I gotta wonder though is it completely hands off or does there come some point where MGMT steps in and says hey having Haley, McKegg, etc play 10 mins a night is not the difference between losing or winning these games, they don't have a long term future here, developing our prospect should have some priority especially while we're rebuilding

I don’t get your point. There’s only so much ice time and running a fourth line with a bunch of prospects getting 10 minutes per night isn’t great

I have no problem with a fourth line of vets who get limited minutes

Doubt we get anything of value for him. Hated the pick the day it was made and then hated it even more when I saw him as a Ranger. Can we take a lesson going forward not to draft anyone in the the first round again who can't skate? Especially a top 10 pick.

People are now complaining about Kakko's skating as well. Precedent is now set.

On the other hand, ever since JD was hired, there’s been a sense of urgency to everything the Rangers have done that wasn’t there before

JD is very smart and more than capable of righting the ship..Big fan
Question is.. How long until he steps in and says enough is enough?

Starting to feel like the Andersson-Puljujarvi trade talk will somehow still be alive when Lias is in Detroit and Jesse is in Seattle

Matheson says that Edmonton isn't interested in the swap citing Lias doesn't play with NHL quickness (in their eyes).

Going to be tough to get much of anything for him other than some other team's project head case (Ho Sang).

Lias wasn't given a fair shot after outperforming others in pre-season, his play dipped, he was sent down, and now wants out. It's ugly and makes both the player and the organization look bad. Both sides are to blame here.

We'll see how he recovers from this.

I don't think he was given a fair shot either. If people are criticizing his slowness and inability to play at pace, first off, his foot speed this year has been night and day compared to a year ago, and two, look at the pace that this team now plays.

Lias along with Chytil, Kravs, Hajek and Howden were all rushed.

I was never the biggest LA fan but he wasn't given a fair shake.

To management's defense, who else could they've taken in the spot?

Maybe they should've timed their tank session a little better, no?

That could just be posturing to get a + in the deal now that NYR are in an equally bad position with Lias also requesting a trade.

My point is that he should be getting minutes. As long as he's in the lineup there's plenty of opportunities where the ice time could've been there. Howden getting moved to the 4th line, McKegg getting games on the 3rd line, Fast up and down the lineup, those are all opportunities where he could've been tried but was not

I can’t imagine Puljujarvi for Andersson happening now as much as I’d be good with it. If Edmonton thinks Lias isn’t worth Puljujarvi prior to this, the public trade request drives Lias’ value down even more for them

I’d be looking at a similarly aged prospect who can actually play this year. Maybe someone from that 2017 first round

Feels like he already has

Outside of bringing in a few staff members, he flat out said he wasn't going to interfere with JGs plan but after something like this happens, I would imagine his wheels starting to turn.

Kakko is a much better skater and can skate with the puck on his stick. He isn't a speed demon but there is no comparison between him and Lias.

yah it’s not even close. Kakko just needs to grow he’s a baby. He’ll become more explosive I’m certain you’ll see a monster improvement over the summer. He’ll add explosiveness and conditioning with muscle

Saying and doing are two different things, and it's more than just FO personnel

Previously viewed as a warrior move but now probably looked at as a spoiled kid, right?

Lol why would this make him spoiled? This guy has stuck it out and played by Quinn's rules for 2+ years now. He's literally done everything this team has asked of him. He's definitely a better player than he was drafted. It's obvious he's just not a Quinn guy and if I had to guess after spending my life around hockey and teams, he probably was 'not Quinn's guy' and became the team whipping post.

I don't understand how anyone can look at this situation and not blame the team. People are saying he didn't show enough when he was given 4th line minutes. Do people actually understand how rarely a 4th line guy grinds his way all the way to a top 6 role? What the hell was he suppose to show playing 9 minutes a night and adhering to playing Quinn's type of game in a 4th line role?

This kid isn't spoiled. He's a gamer and it's quite obvious it's in his DNA to be a leader and put everything on the line for his team. He plays with his heart on his sleeve for sure, something this team lacked for a long time and still does at times. I just honestly don't blame the kid after 2+ years of the same thing. "Follow our rules for you while we coddle Howden and let him get away with murder." I mean honestly, lost in all of this is the huge negative of what Quinn has done with Howden. Honestly, he's kinda ruined him. Howden to me had a really really great trajectory after his draft year. I truly believe, if not fed to the wolves, if Howden was taken and put in Hartford for a year or two, he would have came in and been a fan favorite. I think they could have really developed him into a often-scoring bottom six guy who is tough as nails to play against. He honestly just look ineffective and brash most of the time. I've rarely seen a guy as big as Howden get pushed around too. He's certainly not physically imposing, and his size is the only real reason I can think Quinn prefers him out of the box compared to Andersson.

Blemish on Quinn but it reminds me of Adrian Aucoin on Chiclets this week. Forget the coach in Toronto but he just wasn't his guy. Kept trying and trying and after a while Burkey just simply helped him get the hell out.

They've botched not one but two prospects in all of this. It's honestly disappointing.

And to everyone comparing him to Chytil and their stints being sent down, they don't exactly play the same kind of game. I wasn't expecting Lias to score as much rather than start honing in his game in all areas of the ice and learn to apply his IQ and grit to be effective for 15 minutes a night. I always saw more of a Couterier or Schenn so I didn't expect a finished product for a while. This is all disappointing.

We should have given him more of an opportunity to prove what he could do, instead of slotting Howden ahead of him for no good reason.

Also though, I think we should of been considering a trade or move to wing anyway; perhaps we get more value this way then if Gorton had to go looking of his own accord.
No good reason? Howden showed a hell of a lot more no matter where he was slotted when he played. When Howden was injured it derailed him and he hasn't gotten back on track. Anderson has no such record or excuse to lean on. He isn't NHL ready. I think the Rangers may have tried to rush him along a bit too. Larry Brooks would write an article on how badly the Rangers need him today, not tomorrow. then the next article would be how the Rangers are pushing to him too hard to fast. There is lots of blame to go around for all parties.

So many overreactions in this thread. This is not a major blemish on JG or anything. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Isn’t that the draft we hade a deal in place for fourth overall? Isn’t that the draft where it was reported 1st and 2nd choices at 7th overall were taken at 5 and 6?

The pick that could actually impact Gorton would be if Kravtsov busts. I don’t think he will fwiw, but that would be a significantly bigger blemish on JG’s tenure with the rangers than the Andersson pick will ever be.

not for nothing but hearing after every draft how the guy who turned into a stud was “our guy” and we tried to trade for him is getting old. I’m sure many trades almost happened. But they didn’t.

I always keep thinking about how Sweden's top line at the WJC was shite until they moved Lias there. That whole scenario to me is who Lias is. It's clearly a stage/level that he was fully developed at and although not the stud, he helped pick the studs up.

I always have felt he was meant to be a top end middle six guy who is a real pain to play against and can finish for his teammates as well as help them get the job done and open up the ice with his peskiness.

Yeah, when Brendan Smith has been given more Top 9 minutes in the last 2 weeks than Andersson has in 2 years, no wonder he wants out. He showed promise in the preseason & first 10 games this season and Quinn ignored it, and benched him at every possible opportunity. Probably thinks (fairly) that as long as Quinn is coach, he'll never get a fair shot.
I'm sorry, but if he played with as much promised as some seem to think, he'd be playing between Kakko and Panarin -- not Ryan Strome.
