Would be surprised if he plays in Pittsburgh. Rest him up for the return home
Only if injured. There are only 2 games next week total, Monday and Wednesday, then they play Sunday Tuesday Friday the week after. I’d say sitting Vegas Sunday the 5th makes the most sense if they want large blocks of time for workouts as that would give him a 6 day span of no games.

He’s supposed to play 2 games a week. There are only 2 games next week. I’m not getting why people keep wanting to sit him a game next week.

Obviously very early and limited sample size caveats apply here, the Ducks made the right choice over Fantilli. His size and speed combination is crazy to see and he's still growing into his body. With his elite passing, vision, and IQ, he reminds me of Joe Thornton. Not saying Leo is going to be the next Joe Thornton, but his game reminds me of him. Fantilli is the better player right now, but in a few seasons, Carlson will be the better player.

You're looking at calendar weeks, though. For all we know, it might be 2 games in a 7-day span. So if he plays Monday, he will have played 3x in a 5-day span. Not sure if they want that.

I honestly have no idea, but it would make sense if that were the case.

True, but even if they started the “week” on the Saturday of his first game, it would make sense to play him in Pittsburgh then sit him at home vs Arizona, because that gives a larger block of time to do workouts.

I think as a rule of thumb 3 games in a row for him would be surprising. We have no idea how they define “week” I’m just gonna say that him being on the ice in Pittsburgh would surprise me a lot and then playing on Wednesday after playing in Pittsburgh would be incredibly surprising

He has that size where he kinda just laces through other players like a snowplow. Not even like he’s trying to move guys out of the way.

I know the Swedish comparisons are tiring but Sundin certainly was a guy who did that. I think Leo is more of a passer than Mats though.

That's a pretty good comparison. Don't think Leo is a scorer like Sundin was.

I don't trust management because "they said so".
It’s very common knowledge that building strength and power needs a combination of intense workouts and substantial rest, which you cannot do in an nhl schedule. This isn’t even debated. From a physical standpoint this is clearly in the proven science category. This is why you see such run down guys in the nhl playoffs because they play so much they can’t keep building their bodies. It’s also why the nba doesn’t play superstars every night.

Yup.

Think of it as an NCAA schedule. They play two games on the weekend and then the next four to five days off. This set structure is optimally beneficial for body building (strength and stamina), which includes rest periods. Rest period is what many are missing in this load mgmt equation for body building.

Oct 28th is the 2nd game played. If they're following the NCAA model, which specifically requires rest periods, then Carlsson won't play against Pitt (Oct 30th) or Arizona (Nov 1). In fact, next week could be spent on body training and rest. That would be beneficial considering his hip hit the post hard in today's game.

Fully expect him the be out tomorrow, and return for Wednesday’s home game. That makes sense with not only Verbeek’s plan but a marketing one to get more casual fans to the game Wednesday.

It's more a debate of it's better for him to get more reps in or focus on the strength and conditioning.

Or you could do both, which is the NCAA schedule. NCAA schedule is two games played and then four to five days off.

Talented NCAA kids don't suffer. Zegras was a one-and-done NCAA prospect. McTavish only played 24 games in his D+0 season, which he spent several months just working out until Feb to be able to play in the 2nd tier Swiss league b/c the OHL never opened up due to COVID. He played 17 games in the NL-B (13 reg, 4 playoffs) before going to the WJC-18. His play didn't suffer at the WJC-18.

I do remember having a discussion during the summer in this forum about how LaCombe having developed four years at the NCAA level, 140 NCAA games, would be at equal level or better level than Drysdale, despite Drysdale having played 113 NHL games, essentially a year and a quarter of an NHL season. Many fans don't think highly of the NCAA program b/c they play the fewest games out of any league. The 2021 draft had four out of the top-5 picks were all NCAA prospects, and all from the same school, Michigan.

Agreed, but you have to also consider you are comparing games vs S&C, film study, skills training, better nutrition and sleep (no flying). I think they're both totally valuable but I would guess that an optimal development protocol would be less games and more practice and off-ice work. This is a great time for Leo to learn how to be a pro, and learning how to be a pro is mostly preparation outside of games.

Is him playing last night an indication they aren't sticking with the management plan anymore?

I doubt it. I think they'll probably stick somewhat closely to the 2 games/week, but as long as there's at least a day or two between games, he's an option to play. This wasn't a back to back.
