Still some intriguing Free Agents. Dominic Moore would be nice center depth with Henrique out. Huselius signed in Sweden not sure if he has an NHL out-claue, but he would be an interesting option.

I'd welcome Andrei Kostitsyn with open arms on a one or two year deal. I know he signed a deal in Russia but I'm not certain if he can bolt if a NHL team throws a offer his way.

Only problem with signing another center is what happens when they are all healthy. Unless Moore goes to fourth line duty, which is totally plausible. We would be Moore's 10th NHL team, and he's only 32. This actually might happen if Carter or more specifically Gionta don't look adequate. Moore could be a valuable PKer too. Without Henrique, we could see something like:

Kovalchuk-Zajac-Zubrus
Elias-Josefson-Butler
Tedenby-Moore-Clarkson
Carter-Gionta-Bernier

When Henrique comes back just push the centers down the lineup.

Sykora didn't sign overseas because he wasn't under an NHL contract. If he was, he could sign a deal that ended when the lockout and he could come back to NA, but since he didn't, he'd be restricted to stay the whole year.

I know everyone hates Fehr but you have to say his waiting game was pretty smart.

For the second year cap, he managed to get the NHL to go from 60 to 64.3, for the contracts, he managed to get the NHL go from max of 5 years and a 7 for returning players, to 7 and 8, respectively. And even contract variance from 5% all the way up to 35%. So much for it being the hill they die on.

He did what he was supposed to do, in getting the best deal for the players.

That is absolutely false. He lost his players 500M worth of salaries through this ordeal. Variance and contract limits were easily negotiable if he didn't put a poison pill into every proposal from August to November.

Anyone who thinks he did smart negotiating didn't pay attention.

.@GaryLawless confirms that in a 48 game schedule the Jets would host the New Jersey Devils at 1pm on Jan 19.

Chances are the Devils will start on the road whether they play 50 or 48 games with Disney on Ice at Pru Center, beginning Jan. 17

The 500M in salaries is insignificant when you think about what it will cost them in 10 years (or 8 with the mutual opt-out). If they succumbed to the NHL's original proposals, they would've lost WAY more money in the future.

Anyone who thinks negotiating is only about what's best for 'this' year has a pretty narrow view of what actual negotiating for an 8-10 year deal really means. Not to mention other things that weren't financial being improved over the October offer.

I'm just glad Fehr didn't want to nuke the season and go after the cap after all.

You're not following: if he negotiated earlier, then they get less make whole and keep their full salaries. No one is saying they should capitulate in October; they should have done what they did this past week instead.

Every issue they decided on was essentially predicted to be that way by everyone following. It is just the middle ground. The only thing that needed development was pension.

500M in lost salaries is insignificant? Not sure how you want a response to come to that.

Not at all. If he negotiated earlier, the NHL wouldn't have compromised nearly as much as they did now. The NHL got very desperate for a season and kept compromising, THAT's why they got to the middle ground. The NHL was waiting for the NHLPA to start succumbing to their proposals, and the NHLPA never did it forcing the NHL to move on their issues.

Yes, the salary loss is insignificant especially if they would've lost some of the HRR that was originally proposed, etc. Had they been willing to sit down when the NHL offered 43%, there's no doubt in my mind the number would have been lower than 50%. The NHL would've took it as a sign of desperation from the players and would've force them to move their offers close to the NHL's instead, the PA waited and forced the NHL to do just that.

I'm still in love with the idea of getting Chris Stewart out of St. Louis.

It'll cost too much, we don't have that many valuable pieces either. I could see us potentially swapping Zidlicky for someone like that at the deadline, but that's about it.

If Stewart is struggling in STL, I'd definitely love to see us do a swap with Zidlicky. Gives St. Louis a valuable defender for a guy that isn't cutting it there, we get a chance at a guy with a bright future. I have a feeling Stewart goes to PHI the first chance he gets though, him and Simmonds are great friends.

You seem pretty set on your theories despite what actually came out so I dunno if I should bother trying to convince you if you're determined the NHL were so bad and tried to cheat them the whole time.

The league wanted to salvage 82 games. They would have easily given halfway then, but whether they would have or not is moot because Beatlejuice never even tried to get to it.

You have no doubt that it would be below 50/50? You might want to read up on Proskauer if that is the case. I'm too tired to teach right now.

I'm still hoping for a Tallinder for any respectable forward trade. Need to make room for Larsson in the top 6 and we need forwards.
