You missed the point. What he was saying was that the Rangers picked Andersson based on character and leadership...even if you like him as a player, which I clearly don't, that's kinda concerning. He's right about that. Andersson could be the most gifted player in hockey...after what he did it's worrying to know why they picked him. There are methods to find out about such issues in the interviews. Given the fact that this wasn't the first incident after the draft there were probably more incidents before the draft the Rangers should have known about. Things like that don't tend to come out of the blue.

no i didn't miss the point at all...the point was to imply that they took him for those things ignoring that he couldn't play. stating that you like his character doesn't mean you ignored everything else.

You're still missing the point. His post isn't about the player being a bad pick...it's about the organization praising his character and leadership. Today teams are capabable of finding out about issues in those areas and the Rangers clearly didn't.

C'mon though, just about everyone was talking about Andersson having those attributes in spades --- his former coaches, teammates, etc.

That's what makes his behavior all the more disappointing and frustrating. It's not as if he was going around acting the fool and the Rangers chose to look the other way.

It's like hiring someone for a position after they come with glowing recommendations, and the decision just completely goes off the rails. At some point you can spend hours, days, even weeks doing your due diligence and homework, and things still go sideways.

And the Rangers did do that due diligence. For a long time. Sometimes, oopses happen.

Consensus opinion: Lias made mistakes but hopefully this move to the SHL is the first step towards him rebuilding his value and possibly becoming an NHL player for the Rangers.

Jk, terminate his contract!!!!!!

His value is low. Who wants a quitter on their team?
You dont know what his value is right now. It isnt high, but it may not be low in the eyes of other GMs. Bottom line is, even if it is low, he is going to be playing and it could only go up. Worst that happens is he continues to fail and the Rangers are right where they are now, which is with a diminished asset. They havent gotten to that point yet. No reason to terminate his contract. They have all the leverage to wait him out, which should motivate Lias to play well so the Rangers get a suitable return for him and both parties can move on.

His value is low, but it's not non-existent. And it's not impossible to rehab his value to a degree.

But instead you want to just walk away completely? That would be a waste.

Anyway, I don't know why I engaged, as this was the discussion a month ago. He's not in breach of his contract now so IDK.

Without walking in his shoes I have no idea what he is going though. Any steps, even if misshapen, towards rebuilding his value should be explored. At this point the best we can hope for is that whatever is ailing him heels. There may still be some value there even if he is not the next Toews.

(I assume none of my pun are helping, and really I root for the kid and the Rangers to figure it out)

Yes, instead of letting a kid possibly repair his value, hey lets cut him and forsake any chance on building that value back.

I don't like what Lias did one bit, it was a temper tantrum and completely childish, but even so, unceremoniously cutting him and not trying to repair things is just about the most asinine thing the Rangers could possibly do. If they only get a 4th or a 5th or add him into another deal it's inherently better than "hurr durr cut him". If the latter is the response of management, I would rather the Rangers hire a sock puppet to be the GM.

Let him bake in the SHL and maybe come back the AHL. It can't hurt at all. I am glad the Rangers handled this properly, certainly more mature than Lias. They suspended him and kept the lines of communication open.

This thread has some pretty dumb asset management suggestions. By pretty dumb, I mean patently stupid.

I don't think he's ever going to be a Ranger again.

Yea but he started it

Anyway, it makes sense for everyone that he's playing hockey again. That's a good start.

As for my personal opinion, after all the speculation and innuendo, I still think the most likely scenario is the coaching staff with the big club and Hartford informed Andersson that they don't think he's a top 6 player and he better start augmenting his game to be more successful in the bottom 6, leading to a tantrum. And here we are.

Accidentally read Ghandi as Girardi
