Maybe he takes Mctavish’s busy development route too…. Playing in a bunch of various leagues, tournament, line mates, and styles, but he looked burnt out at times with the Ducks… although that could be from all the losing…

McTavish was burnt out for a long 2021-22 season. IMO, he was burnt out around game 50 for the Ducks.

McTavish's 2022-23 schedule
  • Sept '22
    • Rookie Tournament (He played with Zegras on the PP in game 1)
    • Training camp

  • Oct - June
    • NHL - 9 games
    • AHL - 3 games
    • CHL (Petes) - 5 games
    • WJC-20 (Dec cancelled) - 2 games (Captain)
    • CHL (Bulldogs regular season) - 24 games
    • Olympics (Team Canada) - 7 games (Feb 4 - 20th)
    • CHL (Bulldogs playoffs season) - 19 games, won OHL championship
    • CHL (Memorial Cup) - 5 games; runner up (from June 20-29)

  • July 12 - 16
    • Ducks Dev Camp
      Mac didn't have to participate

  • Aug 9 - 20th
    • WJC-20 (summer makeup) - 7 games, won gold (Captain)

  • Sept '23
    • Rookie Tourney
    • Training Camp

McTavish barely got a month's rest in July. The Aug 9 - 20th schedule is only for preliminary games and beyond, not exhibition games preceding it. Also, the CHL season started later, meaning the Memorial cup started later too. The 2023 Mem cup was from May 26 - Jun 4th. The silver lining is Mac's schedule was played mostly on NA ice, the Olympics being the outlier.

Mac started his 2023 summer on April 13th. The next time Mac might suit up could be at the Rookie tourney exhibition on Sep 15 -18. If not rookie tourney, then training camp, which starts after the rookie tourney. That's about 5 months away from playing hockey!

There is a difference between Mac & Carl, Mac wasn't eligible to stay in the AHL and Carlsson has that option since he's drafted as a non-CHL player.

Plus the SHL would prioritize the team over what is best for player development.
While SD is focused on prospect development and making AHL playoffs comes 2nd.
But don’t forget that Leo is already a proven star at the SHL level. That’s why he made the WC-team. His teams’ success will be a function of his play and development. So I guess I think another year is good for him in Sweden. Hey if it worked for Foppa and the Sedins I think it’ll be good for Leo. But, really, at the end of the day the cream rises to the top anyhow.

Dont know if Leo was the best pick for Ducks but i belive it was the best place to end up for Leo. I base this on absolutly nothing.

Seeing him play on Friday makes me want him in the AHL over SHL even more. I think some of his decisions would have worked better on larger ice, so the sooner he can adjust to the smaller ice the better.
Exactly my thoughts, I think he was forcing passes that usually work on big ice. Just needs some adjustment time on small ice and he’ll be awesome.

I would give him a few more games on small ice before determine anything. He might be a fast learner and better with better players. I guess pure snipers dominate easier with lesser players , playmakers with better players.

I think Carlsson's shot might have been slept on a bit by scouts or not played up enough. it seems to be very accurate with a quick release. seems to be able to get it off in tight quarters as well. The two things that have stood out to me that i wasn't expecting from him are his above-average speed and his shot. He seems to be faster than Zegras already.

I don't even think he needs a tremendous amount of adjustment. I agree that some of his forced passes looked to be a bit of a variance from a situation he'd face on bigger Euro ice, but he also made a lot of really good short passes especially in tight with pressure on him. Where I noticed it more is his shot timing. I can think of at least three shot attempts from him that were disrupted by a stick in his lane.

I think once he settles into playing on a smaller rink it shouldn't be too much trouble to adapt the timing of his shot and shot selection. Or maybe that's just hopium, either way he's too close to being NHL ready right now. Going back to Sweden at this point maybe wouldn't be regressive but it wouldn't be to his benefit either. It should 100% be NHL or AHL.

I just think it's because he doesn't shoot often that they don't give Carlsson credit for his shot despite having great hands. In EP's scorecard, Carlsson doesn't shoot often, but will score on his limited chances. Leo does pass often with accuracy, but he doesn't get the first assist. That's fine because it'll lead to a big rebound, which is what happened in rookie game two with Terrance potting a rebound, iirc.

Guess that makes Carlsson more of a play driver than play finisher.

Definitely more of a play driver than a finisher.

Moves really well and is very shifty for a bigger guy. Sky is truly the limit for him

When Carlsson curls around to pickup speed, he just glides right by players and weaves at the same time. While doing all that, his brain is scanning on where to go next or who to pass the puck to next. He is sometimes too much like Getzy in that he loves to pass the puck than shoot, and, like Getzky, Carlsson's got great hands to shoot.

There is one point that Carlsson needs to improve upon is at the faceoff dot. We had Gaucher taking faceoffs on the PP over Carlsson. Carlsson will need lots of reps due to playing wing for the past two seasons. McTavish played mostly wing for two seasons too and was sent back down to the CHL for his D+1 season. Mac got a lot of reps at the faceoff dot in his D+1 season playing center in the CHL, CHL playoffs, CHL Memorial Cup, and at the WJC-20 (winter and summer editions).

If Carlsson is in the AHL this season, please, please, please put Tracey and Perreault on his line! I want to see the offensive output from this trio.

The right choice, if only because he wore dunks and didnt have a custom jacket made for draft day

Leo’s showed some good flashes at the prospect came but wow… it’s still hard to watch Bedard and Fantilli highlights… I’m just hoping Leo has more runway in development.
