I had Carlsson ahead of Fantilli in my final ranks. I know most didn't, but he's a gem. Fantilli plays like a fourth line grinder anyways. For all the doubters out there, I can promise you Carlsson will give you hope.

disappointed with the pick obviously, but don't think Carlsson will be a bust or anything; skeptical he'll be a franchise center. i hope he ends up playing in the nhl, but im guessing Verbeek will want him to play in the SHL for another season.

I think Barkov is a great comparable from the minimal research I’ve done on Carlsson. If that holds, we should be thrilled cause that is exactly what the Ducks need.

I think that's why the Ducks took him.

He's a comparable prospect to Fantilli, but he's going to provide insulation and a Euro leadership vibe ala Landeskog for the Ducks core.

I think it is a great pick.

I think he stays in SHL…. My guess (and just judging off yzermen style)… verbeek wants to continue drafting high

I mentioned this leading up to the draft but the good thing about Carlsson is that he has a prototypical 1st line center profile. Except for his shot he has all the tools but his shot is deceptively good. Fantilli is a bit of a unicorn and I'm not sure he ends up as a center. Plays more like a winger to me. Anyway, would have been happy with either and won't lose any sleep over it tonight.

No one should be saying Carlsson was a bad pick though. He will be a legitimate star in the league for the next 12-15 years.

A lot gets mentioned about the hockey IQ but I don’t think we pause to think about how important it is.

Preface I am NOT comparing Carlsson to Gretzky BUT what made Gretzky so great was his ability to see the play before it happened, find soft spots on the ice and create a play from that either as the distributor or the benefactor. Carlsson has that and I think as he physically matures, the sky will be the limit. Awesome pick.

Great call. Had him at #2 all year, as did much of the Habs board.

People underestimate the these big, pass-first players and their ability to lean on their stick with all that mass and absolutely rip the puck. No one thought Barkov would be pacing for 40 every year nor Draisaitl 50+.

They grow up always being the best distributor and puck carriers on their teams, then get to the NHL and get to play with elite playmakers in their own right in Huberdeau/McDavid and for the first time actually get to make use of their IQ, strength and off-puck movement to become massive scoring threats.

Carlsson will score goals in this league on top of being the incredible playmaker and possession monster he already is.

He’s definitely staying in the SHL no matter how amazing he looks. Sadly it’s gonna be another insufferable season. We need to focus on other sports for another year… I don’t recommend watching too many ducks unless you want to be frustrated every time.

I don’t know that he’s gonna stay in Sweden this year. If they see him as a center then it’s pretty up in the air if he’d play that if he goes back and they have no control. Makes a lot of sense to bring him over, at least initially.

I've had all day to settle down with the disappointment that they didn't pick my preferred guy but I liked Carlsson for Anaheim too. I think he's going to be a stud first liner.

I still lament that they didn't take a chance on the guy with the higher ceiling but it doesn't hurt to take the guy with the higher floor either.

it clearly wasn't that close. a lot like the 2012 draft the public perception was a lot different than the league's. reminds me of how a couple teams had Lindholm very high - i know Bryan Murray and the Sens wanted him badly.

But this is what bothers me. I know my opinions don't have the same value as professionals but I really hate hearing that the world championships was what put Carlsson over the top or at least I hope it's not as surface level as Carlsson played first line center for a top hockey nation and had more points.

It's been implied that carlsson is more comfortable staying over one more year, but I don't know if that's been said in passing or with real intent.

I hate that reasoning. Not the right tournament to judge after. But so all the scouts unanimously voted for him... does this ever happens? Because there's a lot of scouts.
I think maybe the thought was that getting to see him play C at the WC (as opposed to W all season long) confirmed what they believed all along, that he definitely could play the position in the NHL.

Sportsnet did a brief interview with PV and asked if he would come over here next year. PV was very evasive and basically said he didn't know. It definitely wasn't a denial. I would think there will be some conversations with everybody involved as well as seeing him at rookie camp and then a decision will be made. But I agree, given they see him as a C, they probably prefer him over here unless they feel confident he would play C in Sweden.

Carlsson should probably come to training camp (if he signs) and get acclimated to the NHL lifestyle and practices. If he makes the team then so be it but if he doesn't I'd rather see him playing in Sweden for one more year.

I guess he said he doesn’t expect to be in the NHL next year, I missed that, so that might settle that. Or he’s just being humble, I think Lindholm and Lundestrom might’ve said similar. Either way I don’t mind if he goes back but I hope he doesn’t go back to play the wing; if that’s the case I’d rather he go play in San Diego.

Yeah I did see that, but I dunno if that’s Verbeek just being awkward, I didn’t get much out of that. Like no matter what you’re not gonna commit to that sort of thing right now, but I do wonder after developmental camp what the thoughts are.
