The league wanted to salvage 82 games. They would have easily given halfway then, but whether they would have or not is moot because Beatlejuice never even tried to get to it.

That was my main problem with Fehr, not even an attempt to negotiate other aspects of the deal OFF the 50-50 in October. We'll never know if the deal would have at least gotten close enough to what got accepted now because there was no real attempt to negotiate until December, and even that was with an asterisk cause it was obviously an offer the NHL wasn't going to accept. The gameplan was to stall right up until the end.

Now obviously every game is important, but with a full 82 game season, the first few months are usually the getting your feet wet stages with a team and once the new year hits, teams begin to gather the pieces, cut the fat, and start to turn up the gears

Keep in mind we do not have those few months so each game is even more important and there is not too much room for error if we want to make the playoffs

My friend hates shortened seasons and was telling me how exciting it would be to see the Islanders play Colorado for the cup since you can go on a long hot streak and make the playoffs.

We shouldn't need a few games to get going this year though, the coach isn't new this year.

Exactly and it netted him a deal that was pretty much the middleground while losing 500M for his players.

You seem pretty set on your theories despite what actually came out so I dunno if I should bother trying to convince you if you're determined the NHL were so bad and tried to cheat them the whole time.

You have no doubt that it would be below 50/50? You might want to read up on Proskauer if that is the case. I'm too tired to teach right now.

I've just seen the way the NHL works. They want to get the best deal possible, had they seen the players get desperate they would've tried to get as much out of them as they can (see the salary cap in 2005 AND salary rollbacks). The PA essentially used their same strategy against them, waiting for them to get desperate and then taking everything they can get from them.

You don't think that the NHL would've tried to get the PA to go lower than 50% had the PA actually sat down in the beginning? When it comes down to it, both sides made absolutely no attempt to negotiate in the beginning of the lockout. Let's be honest, did the NHL really think a drop from 57% HRR to 43% HRR was going to be looked upon favorably by the players? It was a slap in the face if I ever saw one, and then the players went right back ahead with the same idea and offered some bogus proposal.

Neither side was right, but the PA absolutely knew the NHL would get desperate, and took advantage of that, even if half the season was lost.

Since the timetable was 3-4 weeks a few days ago, odds are he'll miss the first two weeks of the season (maybe six games?).

There might be like 4 games a week at times. We have what the middle of January to the end of April. That's only 3 1/2 months to fit in 50 or 48 games....

What are you even talking about? Did you follow the lockout?

Bettman and Daly openly stated to the media that their first offer was the flip of the current deal. Guess where the middle moves you to if you negotiate? Where did Proskauer have precedent going? Where did they hint at going to?

And you're missing the point still. We don't know for sure what would have happened then. You are theorizing. Fehr stalled and stalled and never negotiated. Had he negotiated and the owners said 48/52 then you may be correct but Beatlejuice never did. He just offered deals on napkins giving the players 56% That is the issue and it didn't give him a better deal. That's the problem with Beatlejuice and to think he did great work negotiating is naive beyond belief.

Tell your friend that only two of the playoff teams from '93-94 didn't make it in '95, and that only one or two playoff teams changed from the 48-game mark last year till the end of the season.

Our coach isn't new, but our staff/captain is. And we'll have to do some things up front with the forwards.

True but historically, personnel changes usually lead to the worst openings for seasons. Wonder why that isn't the case midseason. Is it cause the coach isn't fully implementing a new system til the offseason?

My god, our forward depth is disgusting.

Right, we'll never know if he could have gotten a similar offer sooner, just like we won't know what happened if the NHL had offered a 'fairer' deal from the start.

I don't trust the NHL but I don't trust the NHLPA either. If the NHL HAD given a fair offer, the NHLPA would have still held out extracting more. The NHLPA wasn't interested in fairness when they were getting 70+% of HRR and teams were dying on the vine so I don't want to hear how they only wanted a 'fair' deal now.

Which creates a chicken and egg situation almost. If the NHL offered the current deal to the players in October, would they accept or just offer another napkin offer looking for more? Or was this deal a result of Beatlejuice no longer perceiving an advantage is stalling.

I mean c'mon it took 5 days to cast a damn vote.

Nice news to wake up to, though I'm less excited and more relieved that they finally got a deal worked out and didn't drag out this mess any further.

At any rate though, Let's go Devils!!!!

Over and Phoenix.

It will be near impossible for teams to sell tickets the first couple weeks, given the quick turnaround between the schedule coming out and the start of the season. I wonder how ticket sales were in '95 when it started?
