Funny you include Scheifele and Kadri since those 2 barely played any NHL games in their firsts 2 seasons after being drafted.

Only thing I can see is I don’t see the potential in Lias to get to where those players are, but yes he’s still really young. I also can be wrong, tends to happen regularly.

Lias outperformed Kostin, Tolvanen and Kostin this season who are considered great prospects. Fans tend to focus on the negatives with their own prospects, and on the positives with other team's prospects.

This is true, but I’m assuming everyone was hoping for a Keller type talent at 7OA. Lias just doesn’t show any particular offensive skill to get you excited, I think that’s why everyone is very Meh on him. He is smart and plays well in the corners and net front, but I figure everyone was hoping for a dynamic talent.

Swap Chytil and Andersson’s draft positions and I think everyone is much happier with the draft.

Also we were really close to Pettersson so that makes it a bit sad too.

2017 was a weak draft and really not top-heavy. That has to be taken into consideration as well. Look at the 3-4 players picked after Lias. it was not a bad pick

And no, I am not convinced Mittelstadt is better than Lias

Neither am I, I think Mittlestadt is highly overrated. Hopefully Lias becomes a really solid middle 6 center.

Expecting Clayton Keller just shows me people don't know how to evaluate the draft.

The only player I would take over Lias Andersson at 7 on draft day is Erik Brannstrom and that would have been a very unpopular pick at the time. More so than Lias

I wanted Mittlestadt but I’m glad we didn’t take him. I like Lias I just hope he gets a little more agility and explosiveness in his skating. If he can do that he will find a little more room out there to get his shot off, he has a fantastic shot.

They never had to trade for that pick. Obviously the front office liked what they saw. So they don't get to use the old "it was a week draft class" like everyone else.

"We wanted to move up/draft someone better" is a pretty bad excuse.

They did not trade Derek Stepan just so they could pick someone in the draft. There's more to it than that. They wanted to trade Stepan because they wanted to retool/go with a younger team.

The trade and whoever we draft should be judged separate

With the emergence of Tony D'Angelo, we should all just calm down about Lias. Let him develop at whatever pace he needs. If D'Angelo becomes a 50-60 pt RD the trade is at the very least a break-even. But likely a win as he's now a building block for the rebuild. If Lias becomes a 3rd line center who plays in all situations, agitates and scores 35-40 pts a year, the trade is lopsided in our favor. Anything above that, the trade is unquestionably great. Let's give it time.

We've already won the trade and it wasn't meant to be successful this fast.

Have you seen Stepan? He was a 50pt player with PP1 time. Now, he's a 30-40pt player @ $6.5M.

To get Lias Andersson and Tony D for that is highway robbery.

To be fair, we also gave up Raanta. Who's been injured all season
