Ehh I agree except Dermott was garbage, just IMO.

-His break passes were really spotty coughing up possession needlessly over and over.
-The announcers were all praising Marner for a back check which he only had to make because Dermott lost his positioning and his man. Marner screamed an F bomb after, it coulda been regarding something else but I thought it was due to Dermott's play.
-Dermott's odd pass to Matthews directly cause a goal like 1.5 seconds later. I know people are knocking Matthews on it and they aren't entirely wrong... but the only play for him to make there is to press it into the boards and buy some time. If that was the outcome Dermott wanted he should have just done it himself instead of dishing it to someone else to do it in the same spot a quarter second later. I'm pretty sure that's why it caught Matthews off guard, but Matthews was also not very impressive tonight so who knows.
-Pretty sure I've seen Matthews frustrated over a dermott play multiple times, but of course it could be about other things and I'm misattributing it.

I just assumed Dermott got benched. Any word if it was benching or injury?

Not the most convincing of wins, but a win all the same...and a winning streak to boot! Good to see Marner, Muzzin and Tavares pot goals. Happy to have Mrazek pick up his first win here too.

The boys controlled the majority of the game. Certainly deserved the win and skated really well.

Large parts of this game yes. They were up 33 shots to 19 at one point. They had double the scoring chances. They had 4 more minutes of puck possession in the offensive zone. The 3rd period was not great though, despite scoring a couple goals. They had some bad bad giveaways.

Can we not do this negativity baloney and pretend like they didn't have a good game just because it wasn't 10-0.

Provide your thoughts on the game if you disagree.

I put no stock in perimeter shots or "advanced stats". What I saw was a pretty evenly matched back and forth game. Maybe, and it's a maybe, one Leafs (Tavares) line "dominated" but that's not indicative of the game as a whole.

Probably a benching. He wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad per say. Let’s use holl as a barometer, everyone was above that level imo. I still would’ve played him but moved him down or something or just played him less, but not completely benched him, this game was 5-2 with average goaltending


Also, holl better not be coming in for him.

Matthews line wasn’t good tonight but they weren’t bad either. They needed to create more, but they didn’t really give up much of anything either.

Of our top guys Matthews was on the ice for least amount of goals against. So there’s nothing to this idea we’d have been in OT if he played in the final 2 mins

Should of been 6-2 not 5-4. Need better goaltending than that. D overall was good with a few stupid pinches but overall they looked solid. The speed was much better too. Plenty of guys got big goals tonight. Happy to see JT get going and Marner seems to be turning the corner. Just need Papi to get there but it's coming. Back to 500. Big week this week.

Matthews played like a weenie and deserved to get sat. If I didn't know any better I'd swear his has pouting about not playing with Mitch.

They kinda did nothing on the ice. Remember Aberg? Malgin? Gauthier? When those guys were on the ice, nothing happened, like not in a positive way, but not really in a negative way either. Matthews and nylander were exactly that, for the most part, excluding like two Matthews rushes, both of them just went through the motions. Nylanders forecheck had less speed and intensity. Matthews finish and off puck play was atrocious. With the way mrazek was playing, I wouldn’t be surprised that it had gone to overtime had they been out. So in that sense, I guess it isn’t just that line and Matthews that the idea of overtime came up

It doesn’t matter. 11m isn’t for just working hard, it’s for not making mistakes and also converting. Matthews did neither, he tried and still gave a goal up. He wasn’t good enough for this game. Marners been benched, nylander has been too, and so has Tavares. It’s not hard, if you aren’t playing well, you should be benched. Doesn’t matter of the name

It's called closing out a game. Matthews gets the last few mins when we're down, not when we're leading...

Matthews is the best defensive forward on the team so that’d be a no to that. He wasn’t really going tonight though so I have little issue with leaning on the line that was instead

Matthews problems have spanned 5 or 6 games now, playing him 3 minutes more wasn’t gonna change anything. Especially with the way his line played. They need to regroup and come back more feisty next game also with more intensity.

As for coaching, I doubt keefe was gonna do much if he had played, he’d just give him his normal shifts, instead of double shifting him or nylander with Tavares, or with Spezza.

We don’t know how Matthews’ wrist is and the fact that he couldn’t use it for 6 weeks after the surgery and probably a few weeks before it, plus the fact that he missed all of training camp.......is the reason he has had such a slow start.
