Why do people just assume Armstrong can trade Scandella on a whim? This isnt “I dream of Genie”. You have to have a trade partner.
seattle or phoenix would take him. does scandella have a limited NTC?

Both Seattle and Pheonix are more interested in acquiring picks and prospects than taking on salary cap dumps, plus they're likely two destinations that he has on his no trade list

The Blues couldn’t make 2 years at 4.75 work? That’s all it took?

Tough to see 2 x 4.75 and be happy we lost out on Perron, but I have an emotional pull for a guy that came back to us multiple times and then won a Cup. I get we don’t operate on emotion, but I think it’s ok to think the sentimental elements are substantial enough to have paid him that.

Strickland reported on 590 today that prior to this past season, Perron was offered a one year extension at four million (extending his the current contract by one year) and he declined.

Apparently, the Blues have been/were looking at one year with him for awhile.

Makes sense knowing they'd want to work out extensions for Thomas, Kyrou, and O'Reilly prior to the 2023-24 season.

I too am surprised by how this played out and sad to see DP57 leave. Probably will want to wretch the first time we see him wearing that red winged Wheel. Won’t miss the stupid offensive zone penalties that Perron probably leads the League in but this team will miss that wicked shot and his creativity, hard nosed style and leadership Big time. Either the Front Office is worried about his concussions in the past or they are working on something bigger in my opinion. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Sorry guys I am still a little bit in shock. I definitely didn’t see that one coming.

I wasn’t able to read the entire Athletic paywall story, but JR is now reporting that prior to this past season, Perron was offered a TWO year extension at four million per year (extending his the current contract by two years) and he declined.

way i see it is they want to clear cap space to make sure they have money available to resign kyrou and then go after tkachuk.

The more info coming out the more weird the Perron thing becomes.
Obviously Perron was confident and willing to gamble on himself to get a bigger payday. Theoretically, he was right to do it and proved his abilities, but when it came to the Blues, the music stopped and he was without a chair (or least the chair he was hoping for with the Blues).

Classic bird in the hand vs. in the bush situation.

And when you factor in that we kept letting him go and he kept coming back, the whole relationship is kind of weird. Not sure what to make of it, but for whatever reason it just seems like one of those players that management was never comfortable fully committing to. You would think it would be the opposite given what we know about him as a teammate and his love for the game, but I don't know, I guess it was just not meant to work out for him to be one of those Blues lifers.

This is at least how I'm going to view it to try to make sense of it and cope.

It just feels like a situation where neither party actually sat down and thought about it thinking it was a surefire thing, and when they finally got to talking they realized it wasn't a possible thing.

As we look at cap going forward, club obviously is concerned about 2023-24 and how things will fit. They also clearly want to create opportunities for neighbors (and Bolduc after). I don’t think we let him go over couple hundred grand. I think we decided we had to let him go to make it all work. Sucks. Love Perron, but more I read behind the scenes and more you parse DA comments he wasn’t going to do deal with Perron unless he moved out other pieces and he didn’t get answers he maybe wanted on those pieces.

What baffles me is Perron only got 4.75 AAV. He probably could’ve got more once Gaudreau signed.

Edit: Palat got a 6 mil AAV. I think Perron could’ve got that on a 2 year deal

Interesting. If that's true I wouldn't think 470k per year would've been much a huge roadblock to getting a deal done.

Most likely Scandella destination is Anaheim, they need about $10 million to get above the floor and only have 4 D men under contract with one minimum RFA. Though I'm sure they have plenty of suitors right now and want a high price.

Scandella has a 7 team NTC, but Blues have leverage in the form of being able to play Mikkola and Perunovich instead, and tanking his future worth while denying his ability to compete. He could go to Anaheim and play 20 minutes a night while setting himself up for a future payday if he wants it.

There's certainly worse destinations to go than Anaheim and they're a rising team with a young core, that was in the playoff picture for half of the season.

And the Scandella cap hit should not hurt them next year, either. But they know this, and probably want a pound of flesh at this point in the cycle.
