The Rangers and Quinn screwed this one up by not giving him at least 10-15 games with decent wingers and second PP time
Then at least you would have given him a slight chance ,,,
Now he is worth basically nothing and a wasted pick

Hopefully they can deal him for a long term asset in their bottom 6.

Who was supposed to be pulled off the PP in favor of 9 career points, and 3 career goal Lias Andersson? I get that he didn’t have great line mates, but did the guy have one memorable shift in his 17 NHL games this year? Quinn has brought along a lot of young roster players the last couple seasons. He hasn’t been shy about playing Chytil, ADA, Fox, Lindgren, Hajek, Georgiyev, Kakko, etc... At some point you need to produce at the NHL level to earn ice time.

What a f***in' nightmare mess of a scenario this all is.

The unsolved mystery will always be:

What happened in between Lias' fantastic preseason and howdys mediocre one that merited howdy getting the better shot out of camp?

Howden hasn’t been particularly good, but he’s been better than Lias. I’m guessing they see more potential in Howden. For all of Howden’s faults, he doesn’t appear to be skating in cement.

I was talking about camp/pre season. There was zero reason howdy ever should've started on the 3rd line.

Just to play devil's advocate... Might the Rangers be viewed as favoring North American players ovee, say, Europeans? Gorton, Quinn, Sather, JD, Clark... To be clear, I don't think it makes sense they would sacrifice results to indulge their...taste. And I think plenty of Europeans have done great under NYR management. But Andersson here appears to be implying he was wronged somehow and it can't logically be a matter of 4-5 mins a game that drove him over the edge.
Again. Just throwing out a scenario to try to figure out the reasoning behind a pretty unprecedented (or at least very extreme and rare) act.

I don’t think there is any evidence to support that. Two top young goalies are European, Rangers acquired Hajek as the main prospect in the Mcdonough trade and used the first to select Lundkvist. Kakko, Andersson, Kravstov, Chytil - all first rounders. They just gave Panarin a monster deal and locked up Zibanejad before he established himself as the player he is now... after trading a Canadian Brassard for him.

I do think the Rangers need more “North American style.” North/South types. That’s not to say the guys have to be North American - I couldn’t care if they were Nigerian, but the Rangers do lack guys in that mold who play a certain way and I think the Rangers want to be tougher to play against based on their use of Haley/Smith. Obviously they lack skill but you can see what they are trying to establish in the bottom 6.

Just to add, I don’t think Lias ever established himself as an NHL player, but seemingly has the ego of a high end talent. Two best forwards on the team are a Russian, a Swede, and their top prospect is Finnish. We are also talking about a kid who threw a medal into the stands. At the time I thought it was kind of funny and cool that he was so competitive but maybe it was an early sign of immaturity. I’m certain the Rangers aren’t out to get their 7th overall pick which they got for Stepan/Raanta bc they have something against Swedes. Recent drafting, Lundqvist, Zibanejad, and Fast work against that theory.

Yea, I get your point. I would’ve given him a shot as a 3C or winger for a few games just to give him a look, but I truthfully didn’t see him flashing anything in his ice time. You’re not wrong, I just don’t think it would’ve made a difference. I wasn’t looking for him to put up a hat trick next to Haley on the 4th line, but I honestly don’t remember once thinking that Lias had a great shift or made a big play. I hope he figures it out, but I’m not confident.

Ultimately, both sides are to blame here. That's what it really comes down to.

Are they though? Lias made the team but did nothing with his ice time then got frustrated when he was sent down to work on his game. It sounds like entitlement, and a kid not willing to go back to the AHL to work on his game. The same strategy worked out pretty well for Chytil and the Rangers. If he really felt the need for a new situation then there’s a way to do it without jumping ship and getting suspended.

I agree that it looked like his game changed from preseason to the regular season. I do know that his mates changed big time. Howdy got gifted 3C and flashed a lot of awful play especially early on. It just confuses me. Lias didn't even get a chance to 'flash' playing with the anchoriest anchors on our squad.

All around bummer for our club.

There was a play tonight where it was a pretty obvious icing. Howden flies down the ice negates the icing and gets the puck up to the point.

Nothing happens from the play, but that play is why howden is in the NHL right now and lias isn't. Lias never makes anything happe. When he's on the ice. He's just....there.

The NHL holiday roster freeze ended when Friday turned into Saturday, but there is nothing simmering — let alone, imminent — on a deal for Lias Andersson, under Rangers suspension without pay since walking out on the AHL Wolf Pack on Dec. 20 immediately after requesting a trade.
The Post has been told by individuals with knowledge of the situation that there has been little interest shown in the No. 7-overall selection of the 2017 draft. The 21-year-old Andersson has recorded nine points (3-6) in 66 NHL games while posting 39 points (15-24) in 74 career AHL contests.
At the same time, the Rangers are not going to necessarily bite on the first offer even if the club has little leverage in talks.
Andersson had just three points (two goals, one assist) in his past 10 games with the Wolf Pack — all in the same game. Play like that would not have earned him the promotion that will be coming to another Hartford forward in the wake of the fractured hand suffered by Brendan Lemieux in the Rangers’ 5-3 victory over Carolina on Friday at the Garden.
It is believed Andersson spent the holiday with his family in the New York area. It is unclear whether the Rangers would welcome the Swede back if he has a change of heart, though the organization probably might have a collective-bargaining agreement issue in holding to an indefinite suspension.
At this point, though, there is no indication of movement on any front.

I partly blame our development staff, hehe.

Lias would shine if he played with Zucc so no doubts in my mind. Hopefully the Wilds will sign him soon. :)

If Wilds miss out - hopefully Nucks will create room for him in the cold north in Canada! ;)

But seriously.. I believe that Lias Andersson will have a chance elsewhere in NHL in near future and wish him good luck for sure!

I don't see a Euro bias. I see this as a situation where the kid butts heads with the coach. Feels slighted by the coach and is unwilling to work to get better. His skating and processing of the game is slow. It is even slow for AHL standards. Lias will become a pain in the ass third liner in due time. He just needs to call Barb Underhill to help. From what I have seen as he plays now he will be nothing more than a 4A player. I speculate that this is the first time Lias has had to face adversity in his hockey career, maybe even life and it appears he is acting like a kid with a silver spoon would.

You were a kid when the Coliseum was there but you talk about stuck up Yalies ? Are you a 50+ hitting on college kids or something ?

New Haven is a good town, great music scene and plenty of good places to go out and have a good time. as mentioned good pizza and a decent amount of good bars. Hartford has seen better days but to make CT out as some hell hole isn't accurate at all. not to mention Hartford is only about an hour or so from bigger cities. Not like these guys are stuck in Siberia or something

But at the end of the day you dont quit on your team. and to be honest he was given an opportunity to grind and go in to the corners and etc and he didnt seem like he wanted to play a Fast like game. It really seems like the kid thinks he is better than he is and doesn't want to adapt to a better league by changing up his game. Which is fine but you make it harder to get that trade if you dont have success on the ice and also come with potential headaches.

I am 37 not 50 plus. New Haven is meh. I have lived here my whole life outside of the four years I spent in the Navy. The bar scene is ok, but that also gets tiresome after a while. We are spoiled with our pizza this I concede. The music scene is still only Toad's and College Street and those venues are B list at best. But, living here or Bridgeport or Hartford sucks especially when you compare it to NYC. Are you from CT yourself?

A 1-for-1 trade for Kostin or Tolvanen makes sense. I don't think the value is off. I think fans in general tend to overvalue other team's prospects

Random observation: at last year’s WJC Kostin reminded me of Barbashev from a few years before then.

Are these the same sources who told him he Rangers were not trading Derek Stepan?

I don’t know what your point is. Yeah he didn’t get that one right but I’m not sure that then he was communicating on behalf of the Rangers (rather than expressing his own personal thoughts). Otherwise in most of these cases Brooks is right on, merely acting as the loudspeaker on behalf of the team.

It's crazy that we still need to have this discussion at this point, isn't it?

I will wait for someone with actual sources to back it up before I believe it. Dan Boyle was right
Yes, Hall of Fame hockey writer Larry Brooks, who for many, many years was the only guy around with any real access to the team, and the only guy who would provide readers with any inside info--even things as simple as injury updates--has NO sources. That's a joke of a post, Steven. You might not trust everything he reports, but to claim he has no sources is...I don't know, jealousy? Ignorance? Wrong, for sure.
