How about Matthew Barnaby? He was a less *****y, maybe even more insane Sean Avery. But he played on horrible Rangers teams so he wasn't as appreciated as Avery.

Barnaby wasn’t appreciated as much? I think Barnaby wasn’t appreciated as much by the newer wave of Ranger fans because they weren’t around back then. All Ranger fans loved Barnaby when he was there. Guy was a nutcase that would fight the biggest and toughest guys in the nhl.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong I was relatively new at the time as a fan.

Barnaby is my favorite. I was at this game that I'm posting and it might have been the most amazing thing I ever saw at a hockey game.

my idol, Don Murdoch. Stay off the drugs, kids...

Cam "The Bam" Connor. Scored a great OT goal in Philly at the Spectrum in the 80's playoffs as me and my loudly celebrating buddies had beer poured on us. Eliminated the Flyers that game.

Mark Pavelich. Great speedster little guy who played with a giant heart, Zucc in a different era. If anyone remmembers him, he was a bit of a recluse and didn't like the spotlight. True to his form, he moved to a remote area of Minnesota where it was something like a 6 mile driveway into his house. Tragically, his wife fell off a balcony he was working on and died. We miss you Pav, and thanks for the memories (plus the gold medal in 1980)

I didn't love Barnaby. I want my team to win fights, not lose them. Nothing worse than being in the other team's building and having the visiting team's fans up and cheering because some plug beat the crap out of Silas Barnaby while he asks for more.

He was like Avery, had good skill but people outside of the fan base thought he was just a goon.

Eh, I wouldn’t say that. Avery was a slightly more skilled player that was a major shit disturber and wouldn’t fight all that much. Barnaby would fight every chance he got. He wasn’t an “enforcer” and was a bit of a pest as well, but he was much more of a fighter than Avery.

They were close, but not the same exact type of player.

How about:
Ray Ferraro | Shane Churla
Nathan Lafayette | Jari Kurri
Ian Laperriere | Marty McSorely
Mattias Norstrom |

one of the worst trades in my 50 years as NYR fan,
not quite Middleton, or Ridley/Miller,
but terrible.
Pepi played 13 more seasons,
Matti 12 more as a top d-man,
even Lafayette played >100 more NHL games.
