Any instances throughout hockey history of players whose perception was tarnished/elevated based on things they did away from the rink?

Hurt: Brodeur (adulterer), Roy, Hasek (assault on reporter), Vanbiesbrouck (bigot), Lindros (unusually demanding/primadonna)

Helped: Mario (cancer/rescued franchise), Gretzky (no dirt despite immense visibility/model citizen/promotes game constantly/not critical), Rocket Richard, Sedins, Luongo, Subban, Theo Fleury

Who are yours?

Koivu's comeback from cancer and what he did for the community on the back of it certainly helped his legacy quite a bit, especially that enormous donation for MGH's first PET/CT scanner.

Lindros for sure. Would likely be in the HHOF by now (though he'll probably get in soon anyway).

Among current players, Patrick Kane isn't winning any fans for his off ice behavior.

How about Barrasso? I've heard stories that he wasn't the nicest guy in the world. Has that hurt his perception?

I don't think Brodeur's "actions" had any effect on his legacy. I certainly wouldn't have started the ennumeration with him in any case. I can think of one player whose (extra) marital affairs made him look a bit *******, but I'm not sure it's worth mentionning.

I mean, I can also think of Rob Ramage (I don't think there's been lots of effect on his legacy, though there is at least cause for it) and Rick Tocchet (same). But those guys committed some seriously reprehensible acts (Ramage more than Tocchet...).

I could certainly name other guys, but HOF is not the National Enquirer, and frankly, I'm happy with the current state of affairs.

Saku Koivu is a good example.

Teemu Selanne in the sense that he was specially nice for the fans whenever meeting them. So he gained a lot of points.

if gartner had been an orphan kicking satanist from anywhere else instead basically eastern-canadian ned flanders, would be be on the outside?

The Sedins donating 1.5 million dollars each to build a wing at the Vancouver children's hospital does it for me.

Say what you will but these are real decent guys for doing that.

3 million between them

I've rarely been as impressed by a player off the ice than I have with PK Subban.

The 10 M$ charity donation is of course absolutely huge and unexpected - but it's not even just that.

During the heated Boston/Montreal series - supposedly some fans threw out racial slurs at him. This was a very, very heated series. People label PK as having a bad attitude, or as being a troublemaker, etc...It's the perfect setting for PK to come out and say something controversial. Instead? He right away goes to the defense of the Bruins organization, say this has nothing to do with them or their fans and talks them up full of respect, and refuses to talk about the issue further. Even though i'm a big habs fan - I gained a tremendous amount of respect for PK then.

This isn't the only instance - he's impressed me so many other times. His attitude in the 2014 olympics too. Everyone in Montreal was up in arms about the Norris winner barely getting ice-time. He easily could have played it up but did absolutely nothing of the sort, quite the opposite. Was the perfect team player, always saying super supportive/positive things in the media.

So yeah - I think PK Subban is carving himself quite an amazing reputation off the ice. I hope the Habs organization/NHL would market him more - he's great for the game. Could be a tremendous ambassador.

I would have to argue that outside of hockey it's helped people to understand him and what he went through. But it seems to actually hurt him in the hockey world, in my opinion it's the only thing keeping him out of the Hall of Fame where he belongs.

Kevin Stevens and the transvestite hooker calling him a crack monster didn't help his legacy

Ed Belfours billion dollar bribe to the police didn't help him either.

Barrasso was never in cahoots with the media and it hurt him.

He was a good goalie and probably should be in the HOF, but I've heard stories about him from fans. He was a horses butt. The media got that one right. His attitude likely cost him the HOF since he'd be a bubble player already.

Can you name a team? Like the 1998 US Olympic hockey team who ended up trashing their hotel room after an embarrassing showing at Nagano.

"This is an unfortunate incident and one that we deeply regret," said David Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "We believe only a handful of individuals were involved. Nevertheless, we will work with the NHL and the NHL Players Association in an effort to determine exactly who was responsible. The actions of a few should not be constructed as representative of an entire team."

The players involved have not yet been identified, although the USOC, USA Hockey, the NHL and the Nagano Organizing Committee are investigating the incident. USOC officials will meet with NAOC officials today to arrange payment for repairs. Both the NHL and USA Hockey have offered to cover the cost of the damages, USOC Executive Director Dick Schultz said.

Team USA General Manager Lou Lamoriello told the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger that the players "should be ashamed of themselves."

"I'm upset. I'm appalled to hear something like that," he said. "I don't condone it. I can't accept it. . . . There is no reason to do anything like that. If they were disappointed, think of all the fans who were disappointed."

I don't know if the names of those who were responsible ever came out, but it's been speculated that known assclowns like Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick were involved.

Did they think they were rock stars or something? Keith Tkachuk must have thought he was Keith Moon and blew up a toilet or two.

Kevin Stevens is a great mention here.
That was a shocking incident.

East St Louis. Crack. $5 ho.
Not the normal stuff you expect to read about of NHL'ers

Barrasso was an ass to a lot of fans, the media, and especially his backups.

He's a borderline HoF guy that should probably be on the "in" side of the line, but his personality and reputation is keeping him out.

I don't think Bure was helped very much by his off-ice persona. He was kind of a Garbo type, plus he also had some dubious mobster ties.

Lanny MacDonald is the definition of a borderline HHOF guy who got into the HHOF and has a huge legacy because he was one of the nicest/most loveable guys in NHL history.

Tom Barrasso would be a similar borderline HHOFer with the opposite effect happening because he was a total a-hole.
