Well he deserves it so not surprising feel bad though with Nurse and Bouchard eventually they will be cap strapped barring having 3-5 solid players on ELC deals.
Eventually? They always are and will be. Why do you think the offer sheets came in and were not matched?

Sure but Bouchards were almost entirely useless and came off the backs of the other two.
I give credit when it's due and Mcdrai are insanely good, Bouchard and his 10 million future cap hit along with Nurse will stifle the oilers from ever winning it all
Bouchard skated circles around non playoff player Hughes and overpaid Hronek

well ofcourse he will be

Its gonna be up to him to set the new high so then that starts a chain reaction for everyone to make more money all the way down to 13th forward and 7th dmen
The NHL salary cap and escrow system ensures the pie is fixed, the best players making more money just means the middle class gets less. The 13th forward and 7th dman will just get the minimum salaries regardless

I made that reference to edm fans going off on broberg and holloway for getting paid
Broberg and Holloway ARE overpaid, making Draisaitl the highest paid player doesn't mean he's overpaid at all. Edmonton is in no position to give out contacts to prospects based on what their potential could maybe one day be. This is not a Blues thread so post your anti-Oilers crap elsewhere

Highest paid based on what? If he wants a cup in Edmonton, he better be willing to take a hometown discount.

hometown discount? I‘ll take „less again“ on my next contract, just like the best #29 in the league did!

Swayman must be brainwashed here. The CBA splits the dollars between players and owners clearly. Unless he only cares about his goalie peers and dont want money to go to the skaters.
I think that Swayman wants elite players to be paid like other elite players. He doesn't want goalies to be discounted like RB in football because they are replaceable. The 50% hrr split isn't really applicable here. If he is a top 3 goalie who is just entering his prime, I can see him wanting to be paid market rate. The fact that if he gets more escrow goes up a little isn't relevant.

But if the market treats goalies like RBs thats what they are worth. Goalies are volatile so why shouldnt they be discounted. I just dont really see him trying to get the most money he can as anymore than that. Setting benchmarks blah blah. I dont think he cares nor should he care.

I think somewhere around what Mackinnon is making should be the ceiling for Draisaitl. Mackinnon is a shade better than him, but the cap is slightly higher now.

If you think they are now then I guess you haven't considered how worse it's gonna get. I also meant eventually as in when Bouchard gets his big deal as well. As per why they didn't match both players were worth no way near what they got. Was smart decision walking away.

Some where down the road someone will talk about how letting go of Broberg and Holloway killed us, but that is not true. Letting Drai go would kill us so pay him instead and mix it up with Cheap older veterans that want a chance to win with McDrai. We all see the decade of darkness coming after those runs but Holloway and Broberg won't help that enough to matter.

Pay the man. It's that simple.

That contract won't close the window, not finding a way of getting rid of Nurse's might make it abit harder to keep that window open. Oilers need a legit 1D and a Netminder that can carry when the going gets tough.

For goalie I don't mind trying to hit on a deadline goalie / Skinner

You’re not wrong, it was quite the point of contention with them signing the high offer sheets

Oilers window is this season
This season and likely next for the prime window, even with the higher cap hits I don’t think the window will close. It’ll just be significantly harder to achieve. A team with McDavid would still be hard to bet against if they can get the right cheap depth
