If you're relying on Klingberg, Bertuzzi and Domi to solve all your defensive problems while being $8m over the cap and still needing to sign your actual starting goalie

Well shot.

There's a gator here in the pond. People upstairs are daring my me to shoot it and eat it. Something exciting needs to happen or bi might just do such thing because

We need a damn f

Not a statement I expected to read this morning.

My vote is you wrestle the gator then eat it.

Buffalo has been after Pesce for awhile, I say offer them Pesce or Skjei and Drury plus a 2nd for Alex Tuch, a contract that we can handle. 4.5 per year big forward 6'4 220 who can put the puck in the net both 5 on 5 and the PP

overpayment yes, worth the gamble, I say yes again.

Tuch isn’t going anywhere, he actually wants to play in Buffalo. They can’t trade players like that

Honestly, I'm not sure Buffalo is a good trading partner. The only guys I would be interested in from them are all guys they aren't going to make available in a move, so unless we're looking at a futures player, and we aren't. there isn't a realistic deal to be made there.

Much rather just do the inevitable and look at a Pesce+ for Nylander or Laine that have long been rumored.

Understand what you are saying, however, you entice them enough and you can possibly get the trade, Hell, I'd make the 2nd a 1st if need be and throw in Morrow just to see if I get a bite. Talks don't hurt and I'm sure the front office is talking to all teams, but I'd rather go all in for Tuck and then worry about Karlson

There are many players I would rather go after than Karlsson. It is going to take something gross to get Tuch out of Buffalo.

You would think if we offered Bertuzzi $5.25M and Toronto offered $5.5M, he would be better off in NC with lower taxes and less pressure from media.

Still think we need 1 more forward to add to our group? Tarasenko?
Depends on how much upfront money we offered. Almost all of it upfront from the Leafs compared to all salary from us might be more money overall if invested well.

Realistically, if the Canes could turn 1 more year of Pesce + picks/prospects into 1yr of Nylander, that’s a win. Keep Skjei as an own rental and rock something like this:

Bunting-Aho-Jarvis
Svechnikov-Kotkaniemi-Nylander
Teravainen-Necas(?)-Fast
Martinook-Staal-Drury/Suzuki/Rees/Ponomarev

Slavin-Burns
Orlov-TDA
Skjei-Chatfield

i dont see the win. we wont be able to afford a 9+ million Nylander long term.

I floated a Pesce + for Tuch a while back. Agree that this would be a very difficult trade to execute for a variety of reasons. Given Toronto's moves this weekend, I think Nylander should be the target. Unless he and Matthews agree to take meaningful discounts, I see Nylander being traded. Seems like Toronto will not get shorter term and lower AAV for each of these guys.

Would you rather have a 30g scorer as an own-rental or Pesce? That’s how I see it.

I’m not worried about what Nylander wants on an extension. He’d essentially be a rental.

With the addition of Orlov and another own-rental in Skjei, the D as a whole can withstand the loss of Pesce while they add a proven scorer up front to what’s already there.

sure if we doing a turbo and pesce for Nylander deal, fine. Call it rentals for rentals. But trading Pesce with futures takes it out of that realm.

I’m not talking high end futures (Nikishin, Morrow, etc). I’d be offering up the PHI 2nd and prospects like Gunler/Koivunen or ELC fodder like Ponomarev/Drury/Suzuki/Honka/
Heimosalmi, etc. Or, perhaps just Pesce + the ‘24 1st.

That just won't work for the Leafs for cap purposes. Part of what makes this deal work for them is not only fit, but saving money by moving from Willy to Brett. Adding turbo makes their situation worse capwise then they already are.

I don’t want them to trade Teravainen. He’s in a contract year and coming off a down year. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t rebound to his normal 50-60pt self.

No reason, outside of perhaps making room for Karlsson, to move TT, in my view.

I also wouldn’t be shocked if they’re able to re-up him at a team friendly term and rate next summer if he does have a rebound season.

Not that I’m an advocate for the Karlsson trade, but Pesce and TT would make some sense that way.
