I can’t believe they did themselves like this. If we had more young players that are waiver elegible we could have a legit rotation and in-season competition going.

1. they brought in too many vet players
2. they needed to waive at least one of them to create one spot

We all saw this happening .. trying to guess at the lineup .. and pretty soon there were no spots and no one had White out of the lineup.
I never understood it while it was happening and I understand it less now that I've seen what exactly is blocking some of our players

Time to let the kids play. Insulate them with w couple of veterans but if we are going to lose games, I would rather be entertained at the same time. Sending Logan Brown and Erik Brannstrom down to the AHL that is not even running right now is very odd. Dorion needs to figure his business out soon and make some move to clear the dead weight.

Tkachuk- Norris - Batherson
Paul- L. Brown- Dadonov
Stützle- Tierney- C. Brown
Galchenyuk- White- Watson

Chabot-Zaitsev
Brannstrom-Gudbranson
Wolanin- Brown

The contrast of how the Norris line did against Pionk/Forbot compared to Morrissey/xxx in this series was pretty drastic. That's Pionk/Forbot that gave them a pretty tough time, especially tonight.

They also feasted on Brodie/Rielly but didn't fare so good against Muzzin/Holl.

Hopefully Stützle is ready to go for next game. Him and Galchenyuk should be back in the lineup. Coburn should also get back in as we need a left shot d that is capable of playing defense on the 2nd or 3rd pair. Only one of Wolanin or Reilly should be in at this point. Neither is strong defensively and both are puck movers that seem more like powerplay specialists than anything else. Stepan should get scratched for losing the Sens the game with that terrible penalty. Paquette apparently got injured in the game so he will either be out or if he is healthy than him or Anisimov should sit. Lines for next game should be:

Tkachuk-Norris-Batherson
Stützle-Paul-Dadanov
White-Tierney-C.Brown
Galchenyuk-Paquette/Anisimov-Watson

Chabot-Zaitsev
Reilly-Gubranson
Coburn-J.Brown

I did not know transactions with taxi squad player required waivers. So now all the choices they made are extra mind boggling. It’s just insane.

Okay tell me what is wrong with this lineup?

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Paul - Stutzle - Dadonov (you can switch Paul with Stutzle)
Galchenyuk - Tierney - C.Brown (at least have some scoring threat on the 3rd line, since Brown's lack of finish is alarming)
White - Stephan - Watson (this could be a good 4th line)

Chlapik should be in for Stepan
Otherwise good :)

I’d like to see Chaplik come in for Paquette who I assume goes to IR.

Seems like he won’t need to clear if he plays on the road trip.

“A player does not need to pass through waivers if the player has not been on the NHL active roster for a cumulative 30 days since last clearing waivers, and has not played in 10 or more NHL games. CBA “

Which was another one of my concerns with how the roster has been managed/built. There's so many I am actually struggling to keep track.

2. they needed to waive at least one of them to create one spot

They didn't know they would be many guys on waivers at the end of training camp? Or that you can sign another Matthew Peca or Logan Shaw. Heck, they just acquired Clark Bishop for Lajoie... That's another taxi squad candidate.

Why acquire that quantity of vets when you're already stuck with Anisimov? Why compromise yourself that much?

I want Formenton-L Brown-Abramov

Get those old f***s outta there.

No need to insult them, it's not their fault. They have been hired and are making money doing their job. Just that for a rebuilding team, there's no point in having too many of them

Ex : a guy like paquette will be extra motivated to be a 4th line player on Tampa, "naturally sheltered" by several great players. I can understand him being really down right now coming to Ottawa for a 56 games pandemic season and absolutely no point outside of waiting for his contract to expire. However, he should think about his next contract but IMO, he probably goes back to Tampa on minimum NHL salary next year.

I'd say that's a hot take.

Abramov is smaller but plays a smarter and more complete game. For now at least.
I am not so sure about that. Troy Mann had an interview before training camp started and he commented on Abramov. He said he still needs a lot of work on his defensive game and he was skeptical that Abramov would be a 30+ goal scorer at the NHL level.

At this point Sokolov looks like he has the upside to be a 30+ goal scorer, he is faster now that he has gotten in better shape, he is a power winger and it sounded like he was solid defensively in training camp. I see him as more of a core prospect and it sounded like he impressed coaching staff and management in camp. Abramov missed most of camp with some kind of injury and didn't take part in any of the listed exhibition scrimmages. So it is possible that Sokolov is looking more NHL ready than Abramov.

Paquette is supposed to be a defensive forward .. is this a correct understanding? Why is it Paquette has 67% Ozone starts? If he is a defense 1st forward would we not see him have more defensive zone starts 14 hits 2 takeaways 0 giveaways

Austin Watson .. has not had as much as 30% Ozone starts in each of the last 4 years. He's been a defensive forward. Here he's had 76.6% Ozone starts over 5 games.
14 hits 1 take away 5 giveaways

Anisimov 3gp 75% ozone starts 2 hits 1 takeaway 3 giveaways

White 2gp 50% ozone starts 4 hits 0 takeaway 1 giveaway

Odd that White is the only one in this fine group that has any where near 50% Dzone starts

Just speculating - but I recall Toronto putting their 1-2 lines on the ice in their own end in Ottawa knowing that DJ would match the OZ start with a checking line.

Maybe that’s why his OZ starts are high? I’d rather see DJ dictate play with the Norris line but it’s a big ask early in the season. Those kids got a taste of that last night.

Put Zub in for Brown
Put Stutzle in for Haley
Put White in for Paquette

Simple
Hard to scratch any of the d men not named coburn (which Smiths hand was already forced on). If you mean just to get zub reps then I agree. Josh brown has settled after the first three games.

No thanks - you don’t screw with the development of the closest thing you have to a successful 1C and 1RW 5 games in.
