Now, hold on a second, y'all. There was a legitimate gripe last game, but let's not pretend Howden didn't play very well tonight. You can definitely argue Lias should've received more TOI over Fast and Lemieux – who are obviously both wings – but other than that, I thought everyone else deserved exactly the time they received this evening.

Remember when Quinn said he wasn't going to bury prospects on the 4th line because "They need to play significant minutes to develop"?

Good times.

Imagine going from smith as your rw to Kakko ? That’s a logical flip w Strome

As long as Andersson is good at faceoffs it makes sense to flip him back when w Strome

Good post. While it's a bit frustrating to see him stuck with the least amount of TOI by far, Andersson just has to keep showing up and putting forth effort. When someone starts to fade or not contribute, Andersson should get his chance.

Key word "Should". Will he? With Quinn I'm honestly not sure.

I mean, Howden got caved in possession and xG tonight, per Corsica. Again.

It's a no brainer to swap Strome with Lias at least for a trial. Strome is doing nothing out there and IMO Lias is flying. He's really playing with pace and looks good out there. All of his hard work over the summer definitely is paying off and he's getting more comfortable with the speed of the NHL game. He's playing fast, skating well and starting to flash some skill as well.

Lias "fancy stats" in all situations (5v5 and PK), per Corsica:

57.14% CorsiFor% (+9.32% rel)
85.71% FenwickFor% (+40.14% rel, first on the team by a mile)
80% ShotsFor% (+34.39% rel, first on the team)
90.63% ExpectedGoalsFor% (+49.83% rel, first on the team)

TOI: 10:16

Not going to lie, I'm probably a bit biased towards Lias, and am very much hoping he succeeds. But his underlying numbers are Fantastic (albeit in a small sample size), far better than what i had hoped for.

I initially typed "will", but changed it to "should" because Quinn has seemed to have Andersson in the doghouse consistently for whatever reason. I know he chose Andersson to be on the team, but given his lack of usage to this point it makes me wonder if it was done so reluctantly. He certainly had earned more of a look out of the gate based on his preseason play. I imagine he must be a bit frustrated, but perhaps this is some Quinn test to see how he handles that kind of adversity. I'm out of ideas.

I have no idea if it’s true but based on what’s been said by the team, I get the feeling Quinn thinks Lias tops out as a bottom 6 player, and therefore he doesn’t mind giving him less minutes.

Quinn said he doesn’t want prospects playing 4th line minutes, as it’s probably better for their development to play more in Hartford. But if he sees Lias as a 3C/4C, no reason to worry about his minutes.

I don’t know, I’m just spitballing. I definitely think Lias is third on Quinn’s list between him, Chytil and Howden

Howden got eaten alive in possession, by the Ottawa Senators. That's not a good look.

That line wasn't dangerous either. I know Fast and Namestnikov aren't offense first guys, but it's still Ottawa.

Everyone was in on Buchnevich like this a few seasons ago and look where we are. Lias is next, just hope it doesn't take that long.

I think Quinn is protecting Lias from pressure by bringing him along slowly out of the spotlight and vs easier match-ups.

If he keeps playing a solid 2-way game, we'll see him move up the ladder shortly.

I'd be shocked if he's still getting so few minutes 10 games from now.

I don't know why Howden continues to get more minutes than Lias, but if it's to protect Lias and bring him along slowly fine I guess. But their play has been polar opposites so far these 2 games and in pre-season.

well Howden has a GWG to his name. Nice that Quinn trusts both Lias and Howden as PKers tho

Someone said it somewhere, in regards to his smile when Zibby scored Short-Handed i believe. But Lias absolutely worked his ass off to get into position for an easy tap-in. Compare his skating there to last season or before, and i think it's safe to say that off-season training is working for him.

Guys like Scheifele, Couturier and Mika are great examples why I trust in what Quinn is doing with Lias. He’s only 20 turning 21 this month.
So far he has dominated the ice in almost any given level and I trust that he will do the same in the NHL.

He's a good ol' Canadian boy
Quinn is American? His top line has no American or Canadian players.

Of the guys wearing letters 2 are European and 2 are north American.

This narrative that ethnicity has anything to do with it is total crap.

I think it comes down to one thing ..howden has produced more and has shown flashes of some really strong play in his tenure and lias has not.

With that said I think this season lias has earned more ice time but again, I don't see it as a howden vs lias thing...I see it as a howden and lias vs strome thing.

My issue isn't with howden, or his possession numbers...because I've actually liked a good amount of the core of his game...my issue is with strome whose done basically nothing to deserve his ice time. He....has...been...AWFUL.

You realize I was joking, right? Everyone always goes on about soft Euros. I was referring to that basically. We spent a weekend in Vancouver together. I thought you knew me better than this

The sad thing is that it shouldn't come down to Andersson or Howden, it should Andersson and Howden.

I get the sense that if Andersson keeps doing what he's doing, he'll see the ice more. I think you might see 30 seconds come off Howden's time, maybe a minute from Strome, etc.

Neither the premise nor the conclusion hold up, imo. "Dominated" is a strong word here. If you only consider his two-way nature though, you could be right.

I believe, he can become a dominating bottom-6 guy in a two-way role, but I don't see his offensive skill to warrant #2 center duties for any extended period of time.

I'd generally consider him a homerun, if he pans out as that elite two-way guy in the bottom-6. Been saying it since Lias has come here: he's the best at intercepting and anticipating plays. With time and experience his transition game should get much better and he'll be stronger and a bit faster. Absolute disruptor.

In my ideal roster he's got the #3 center postition on lock down.

Apparently that weekend was a bit more special to one of you than the other...
Don't worry AK, most knew you were being facetious.
