TSN is tripping all over themselves trying to explain why Matthews has a moral obligation to take less than market value in his extention
IS HE TWO MILLION BETTER THAN NATHAN MACKINNON?

Making a huge change to the defense when that (well, that and the Devils having AHL goalies) got the team to the conference finals this year and has been the cornerstone of their success the past half decade is....well, if nothing else, interesting.
Not sure it's a "huge change" yet though. If EK happens and both Skjei/Pesce go, yes huge change, but that still seems highly unlikely to me. We've known for a while that we aren't likely to keep both Skjei and Pesce long term so adding Orlov and moving one of those isn't exactly unexpected or a huge change. Plus with how forward thinking this front office is and how good our D has been with many different players since 2018, I think the moves so far make a ton of sense. Orlov upgrade and bridge to Nikishin and Slavin's next contract. Trading Skjei (or poss. Pesce) can help bring more forward/scoring upgrades. Could still see Pesce being extended and viewed as a core D man too but we'll see.

If we trade one of Skjei or Pesce for someone like Lindholm and the other one for futures, I would call the offseason a raging success, and we don't even need to extend Lindholm. An elite own-rental at 2C to cover the big contention year is picture-perfect.

Okay, so I see we kept the same goalies, spent $8 million on a defenseman (for some reason), and signed a solid, if uninteresting, forward.

Gotta say, I'd much rather have spent that Orlov money on Duchene or Tarasenko.

Have we seen the best of Svechnikov yet? A step in his development would answer the big question about this roster.
No but I'm not sure we will see it here under Rod. He could be a 45 goal 100 point guy in a looser offensive system. But I do think we'll see him get to 35 goals and ppg at some point, hopefully next year but coming off injury may take a bit longer.

Says a guy named BLUELINE Bomber…

Preferences aside, anyone can see the glaring problem at forward and the abundance of talent at defense. I'd say signing Orlov means we're trading a D for forward help, but we've seen something like that fall through in the past, and then we're stuck with too many D.

Haha. We convince the top UFA defender to come to Carolina, we do the same with a hard nosed forward (exactly what we need) yet there is still bitching and moaning. I love this board.

why? he's coming off a major injury and is locked in for 7 more years regardless. He's a core piece here and a slow start next year wouldn't surprise me or worry me at all. Jarvis/Necas are the 2 with somewhat "make or break" seasons for us as I suspect we'll have to choose which one to pay.

By make or break I mean i think we find out if this is what he is or if he has another level.

I think it's not so much board as it is one or two. I for one like the moves so far. I've always like Bunting. Maybe that's because he was one of my favorite DFS plays last year but there's a reason I made money with him in my lineup.
