Rielly is not Schenn. If a player is ready to be in the NHL, then they should be in the NHL. You don't play them in an inferior league just because.

As to squeaking into the playoffs.. What position did the Cup champs get in as?

The goal is to win, not target #1 picks a la Edmonton

No, the target is to win Lord Stanley, not to build a team to squeak into playoff contention.

Everyone knew the Kings were an underachieving team yet still had all the pieces to win a Cup.

Leafs wouldn't be considered anywhere near that if they finished 8th this season.

Apples and oranges.

Didn't Burke also say he didn't want to sneak into 8th just to get bounced?

I think if I was going to trade for Luongo, i'd need to know that the team who signed the long term deal is stuck with the cap hit after and such, if so then i'd probably give up:

Bozak (nice little 2nd line replacement for Kesler while he recovers), Franson, and probably 3rd rounder, if I had to go up to a 2nd, I would consider it but I don't want to give up the farm.

I'd also need to get Lambo and Komisarek bought out or shipped out.

bozak reimer and a 2nd?

Even though Kings were seeded 8th, you don't have to be Bobby Mac to see the difference in rosters of the Leafs and Kings, night and day.

Leafs can pick 6 million in cap hit, and can afford financially to do so, without moving out any salary.

However, the next season have to fit in a raise for Lupul, while losing Lombardi and Connolly with a $64 cap.

Komi only makes 3.5 salary, with his 4.5 cap hit so might be of some interest to another team.

Now if players are sent away in the Luongo deal, some cap will be exchanged there.

Kesler is, apparently, going to be out for some length of time. Could Connolly be part of the Luongo deal, as he'll be off the books end of season, but could be the short term replacement for Kesler. I expect the Canucks to get a couple prospects in the deal, but value really depends on who is on hook for retirement years.

all 14 teams missing the playoffs will be in a seeded lottery for the draft (sportsnet

Which is fine, but teams that finish lower have a better %, didn't like the odds before with the bottom 5, thought it was unfairly weighted. Considering mere points are often the separation from 2-7

We need to get Kessel under extension in the off-season too, I don't want to wait until the 11th hour.

There was never any doubt they would come back.

Any word on when roster moves can begin?

Komi is going to be bought out. Especially with Ranger/Franson/Kostka/Holzer trying to find a way in

Probably one week after the CBA is actually ratified; although IIRC for the NBA what they did was even though moves could only happen a week later, teams were allowed to communicate with players beforehand
