I finished Godfather part 3. In my older age (31) I can now see why it's much less appreciated. The script is much less tight, I think half of al pacino's dialogue was exposition, and in general it seemed thinner on plot in spite of having an approximately equal run time.

Pacino had a few good moments though like "just when I think I'm out they pull me back in", and the end scenes involving the daughter.

I liked Andy Garcia's portrayal too which I think most people did. He came off as Sonny's son.

There's a part of the plot that didn't make sense. If immobilliare is the world's largest landlord with 6 billion in aasets, how can they buy a controlling interest for 600 million?

As ECW pointed out the plot is repetitive. It's the third movie with a nefarious Don, and the third one that closes with all of the enemies successfully killed off.

I loved this movie when I was younger. Nowadays I don't understand why I liked it but I think it was a mix of the opera murders, Sonny's kid and the big death at the end. When I watch it now, the opera murder is sort of a rip-off of what Depalma did on Untouchables and Garcia just tries to match Sonny's intensity with overacting. I still like him somewhat but the problem was he had nothing to work with at script level and he ended up the typical charming rogue who sometime has burst of emotion. While the original(Sonny), you felt like he was "street", dude was 100% gangster brute yet he was more fascinating for it cause he wasn't Godzilla, he was pretty much part of the tapestry of the workings of this family. There was not much to Garcia's character, who was he really, he was a cypher while James Canh's character was real.

Rogue nation was incredible. The best action movie I've seen in ages. You're right about cruise. His persona off screen turns people off but he has now nailed down being a huge action star. If you have t seen rogue nation ,get cracking. Just awesome. Oh and Rebecca Ferguson is absolutely gorgeous

Cruise and Ferguson did all their stunts for the movie. That is impressive.

That's BS. Insurance is a big part of Hollywood (Robert Downey Jr. almost lost his career because of it), movie star are not permitted to do stunt. Especially when you think how little protection stunt people get.

As for Tom Cruise, I will always remember a clip from an Entertainment Tonight style show where they showed him performing a stunt. He walk over to the middle of the street and lay down. The camera cut and show the director who yell action. A truck come, brake and sweep over the figure on the pavement, the director yell cut. Camera cut again to the director who says "we got it" then zoom over the pavement where Tom Cruise rise. Yes Tom, I'm sure you just risk your life and the two camera cut were not to switch to the stunt double. :shakehead

What the hell is going on in true detective. I liked the start of it, found it intriguing but man it took a turn for the wrong. Nothing makes sense.

I guess everyone is lying then. Every one has been reporting he did all his stints. Even his cast members said it. I'm not a Huge Cruise fan but the guy has turned into an action icon and yes he did all his stunts

My god, I don't think I've ever seen a scene that moved me as much as the closing one of Mr. Robot's last episode. That show is something else. Just when you think it's reached the absolute heights it can - it takes one more leap. Can't recommend it enough.

I am going to be starting on Mr Robot next. I'm a geek at heart so this should be right up my alley. Looking forward to it. If you like shows about IT you might want to check out Halt and Catch Fire as well as Silicon Valley.

Other shows with potential I plan on checking out as time permits. Just picked up another 4TB hard drive so I should be good to go for awhile. :)

The standards for super hero movies have been raised by a far margin that half attempts at success won't cut it.

Add in likely predictable storylines and it's borderline terrible.

I haven't seen fantastic 4 but I'm more referring to Spiderman. Was 'ok' with Garfield and they are doing a reboot. I doubt they add any good elements to the story besides a different person in the costume.

Honestly, I have no idea what is going on and I am loving it. I'm so confused. One episode they have a have shoot out, next episode Velcoro is fired and back on the team in a secret position. It's the season finale and they aren't even close to solving the case as far as I know.

Just saw Chappie. What's with this director's obsession with changing bodies? This guy has an obsession with the body changing stuff. And with cut-off arms.

I watched Halt and catch fire. Personally I thought season 1 was a lot better than the last one and the show has lost my interest recently.

Sense8 started off really slowly, the first few episodes are challenging, but it has one of the best payoffs I have ever seen. There's a musical concert scene at the end, it was so perfect, I literally felt like I was covered in a warm blanket.

Trainwreck (2015)
Director: Judd Appatow
Screenplay: Amy Schumer
Rotten Tomatoes: 86%
Starring: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, LeBron James, Brie Larson, John Cena

Trainwreck is the story of a woman New York journalist in her 30s named Amy (Amy Schumer), who is still living like she is in her 20s, having a lot of forgettable sex with lots of men, smoking pot, drinking heavily, and not settling down. She is contrasted by her younger sister Kim (Brie Larson) who is completely together, married to a nerd, living a suburban life and expecting her first baby. The plot is a completely generic rom-com / hero's journey where Amy's character arc is to become an adult as she takes control of her own career, has to be more mature after her father dies, and she finds a man who is a nice guy (mostly) and a rich doctor, so after meeting, falling in love, and fighting, she realizes that he is the one for her so she decides to be more mature and well-kept. The end.

Yeah, so the story's pretty dumb and you've seen it all before, but I'd still recommend seeing it because it's incredibly funny. I haven't laughed this hard in a movie in a while, at least since Lego Movie, possibly since Wedding Crashers. There are lots of jokes about sex, situations, etc, but the jokes are not mean-spirited sexist or racist BS, they're character-driven jokes poking fun at the characters themselves as we get to know them. There is a great moment where LeBron James (who is playing himself) stages an intervention to deal with his friend and doctor's relationship, and we get to poke fun at the shallowness of sports commentary. You need to see it to believe it, it's great.

Far From Men / Loin des Hommes (2015)
Director: David Oelhoffen
Story by: Albert Camus
Screenplay: David Oelhoffen
Rotten Tomatoes: 79%
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Reda Kateb

Far From Men, the English title for a French-Language film called Loin des Hommes, is about two men navigating the early stages of the Algerian War for Independence. Daru (Viggo Mortensen), a veteran of the WWII North Africa campaign, plays a school teacher, we see him teaching history to a class of entirely Arab kids in an attempt to better their world, but he is also a member of the white privileged class. Early in the film, a Frenchmen brings him an Arab (Mohammed, played by Reda Kateb) who is tied to, asks him to take the Arab to another town where he is to be tried and likely executed for killing his cousin. Daru refuses at first, and then reluctantly agrees to take him there once he realizes the Arab will certainly die if left to his own devices. The movie is based on The Guest / L'Hote by the great French philosopher Albert Camus.

The movie's plot is that we follow these two men as they make a walking journey to the other town, which is a few days of walking, along the way they encounter ruins, bad weather, Algerian resistance, and French oppressors. What really matters though, is the character work. Both Daru and Mohammed have their destinies determined in whole by the way, in manners not of their choosing and there's nothing they can do about it.

Daru (Viggo Mortensen speaks a great French btw), doesn't want to be involved with the Algerian Independence War. He supports Independence, but he has seen enough fighting and he just wants to be a school teacher, to do good. Though he is born in Algeria, he is seen as a Frenchmen. The entire movie is his own struggle to not be involved, even as there are various forces and people pulling him in, that I can't describe without pulling. Similarly with Mohammed, he comes off as pathetic and somewhat of a loser at first, though eventually we learn that he is actually a phenomenally brave man, motivated by nothing more than a love of his own family and his younger brothers, and his desire for their safety. He too, is being pulled by the conflicts in that world, but not by that between Algeria and France, but that between different Algerians in his own village.

Far From Men is quite the journey. In its brisk 1 hour 50 minute runtime, we learn the life stories of these two men, we see them form a bond as true and strong as that of any two men we know, we see the early stages of the Algerian war of independence, we learn a lot about Algeria, and we see in action the theme that there can be no neutrality in subjects of war.

Aside: Though there were distracting English-language subtitles at the bottom, I was able to listen to the French the whole time, everybody enunciated properly, I only used the subtitles when the characters spoke Arabic ... which Mortensen apparently also speaks.
