Thank you Matthews.
I wouldn’t make a habit though of going down 2-0 in playoff games and expecting a Matthews hat trick. That spells doom.
Gotta improve that D and goaltending fast.

Felt like Kampf only had the 1 shift in that last 7 or so minutes oddly enough

it was always going to be a bit of a sloppy win to break this slide. At this point we cannot be choosing how we win. We just need points.

34 won us that game. That's what he is paid to do, and thank god he was able to do that for us yesterday. Very clear that we are lacking the swagger that truly competitive teams have. So hopefully this win kick starts something positive

I don't get what the forwards are supposed to do differently on that play.

Other teams player takes a weak shot from behind the net, Jones misplays it but pretends he has the puck. Player taps it in while Jones is pretending to have the puck.

I don't think anyone expects their goalie to pretend to have the puck when he doesn't.

Watch Bertuzzi starting at 08:41. He failed to get the puck out of the zone. That's what needs to be done better. He is a train wreck under pressure. Tavares, Nylander and Bertuzzi doing more watching than engaging after that. How did the puck get into the Leaf zone before 08:41 in the clip? Can't just blame the goalie.

Jones messed up big time too but he's a 3rd stringer and hardly getting paid. The high priced forwards on the ice need to play better defensively long before Jones needs to stop it. As a line they are too slow going from offence to defense and/or too uncommitted or just too tired.
Same shot 2 games in a row.

Yeah, I know it has been said, including by me, but they don't need a superstar goaltender, they just need an average goaltender that can make stops NHL goaltenders make all the time.

Give them a top 10 goaltender and they're probably a favorite.

Matty is a beast.

I thought the Tavares line was poor in the D zone (too much floating) , and Lilly didn't have the best reads, though Gio isn't helping the situation.

I like that Matthews guy, I'm sure they'll be some sort of criticism directed towards him after this game. Even though he doesn't deserve it.

I could take or leave the rest of the team though.

That Tavares/Bertuzzi/Nylander line was pretty awful the entire 60 minutes. And Tavares may finally be hitting the wall.

Leafs are dreadfully generous with the puck at their own blueline.

Drives me more bonkers than my normal bonkers.

I'd like to give credit where credit is due, and Liljegren has been playing pretty well but what a brainfart.

It's hard to remember he's only played over 2 seasons of NHL games. He's been around so long it seems like he's a veteran. He's the youngest defenseman on the team. Interestingly, Benoit and Timmins are a day apart in age, and about 6 months older than Liljegren.

There are only about 10 games difference between Benoit and Liljegren.

It could be the Leafs could have a couple of good defenders there in a year or so.

Tavares needs his own third line.

Wonder if something like this would work?
Bertuzzi-Tavares-McMann

Players out to end the game:

Last Shift
marner
Benoit
Jarnkrok
McCabe
Tavares

2nd. Last Shift - Drew Penalty
Nylander
Brodie
Matthews
Rielly
marner

On the bench for last part of game:
Player ...... TOI
Domi - 10:31
Knies - 10:36
Holmberg - 11:25
Liljegren - 13:58 - Took brainfart penalty
Giordano - 14:38
McMann - 07:11

Played well.

Matthews was outstanding.

But that glove hand pass rule is weak. No way does Coleman intend to pass the puck to a teammate. It deflected off his outstretched hand. Leafs benefited from a rule that shouldn't be a rule. But I'll take it.
Like a lot of them, the rule per se is fine: you can't pass the puck with your hand. It's when you get to the extreme application that it becomes strange.

You're not allowed to enter the zone before the puck. But is a player who never got involved in the play being one millimeter over the line 30 seconds before a goal is scored the intent of the offside rule?

Kudos to whoever saw it, and yes, we got off on a technicality, but the rule is good.

The goaltending will improve on its own once Woll is back. The defense....well, that is a different story. How did you like Tanev in his Leafs audition last night, because that's probably what we are getting.
I was hoping to see if Woll could be a legit #1 this year, so hopefully he comes back and plays pain free, performs well, and doesn’t require surgery in the off-season.
Tanev looks slow enough to play on the Leafs blue line.

Tavares with a nice block to help preserve the win.

Tavares can't get open anymore, or perhaps he's just a little overplayed?

Perhaps he can't play 18+ minutes a night at his age?
