Sandy McCarthy. He was one of my favorite players because for an enforcer he had excellent hands. A goal I remember pretty vividly from the first season I started following the Rangers (00-01) he got out of the penalty box and deked the goalie out of his pants. I'm not 100% sure who it was against, maybe Chicago, but I think I may be confusing it with a different goal. Anyone know if there's a place I can find old goals?

Edit: Maybe saying excellent hands is too much, but he had good skill for what he was.

I can't find the video but I believe it was in fact against Chicago.

McCarthy was legit talented. Could have been even better if he focused on that instead of fighting every game, but it was a different time.

Pat Verbeek...

Darren Langdon, what an animal. I don't think I ever saw him lose a fight.

As a kid I always had a soft spot for players with Dutch names. Verbeek, Nieuwendyk, DeVries. I remember playing the NHL video games as a kid and always trading for these 3 because it was the closest thing to having Dutch players on my team.

Now with Sprong, we finally have one for the first time since the 1980s

How do you remember that goal? It was pretty obscure. I only remember it because it was the first season I was watching the Rangers.

He was on a pretty decent line with Mike York and Theo Fleury his first season and first tenure with the team. Wonder what he's up to now.

Quick story, I actually got to "crash" a Rangers team dinner in Georgetown after they played the Capitals in November 2001 I think it was. Team was having a good time with him and kept calling him by his real name Alexander and laughing. Nothing much scandalous happened that night other than some of the staff being like "who are these kids, how did they get in this restaurant" Lindros/Leetch/York/Malholtra/Fleury were all really cool and the table we approached aka were closest to, others we didn't really interact with.

Poti might be one of my most hated Rangers based solely on his performance on the ice.
That first year we had him (the first full year), he was the most productive defender we had in forever. Then it all went to shit for him, he lost confidence, etc. I still think he was serviceable and most of the vitriol directed towards him was because we all knew he could be more, and not so much based on terrible play. That was my take, anyway. Also people hated him because we moved him for York, who everyone loved.

Mike York, talk about a guy who feel off a cliff. He had four or five good years, and then after that first year with the fish sticks, his game fell off a cliff. He had to go to Germany. He had a nice career overall, but he looked like he was on his way to 1000 games and 600-700 points. He had half that.

Part of it was the rumor that it was supposed to Poti for Dvorak and the next game Dvorak got hurt and York was put in the deal instead.

I forgot all about that. Dvorak was so mediocre (I mean he was a decent all-around player) outside of the one year of the Czech Mates magic with Nedved and Hlavac.

Hard to believe D-Vo played close to 1300 games.

Speed is always tantalizing. And people always hope that the 30 goal season was the rule, not the exception.

To put it into context, Dvorak had the ACL injury which doesn't seem so long ago but was actually 16-17 years ago. This was back when that was a 12 month minimum full recovery before the days of Adrian Peterson and Evgeni Malkin and coming back in six months. I think Rod Woodson was the only guy to ever come back from something like that so quickly back then.

DVo and Kloucek both had knee injuries that altered their careers although yes, Dvorak was a very good role player who played a very long time and went to a SFC with the Oilers in 2006. Imagine if he was around today.

@nyr2k2 York's issue was his conditioning and general lack of fitness. He would always be awesome to start a year but worn out by the end.

I remember when I went to a Rangers-Flyers game in 2007 (Girardi's first game) the Flyers fans we were sitting with kept on calling him the Pilsburry Doughboy and mocking his fitness.

Think that was more of an indictment of what kind of a team was being iced.

You're right, but he he was still very productive those two years.

That Czechmates line was fun as hell to watch and in 2001, they would have made the playoffs had not Richter tore his ACL again going post to post against the Hawks in February and Fleury going into substance abuse after the nightclub incident.

Fleury was the leading scorer in the league for most of that season. He was on pace for over 100 points halfway through the year. Then Sakic and Jagr came on, especially when Lemieux came back in December 2000.

Then it was McLean and Hebert in net after Richter went down and we all know how that played out.

I remember Kloucek got those two suspensions on what I thought were clean plays and then tore his knee up and was never the same player.

I liked him.

I was at Hebert's debut. It was in DC versus the Caps. I used to always go to Rangers/Caps when I was living there. Petr Smerk played that game. He turned into Richard Litner. LOL.

That teams in 2000-01 was too erratic to be a playoff team from what I remember. a .500 team that has no consistency. Bad coaching.

Yeah it was sad. He was a beast. Had some concussion problems when he was on Nashville and by the time he got to Atlanta, really couldn't skate too well anymore.

Petr Smrek, he was a doozy. I remember Sam had to try to hype him up despite the fact that there was nothing there. Lintner was awful too, albeit a bit later.

The 2000-01 team could have made it had not Fleury went into Substance Abuse and Richter not torn his ACL. They were playing well enough, but the defense was bad. Missing Malakhov from the get go hurt them big time. How sad is it that Malakhov was a missing piece? Losing Schneider in the expansion draft to Columbus really hurt as well.

Nice Omega pic for your profile.

Malakhov was funny. He just wasn't a motivated NHLer for most of his career. Remember the skiing incident when he was with Montreal?

The two times he was motivated were when Lou Lamierello had one of his infamous one on ones with him for the Devils second Cup run, and the first half of 2001-02 where he played well just enough to ensure he made Team Russia for the Olympics. Besides that he was extremely erratic and inconsistent.

He became the definition of journeyman after the Rangers. Hlavac to a degree as well.
