't think he's underrated at all. He has all the tools, just needs to play more hockey. I think management will do the right thing and groom him properly.

Depends on who you ask. I feel the general consensus is he is on the underrated side. Where did we rank him in our prospect rankings?

It seems like we are trying to rush this guy , I don't know why everybody around the org is saying he's the most likely to make it out of camp all summer

I'm just saying even if he is ready why not just let him simmer. Probably just the PTSD talking but I don't see the rush he's so young

I hope we (fans/media) are not combined with MSL/Hughes/Gorton. I feel we rushed Slaf last year and you would have to imagine that Hughes/Gorton have noticed it?

Just watched some young prospects getting interviewed on Habs TV. (YouTube). Farrell, Reinbacher, Beck and Mailloux. Mailloux's interview is a must watch. The kid is impressive.
Just watched it. I like that he really wants to be a defensive guy. Counted on in the dying minutes etc. I doubt he’ll displace Guhle and Reinbacher who likely are the ones counted on in those situations but admire the ambition.

It’s still early but MB was all but crucified for that pick and it could turn out to be a really gutsy coup.

Starting in 2019 it seems that Bergevin and his minions started getting a clue. Only took 7+ years

Caufield was a bit of a gimme but him, Guhle and Mailloux have enormous upside.

CC and Guhle I feel very confident in being franchise cornerstones. Always loved Mailloux’s upside but was skeptical of his flaws. I’m feeling better and better about his chances all the time. If he hits our D is gonna be an absolute force

If his D wasn’t so question mark-y he would’ve been more in the mix of our top prospect poll. Hutson’s totals are just too enormous.

Mailloux’s offensive toolbox with his size and skating is pretty tremendous. Even as his D improved it still looked…awkward at times. Like Hal Gill on a 5 on 3 kill. lol.

The raw talent is exciting though

He has the tools, but his toolbox is questionable. He could be really good or he could end up like Beaulieu or Belle. His skills are good, but will he use them effectively?

I don’t know if I’d say there’s a toolbox question mark there. I really think it’s specifically a D issue but the 2 can kind of bleed into each other.

I feel much better about him than NB. NB was on a stacked team where Mailloux was pretty much THE guy.

Some of the scouting reports rated Mailloux's partner better than Mailloux. A lot of the criticism was about decision making and a lack of deception, that is he would telegraph what he was going to do and it would be OK in junior because he is bigger and faster than most other players but not in the NHL where lots of guys will be as big and as fast.

Great tools, we'll see how they translate. Can he use his teammates? Roy, in particular, plays better with better players around him, he uses his teammates. Will Mailloux be able to do so or will he try individual plays that won't work as well at higher levels? Some are hoping it goes the other way for Mesar...

What we going to do if Mailloux has great camp. Could he make jump? First day impression was outstanding.

I know he missed a lot of hockey.

But he was a top 15 talent in his draft. Maybe even higher.

It's not out of the realm of possibilities that he's very close to being an NHLer.

If he's good, he's good.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing him tear it up in the AHL for a year though.

Agreed, at this point we've got 3-4 guys that are fairly locked into a D spot and then another group of 5-6 who are all competing for the rest. If Mailloux shows up and is one of our 6 best D then he should make the team. Obviously AHL time would be good for him and I think that's the likely scenario, but outside of 18 year olds, if a guy shows up to camp and makes the team then he should be on the team IMO. It's not like he can only develop his defense in the AHL and not the NHL.

Hot takes already.

Man I'm going to be disappointed if our top prospects don't look good in rookie scrimmages and or the prospect games.
Guys like Ramage saying "you have to stick out" from the outset can't be lost on the players. Rookie Camp flies by quickly.
Plenty of time for a more meaningful evaluation for those who can stick in the Big Camp.

Reinbacker sounds like a guy who doesn't understand why the journalists keep asking him about his weight. "Yes, i've been gorging myself all summer, why?". No judging, he knows better than I what he needs to do.

Mailloux has a lot of confidence and swagger, and that's good, but swagger doesn't wins hockey games, and in the end I trust more some other posters around here assessments of his play last year than Mailloux enthusiasm to make the team.

This kid is a legit offensive threat….all the time. It’s in his hockey IQ his player profile DNA. When you watch him play he’s always looking up ice.
Add to that his shot and he skates well for a big boy, plus, that will smooth out as he gains that man strength. He just reminds me of a prototypical 60pt d-man. Luckily we have lots of time. Unfortunately we don’t have a celebrated player development department.

His D is just so patchy though. Offensively he could probably produce at a decent clip immediately but he likely gets burned pretty bad in his own end quite a bit if he stays up. It might even look pretty ugly in Laval to start at least.

I just don’t see him starting with the Habs. No reason to expose those RD placeholders to waivers right off the hop. They’re good depth and give the kids time to develop. Logan could look good off the hop but then nose dive and then you likely lost a Kovy or Lindstrom to waivers and you’re forced to rush a kid or 2
