Logan Cooley is on pace for 75 points

It's not all that common to see players with exceptional motors, and well above average hockey sense. I expected that he'd be a high hockey sense, two way skilled forward. His relentlessness at this age surprises me. He's a great player. (PS I thought Cooley > Slafkovsky at the draft, and make that >> now.)

I’m curious how Slafkovsky’s contract affects Cooley’s. If I’m Cooley I’m likely pointing to it and saying that I deserve more. Slafkovsky’s contract ruins things I’d say.

Cooley's having a terrific season, however he's a very different style of player than Slafkovsky. Anyone who thinks the verdict is in now that both players are 20 should review NHL history. It'll take another three/four years before we have an informed opinion on which player's career is better.
While I agree

I'd still take the ppg center before I take the ppg winger (if Slaf even gets there)

Now if he played a power forward game then I'd see a case being made but so far he doesn't

Kind of like those proclaiming Hutson should have been the 1st overall pick?

Still annoyed the Coyotes franchise chose not to pick him multiple times in the 2nd round.

Slafkovsky came alive in the second half of last season, becoming a hybrid power-forward/playmaker who was producing at a 70-75 pt. pace. He didn't look like the same player for the first half of this season, but he's recently looked much stronger (his goal last night was pure power-forward).

He and Cooley have physical skills the other doesn't have, but it's too soon to know when and how high they'll establish themselves. Generally, however, I agree a C is taken before a winger.

It's cool that a late 2nd round pick has a legit argument for 1OA, but despite Hutson's rare breakout season, it's too soon for a victory lap. These kids are still so young!

They'll probably keep them split for some balance, but I have a morbid curiosity to see what a line of Keller-Cooley-Guenther could do going forward. I think it could be one of the most lethal lines in the league.

Should have went first overall. He's already scored more goals this year than Slafkovsky is on pace to score in 82 games.

Slafkovsky secured that 7.6M x 8 contract extension though.
The entire Habs board came after me with pitch forks when I said they should have taken Cooley instead

It was tried and Schmaltz fell off a cliff so the team result was better split. Schmaltz and Keller have such insane chemistry

My fellow Habs fans are delusional with Slaf. Not sure how after 3 decades of mediocre centres they don’t take Cooley
Where do we put this Cooley? Do we trade him for Suzuki? We have nothing else like Slafkovsky. We’re not giving Slaf. What Cooley would bring is what we already have in Suzuki or even Demidov (who’s played much of his minor league at center) and if we want a play driver / playmaker we have Hutson that was also drafted in 2022 but has 7 more assists than Cooley this season. He’s completely redundant. Pass.

Trade? Who’s talking about a trade. Habs should’ve taken Cooley in 2022 ahead of Slaf. Slot him right behind Suzuki for now. But yes, sure Slaf is better when Cooley is about to match Slaf’s career in points in a single season. Also, Demidov is likely going to be great, but he hasn’t played a single professional game on North American ice yet. May want to pump the break there

No we should have drafted Hutson at 1OA. And Coyotes should have done the same at 3OA. Hutson is close to pacing Cooley except it’s his rookie season playing as a D.

Or and hear me out on this, Habs should’ve taken both Cooley and Hutson. Pretty crazy I know, a #1 C and a #1 D is a little foreign to the modern Habs fan but it might just work

The trouble is it’s a moot debate. In 2022 I was very happy with Slaf, in 2023 I was pissed and I believed we made a big mistake that we passed on Michkov. In both cases, it’s an academic debate because both Cooley (who’s never been my cup of tea) and Michkov are redundant with the addition of Laine and Demidov.

That’s great, but they aren’t the same type of player.

Montreal fans were cool calling it early…
So it’s not early now? Are we going to act like Slafkovsky isn’t useful and on the Habs top line?
