Post-Game Talk: Leafs win 4-3 against Rangers

Is marner suffering something?

Looked slow reacting tonight.

Seemed to be chasing the play.

TOI - less than 18 minutes, so maybe something?
The fact that he isn't a very good overall hockey player who is lazy and entitled.
He is always slow reacting, he refuses to skate or be in a position where he needs to be in order to make a play.
He chases the play because his hockey IQ is below average and hasn't skated in a season and a half.
He less the plays the better off the team is.

$11M winger who can't put the puck in the back of the net and is looking for a a raise, absolute joke the way he played tonight. Not a single positive thing he did to help the Leafs win a hockey game.

Knies is one of three players this season to have 25+ goals and 150+ hits. The other two? Brady Tkachuk and Tom Wilson. Pretty good company
Kids going to be a beast, hopefully we can lock him up long term. I’m okay with an 8 year deal in the 7-7.5 million range. Might be a bit expensive next year but it’ll be worth it come year 2 and on.

Maybe load management? He had a 30m game around now last year and fell flat in the playoffs.

If not I would go with performance anxiety. He really is in a dicey position with his contract, lots of pressure and not everyone can get away with this stuff. Wouldn't be the first time someone overvalued themselves, got called out and became a contract loser.

I noticed something in his skating against Florida but didn’t mention it to avoid riling up anyone.
Thinking it’s his ankle again, he’s skating like he did last playoff.

The guy is about to be making over 12 million a year, don’t think he’s a contract loser hahaha

I will never see JT like a captain. He has been great though and was a better captain than AM is showing now. That being said Captain's cut their teeth in the playoffs so I hope AM ups his game and passion to lead and win.

JT is twice as good as last season as well. I thought he was done, not gonna lie.
What if tge speculation that Matthews is going to need surgery this offseason is true? Would that make him more captain like?

Not a negative reflection of Knies in any way shape or form, but I think this would be the wrong approach. I’d love to lock him up long term as well in a perfect world, but we need to protect every bit of our cap space possible over the next 3 seasons, so I’d be looking to bridge him somewhere in the 5s. Since he would still be an RFA on the other side, we’re better going short imo.

If I'm his agent, I accept nothing but a short bridge deal. This kid could really take advantage of a rising cap in three years.

Yup, both player and team will want a short-term deal.

I think a bridge deal should fit the best interest of both sides. No doubt we will pay for it in the long run, but the contention window is most important right now
Deal with the future when it comes. If gaining salary flexibility over the next 3 years means that you have to pay Knies more later, so be it. This team has a chance to win multiple Cups over the next 3-4 years with the way the rest of the league is trending.

Bridge deal is the way to go unless he’s willing to do a deal similar to what Byfield took on a 5 year deal

Hello, @MilkofthePoppy

Was that a good enough win against a desperate rangers team trying to make the playoffs? Or does that one not count either.

Anyways, good performance on a 2nd half of a back to back, only goal that pissed me off was the 2nd one from the Rangers. 44 had time to make a play, and decided throwing the puck back from where he got it from was the smart play...

That 2nd line has to remain together. It's the best LW option for it by far.

We need to find a place for Laughton.

I think Robertson has firmly asserted himself in the lineup. Has really grown on me.

I expected more from a desperate Rangers team and less from a Leafs team that just beat a very good Colorado team. Losing to two teams playing B2B when you need every point sealed their fate. From Penthouse to Outhouse in a year.

The Rangers look so much like those Leafs teams that would be cruising towards the playoffs and then promptly fall off a cliff. They look...defeated. You could call that game midway through the first period last night simply by watching the Rangers.

As game speed picks up as season playoff spots and seeding are up for grabs Mitch will become less impactful to our offence .. but he is still a very important player and his 2 way game is critical for us in playoffs .. what he needs to make sure is he does not resort to throw away passes which turn into chances for our opponents .. his history of overtrying to make creative offensive plays goes back to when he was a kid .. bottom line his stride length really impacts him in fast playoff games where time and space on puck is severely limited .. bottom line is he and Matty together won't make a good playoff pairing as foot speed becomes a bigger issue .. Domi and Knies is a perfect playoff line for Matty .. JT with Mitch and McCann on forecheck might work as you put slower guys together

I am happy with it.
