Prospect Info: Liam Ohgren LW, 19th Overall, 2022 NHL Draft

Anything good to report?
No, nor anything bad. Stenberg, OTOH, has a HT, and Edstrom looks vg. Both were available when we picked Stramel. Wahlberg looks decent, too. Lekkeremaki has looked dangerous once or twice, but he, Ostlund, and Ohgren are pretty quiet so far.

I liked his whole game, didn’t get on the board but was in position for chances and made some nice plays to maintain possession for his team to drive later offense. He plays like a pro, and a conservative one compared to most juniors, he’s got the Swedish structure down and likely why he is a captain for the team. Had a couple shots into the goalies pads, his teammates found space there but he didn’t. He’s not going to wow people very often, but does have good vision/spatial awareness.

Based off of what people are writing here, seems like a clone of Johan Larsson.
He looks a lot better with the puck on his stick than Larsson did in his Jrs games.

If I had to make a Wild comparison, he’s sort of a blend between MarJo and Foligno. He likes to skate the puck, could use more of a net front drive attitude, but he does not give it away to force passes, and he battles very well on board plays. He is not an offensive driver in the traditional sense, but looks like a good enabler for his teammates to me.

I’m not seeing that skating that some are talking about. Looks pretty average.

Strong stride and good balance, he keeps his stick on the ice at almost all times which is likely contributing to the appearance of being hunched over, though he could use some form work. Speed is not game breaking, but nothing problematic in his skating to me and he has some strengths in it too. Haven’t seen him in any long pressured shifts yet to see endurance and if there’s much deterioration when tired, I believe that was a note on him in the past. NHL average to slightly above seems reasonably projectable for him in the future, at least to me, updated for this recent sample.

Writing that and picturing him in my mind, I actually see some Nino comparisons.

IMO - I'm seeing some really good straight-forward top speed - and add that to his pretty impressive size (he looks to be 195-200lbs) and I see a pretty scary train when he goes into the forecheck and driving towards the net.

However, I think what others might also be seeing is his average acceleration. His first steps look to lack burst so he isn't a "quick" player and it takes awhile from his speed to ramp up. And alot of times in hockey, you don't have that luxury to ramp it, you only have space for 2-3 steps and he doesn't get to reach his top speed so he can look average. But there were 2-3 instances I saw skating nearly end-to-end to get the puck deep and he looked pretty dangerous at that speed.

But I think that is something he can work on easily over the next year or two.

He's made some very good short space passes, similar to Rossi (not saying their style is the same). As others report, he plays a mature game. Good cycling/puck protection and should have had a few assists yesterday. Has looked fine against the Canadians. He doesn't have the offense Stenberg/Edstrom, but is better along the boards and defensively.

Looks much better than last year IMO. Last year he just turned it over and was invisible. I am not sure I see the offense to be a top 6xer though. But boy does he fit the Wild's third liner grinder with leadership, positional awareness, etc.

Randomly - my memory is turning to shit but I don't recall seeing Canada get outplayed for an entire game like this in quite awhile.

Anyone with the lowdown?
Missed the beginning.
Very involved, was in on 3 extreme high danger chances in the first two periods, you will see him in the highlight reel for a Rousseau save that had Henrik Lundqvist in awe in the stands. Also had a nice give and go play where he just failed a backhand pass to hit a guy alone in the slot.

skating and strength still look good against the Canadian competition, just good steady play that has been positive each shift.

I see Marcus Johansson, which isn't a bad outcome. His skating is already decent, but will probably improve. Good, not great, size and strength. Good puck handler and vision, supposedly has a good shot but doesn't seem to get it off. Plays a reasonably smart two way game. Just a good all round player w/o any significant weaknesses, but not sure if he has anything that sticks out, either. Screams middle sixer, to me...hope I'm wrong.

I think he should play another year in the SHL and develop his skating on the bigger ice. He didn't have the summer training that is needed to properly develop this year due to the back injury.
Gives him time to practice, the lighter schedule of the SHL and lesser grind could benefit him more than the endless bus rides of the AHL.
Also his scoring is going to be better when his core strength and confidence grows.

I think it's best to wait and see how this season plays out. He started late, and is just getting back into things. If he is healthy and productive for the rest of the year and wants to come over to NA, then it would be hard to say no. He may, or may not get some NHL TOI. A lot depends on how Yurov, Marat, Bankier, and the like are playing, and where they are playing(i.e. KHL, AHL, NHL).
If he improves over the course of this season, has a good summer and camp, then it isn't out of the question that he makes the NHL team, or at least gets to play a few games if he is in NA. If he stays in the SHL, then he has to wait till the fall of 2025.

I see more grit and the capability to cycle/go to the net out of him than a MoJo, not sure he has the ability to skate through the neutral zone (at least yet) and gain entries (I feel like that has been the only consistent thing MoJo has offered this year). In short, I think that if he doesn't develop offense, he can still be valuable on a checking line, whereas I don't view MoJo as having a lot of value in the defensive zone or giving the coach the opportunity to play PK.

Just my opinion, of course.

I'm there with you - I see more physicality in Ohgren. He's not an enforcer but he has a better knack of how to use his 200lbs to drive hard towards the net with a power move using his body and getting low(I like that he gets low :D) as well as more tenacity to engage in board battles. And he likes to shoot.

Despite not putting up points this tourney, IMO he looks so much better than last year as he doing all the right things as a meat and potatoes type of pro. I think we will see him in a Wild jersey sooner than later. Wasn't sure if i was you who made the Nino reference, but could be in between Nino and Mojo. A 40-50pt complimentary powerforward that plays a simple pro game. A great 3rd wheel to a Rossi-Boldy line. Or match him with JEE who plays a similar style, with Kaprizov as the key winger.

With reading all the takes on him, it’s sounding a lot like Nino vibes. Powerful shot, good two way game. Won’t take over offensively but won’t hurt it either. I’d be ok with that outcome.

came here to say the same thing. The skating is eerily similar.

I’m no Bill Guerin, but I also like that he is a captain.
I'm hoping he can have MarJo's skating, and with better leg extension and maturity there's a chance. Pretty high bar, though. I think Ohgren is more physical, but we'll have to see if he turns into a paper tiger when playing at higher levels. I have zero memory of MarJo when he was young, so i don't know what he was like.

Shot is better, I think. Him being named C on a talented team is a good sign , in general. Means he is well regarded both on and off the ice by both players and coaches. I will be curious to see how he finishes up playing in the SHL. Worst case would be another injury, best, going on a P/PG run.

I think he'll be a better skater.

WJC captains have been a somewhat mixed bag fir the Wild: mainly good, and sure NHLers one and all.

The Good: Kaprizov, Ek, Zucker, Granlund

The not as good: Kunin, Larsson
I'll go to my grave thinking Johan Larsson got hosed by that trade.

Buffalo had a ton of prospects, and a team is going to favor their internally drafted guys they are invested in.

He had a higher ceiling put go pigeon holed into 4th line

I was a huge Larsson homer and agree. I'm not sure Buffalo developed one prospect in the time he was there. I think he'd have had a different career given a different environment.
