just my opinion, but i do not agree with these extremely low expectations of what Lias would return

yes this was an incredibly stupid maneuver, and he is having a mediocre season,

but still young, and scouts/GMs wont forget his SHL and international experiences as well
if not a Tovanen or Juolevi, then perhaps a package of lower profile similar aged guys

and many teams have players in complicated situations which drive trades
i mean, really, recall NYR got Strome for Spooner ...

Also, can we please get the AHL team out of Hartford. Sorry to anyone who lives there, but it's a depressed, high-crime city without a whole lot of culture. Why would a kid coming over from Europe want to spend any amount of time there?.

Hartford is a real ****hole. Downtown isn't too bad, but go a few blocks down and you're in rough neighborhoods. I imagine most of the players are in west hartford which actually has some really nice areas.

The Rangers aren't going to toss him away for picks. There are plenty of other prospects or young NHLers out there who are in similar situations and need a change of scenery. Worst case is they sit on him for a while as he plays in Europe.

If this guy's ceiling is really as low as many of you suggest then what's the big deal?

Seems like this is one of those "The Rangers are smarter than everyone else" picks.

I don’t know if it’s that, or rather, just what were they looking at? Given the upside in the 1st rounders they’ve taken since his selection, and the potential boom aspect of each player, Andersson stands out as the anomaly. I was never happy with his selection, but, then again, Vegas broke my heart when they took Cody Glass.

To me this is the most likely outcome. He plays the rest of the year in Sweden and is dealt around the draft/summer.

Given that pretty much nobody picked after him is drastically better today, I don't think it's one of those types of picks.

Edit: "Pretty much nobody" is too much I guess. Necas, Thomas, Jokiharju, Suzuki are decidedly better. Point being, they didn't take Lias at 7 out of nowhere when all the other players around him have been so much better. Andersson was the third ranked Euro skater from NHL Central Scouting pre-draft, above Necas, Heiskanen, Brannstrom, etc.

I am not absolving Lias of responsibility, but our inability to deal with young European players is disturbing. Kravtsov bolts to Russia (albeit temporarily). Kakko looks miserable and lost. Something is not right.
Kravstov got sent to the KHL's minor league from the same team he was a top liner player on the year before. He has a problem of his own, it's not an NYR issue. Kakko looks 18 and not a Crosby/McDavid/Ovechkin level player who can stand out at 18.

Necas looks good but there’s no way the team would have double dipped with Czech centers in the same 1st round.

lol as I type Necas having a career game against Toronto. Svechnikov already elite at 19, Aho elite C from a 2nd round pick. Must be nice...

What's amazing is that if they were scouting Chytil, they probably saw the Necas in some games. You wonder if they couldn't get to 7 and were in that 10-12 range if they take him instead.

It's all so strange. Andersson was playing in a better league, even if it is slightly better, and had more points. It's why the draft is such a crap shoot after a certain number of picks. Andersson just plateaued at 18 and 19. I also think jerking him around from the NHL camp to the SHL to the AHL and then back to the NHL in the same season was not ideal. Keeping him in one spot is the best thing for prospects, unless it's a bad situation.

Hopefully we could find a trade partner in the same boat and was high on Andersson and could fix him. Detroit seems like the spot. Tire fire product. A team he could realistically play in the NHL with, but are we getting a pick? I don't think they have players in the AHL that we would likely target. They had the 9th pick that year.

This could drag out and he might be part of a Kreider trade where he enhances the value enough to get the prospect they really want along with the 1st. I'd rather they just talk and say, go back to Sweden, get onto a team that will use you, get your money this season and we'll see what we could find for you as we get closer to the draft.

Again I think there's just a bit of an issue with kids coming from playing in the pro league of their country and thinking they'll make the NHL very quickly and be impact players. It's a vastly different game with some of the top talent in the entire world, but many of them push hard to come over sooner rather than later and take a dim view of spending time in the AHL.

Mckegg and Howden get top 9 minutes regularly. Brendan Smith is playing forward on an NHL roster. Lias can be mad about those things. The fact that he was never considered a viable option for any of those positions is probably why he and his agent felt they had to demand a trade so save his career. It’s clear that the rangers had no plan for him to be a part of their team going forward.

Lias hasnt proven he can play AHL hockey in the top six, I'd pump the brakes a bit.

At least with Kakko they (sort of) fixed it by flying over Tuomo Ruutu

Actually, he has. In his first 2 AHL seasons he was solid as a teenager playing a top-6 role in Hartford
Which is probably why going back to the SHL is best for him at this point. He didn't look anything more than invisible when I saw him last week. The AHL is not working for him right now.

at this point he will be lucky to be a 13th forward in the NHL. so glad the Rangers picked a minor leaguer at 7th overall.

He's frustrated. The one thing I blame him for is that he let this bad experience affect his game.

There is a whole slew of shit he could be blamed for. And "this bad experience" is almost exclusively a direct result of him being a bad hockey player. So he's letting his own abilities "affect his game" in what way? His game already didn't exist.

I get it. I have no idea what his potential is or what his future holds. I can only comment on what i have seen. I have seen a guy that just isn't noticeable unless you're specifically looking for him. I am not sure better linemates would have changed anything. Possible it would have, but even when a talented player is with lesser players, they stick out in some way. You see the potential even if the points aren't coming. He just doesn't do anything to move the needle when I have seen him in games, and I really want him to succeed. I would love for him to go back to Sweden, get his game back, fix relationships with the Rangers and be a successful NHL player. All are possible, but at least some are not likely. Ultimately, none of us really knows what is actually going on behind the scenes. We can only hope for a positive resolution for both parties.

When you're so over-the-top, it's kind of hard to tell.

But even then--you can have a bunch of NHL-level skills and NHL-level talent, but if something is so awful--like skating--you can still fail to be an NHL player. I mean if Alexander Ovechkin's skating was "atrocious" he'd probably have gone back to the KHL 15 years ago, because he'd just be a guy who had a great shot and jumped into every check. Ya know? Rocco Grimaldi has always has NHL skills and talent, but he didn't know how to succeed within his frame. He's figuring it out now. This is not to suggest Lias will figure it out--just to suggest that maybe his skills are NHL-caliber and it's one atrocious thing holding him back.

Remember that everyone had Andersson in the first round. It's not like the talent wasn't/isn't there. "Most NHL-ready prospect!" The guy has skating issues and apparently has major attitude issues. I don't buy the lack of NHL-level talent argument. If he had Callahan's work-ethic and attitude he'd be a successful 4C right now.

It unfortunately is actually debatable whether nor not he has enough talent anywhere in order to be in the NHL. Strength? Speed? Stick skills? Shot? passing? Board play? It all gets a big fat fail. Maybe defensively he can be in position so IQ?
