So much this. The pre-draft commentary on his skills from the so-called experts was laughably incorrect. He's fast, he's tough, he's smart, he routinely takes the puck away, and he can finish.

Elite Prospects was worse. Most of them, Mitch Brown being the head cheerleader, fell in love with the visceral visual play and didn't pay attn to their own metrics. The guy who tracked Carlsson, Lassi Alanen, was high on Carlsson, but his voice didn't come through strong enough in their group debates on YouTube.

Here are their rating charts:

I think it's pretty clear that the NA scouting community heavily favors Canadian kids and doesn't get enough exposure to Europeans outside of big tournaments. It's pretty clear they missed the mark on Carlsson pre-draft. Looking back though, there were some people around the draft who were very, very high on Carlsson. Like best player in the draft high on him.
I’m not even sure if that’s true. On the score cards it says they scouted Leo in 20 games and Fantilli in 7.

Scouting isn’t an exact science. I think Fantilli’s NCAA production was just too eye popping.

I wasn't really serious about the Ducks releasing Leo, that ship sailed a long time ago. It would just have been nice to see him crush the WJHC.

Swedes tend to mature later compared with other countries and instead grow during their first seasons - see Sedins, Hedman etc. So Leo is more of an outlier. And had he remained in SHL like he was meant to he would have been in.

Maybe Leo is maturing later and this is before he gets good :sarcasm:

I could totally be wrong. That said, the score card for Leo was from a European scout not a NA scout, so I don't think it necessarily contradicts the idea that NA scouts favor their own and don't necessarily get enough exposure to European prospects. At the same time, they rank them and comment on them pre-draft like they're just as familiar with the European kids as they are with the NA kids. It creates the illusion that guys like Pronman and Wheeler are fully familiar with all of the prospects and able to accurately rank them all as a group.

Ridiculous. An average skater with a below average shot. I don't understand Pronman.

I love that he didn't just shrink away and was punching back at whatshisface last night. MacDermid.
"His only drawback is a lack of true separation speed. I’ve seen worse feet on a 6-foot-3 guy, but he won’t be turning NHL defensemen around."

I'm willing to admit that I took all of these NA scouting opinions as well-informed and when I watched Carlsson at the WC, in hindsight, I think it colored my opinion of what I was watching. I DO think his acceleration has improved some, but watching him in the NHL this season, his skating is way better than he was given credit for and it couldn't have magically changed that drastically over one summer.

First i thought "Damn Fantilli is lighting it up, good for him". Then i started to wonder about how many points Calsson will have after 28 games. I hope i dont jinx anything now. If Carlsson gets no points now in the next ten games, its my fault.

The guy makes plays nobody else in our lineup can make. A lot of pressure to put on the kid but if this team ever wants to leave mediocrity, he will have to have a big part in it.

Nice little article on Leo from EP Rinkside
And Carlsson has put in heavy work on the days he’s been scratched.

On those days he’ll typically have a two-hour workout before morning skate, will take part in the morning skate, and then have an additional 45 minutes of ice time with an assistant coach. He’ll typically have another workout right before the game and then watch from the press box.

“With the (NHL) schedule, you really don’t have time to work out, you can't work out and have time to recover properly,” Carlsson said. “So I’ve been able to do that, and start getting stronger.”

If I see another person say they are resting him because he is too tired to play every night I'm gonna lose my shit.

I think Zegras can make those plays, it's just been so long we have forgotten he can do it.
Agreed, I think the difference is carlsson has better judgement(more mature game) on when to make these plays, where zegras tends to try to force those plays too often

They both make incredible plays in different ways. Leo always manages to hold the puck longer than I expect and makes something crazy happen whereas Zegras makes things happen out of nothing.
