Wow.

I mean, great job by SJS. And it makes sense that PIT is doing everything they can to give Sid one or two more shots at a Cup, but wow. That's a lot to give up for a relatively slim chance.
Suspiciously great, if Canes were the other trade candidate. I mean, what was the Canes offer to even keep the talks up?

Lol EK due $40M from the Pens over the next 4 years what a dumb trade for them. He’s not going to move the needle much for them, maybe get them into the playoffs again but I still doubt they even win a series

I mean, in a way they've got no choice. Sid is 35, Geno is 37, and after them, the deluge. Two years of "contention" and then many years of rebuild either way. Might as well do everything possible to win now, and it's certainly arguable that a Norris winner could move the needle more than we think.

I still think they're still the fourth best team in the Metro at best -- but maybe this gives them a chance.

This does also give them a superstar to build around after Sid and Geno retire, which ain't nothing.

Have already read some speculatation that the Habs may look to offload Petry at 50% (~$2.3M) prior to the start of the season and he has an extra year. I wonder if that affects teams possibly interested in Pesce. Maybe it doesn’t…

Hopefully this deal finally being done serves as the laxative to finally start other moves flowing…

Let it flow…like lava

Meh, 33 with an injury history and a lot of miles? At least it's only for 4 years. If they get lucky, he'll be good for that whole contact; if they get unlucky, he'll be good for maybe half of it. They really only need him for the next two.

Pitt has a lot of guys on their roster who are due to have their production sharply decline over the next couple years which will absolutely destroy their chances of competing if that happens.

Man that could get ugly in a hurry down there. Reminds me a lot of the Mets loading up this year only to have the geriatric core absolutely implode

Pesce/Teravainen/2024 1st probably beats that, the issue is Carolina would want more than 1.5 mil in retention. As yall have noted Pittsburgh is thinking in a 2-3 year window, if that, while Carolina is thinking in the long game with an Aho/Svechnikov combo for the next decade.

Grier was never going to get anything commensurate to a 100 point Norris winner, but for a rebuilding team it isn't too bad.

Every NHLer has an injury history. And non-physical defensemen tend to age pretty well.

Last year he played 82 games. In the four seasons prior to that, he averaged 53 games. I mean, that's not terrible, but it's also not nothing. It's a significant risk, especially given that their top 3 players are all in the same boat. Having all three fully healthy for a playoff run seems unlikely.

Yes, but Karsson has one of the before-and-after kind.

On which note... Penguins, then.

Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson spoke out on Friday about the gruesome left Achilles injury he suffered against the Pittsburgh Penguins last week. He essentially implied that Penguins forward Matt Cooke knew what he was doing when he jammed his skate into him—then backtracked slightly.

Which is another way of saying he once had a really bad injury that he's now fully recovered from.

The Karlsson trade made WAY more sense for Pittsburgh than Carolina because approximately a quarter of their roster is made up of bad contracts, but at the same time, I'm glad that the Canes got in on the sweepstakes, because it likely kept the package that Pittsburgh had to give up from being just a pure salary dump. Dubas IMO did a good job, however, in the sense that this trade made a shitload of some of the worst Hextall nonsense on that roster go poof into the wind.

Can’t say that seems like the best idea for the penguins but what do I know. Seems like that makes them even more top heavy, but then that top is pretty dang heavy if Crosby malkin letang and karlsson can all stay healthy at the same time

Getting DeAngelo for free essentially (either by trade or the eventual ufa signing) always made much more sense than Karlsson.

The term on Karlsson is scary.
Yeah, this. Just looking at points.

KarlssonDeAngelo
2022-202325G, 101P (1.23 PPG)11G, 42P (.6 PPG)
2021-202210G, 35P (0.7 PPG)10G, 51P (0.80 PPG)
2020-20218G, 22P (0.42 PPG)only played 6 games
2019-20206G, 40P (0.77 PPG)15G, 53P (0.78 PPG)

Given that Karlsson is 33 and DeAngelo is 27, Tony is a safer bet to be healthy and keep up his production for a while. Karlsson cost assets to acquire and costs $10M, literally 6 times TDA's salary.

For sure, Karlsson has the higher peak. But if you compare recent history, he only had a higher peak one year. Given that he's older, signed for longer, signed for 6x the price, I think DeAngelo is the better play for Carolina. For sure he's 1000x less risky.

Would it be surprising if TDA has a better season next year than Karlsson?

Here’s a curveball prediction: Pesce extension and Skjei trade to come in the next few weeks.

If Pesce extends, the Canes don't have to give up a damned thing unless they can actually get something worthwhile for Skjei (a good forward). I still think that Pesce is the better trade candidate if they want to get a larger return, but making a trade like that will require a lot of guts and faith that some combination of Chatfield/TDA can capably replace his RHD minutes. For a true contender like the Canes, that's a significant risk.
