Just an excellent professional performance against a team we should beat, and did

Special teams have improved exponentially, goaltending is solid and our best players are playing like it

Proud of the boys for that effort

I feel like we need to give some credit to Timmins for his recent play. He started the year off poorly but looks excellent now, I'm really liking him in the 3RD role

I would still like to see that spot upgrader but I have to admit he's been really good recently

His play has been basically the same all year, only people are noticing now because he is hardly ever on for goals against due to a 96.7 5v5 on-ice sv% (only Domi's is higher at 97%). As soon as that inevitably drops, regardless of his play, people will start complaining that he sucks at D again. Well, same for the whole team because right now the only player below 90% is Kampf at 88.5 (Tanev is right at 90).

It's funny what competent goaltending can do.

I read somewhere recently that Lambert is in charge of the pk now.

Was wondering what he did. I remember reading at the start of the year Savard was responsible for both special teams. Looks like he was way in over his head so they spread the responsibility around a little.

Nylander continuing to play well I might actually start to like him as a player.

That was a pathetic defensive effort by Montreal though. I noticed they don't try to ever stand up and close the gap. If they're worried about getting skated around and scored on they probably shouldn't.

It's already happening anyway.

Montreal seems to be getting worse as the year goes on. On the one hand you want to see a renewed rivalry between the teams to give a little extra meaning to these regular season games. On the other hand it's always fun to watch the Leafs lay a solid beating on the Habs like the English did the French in the Battle Of Quebec.

With the likes of Roenick getting elected the HOF comes closer to the Hall Of Very Good every year.

The single biggest difference with Matthews out is Marner is putting in an extra effort, he is making smarter plays and is shooting the puck more instead of always blowing chances by trying to get it to Matthews.
He does a lot less circling around outside of the play with Matthews out.
This is 100% proof that they need to split those 2 up

I'm not sure the advanced stats show this but I like both Matthews and Marner's game more when they aren't playing with each other.

Marner becomes more of a dual threat and isn't forcing plays towards one player and thus the offense becomes less predictable.

Matthews plays more of the traditional heavy center game where he's forechecking and dominating the puck more versus trying to find open space, so Mitch can set him up to snipe.

The Habs lack of compete level is shocking. I know they're sort of tanking but this is a terrible environment to develop young players. This is how you become Buffalo.
They aren’t tanking, that was the best they could do. Saturday night HNIC, Hall of Fame weekend, they put forth their very best effort.

I'm sure they will make deadline additions, they always do.
That’s part of the problem, the deadline decisions seldom helped. Just go with the guys that brought ya.

Another 2 PP goals without Mathews in the lineup. It will be interesting to see how this team performs on the PP when he returns. Good wing. Let's keep it rolling!
It’s going to be very interesting, either we are going on an extended roll, or a split will be coming.

Some Sunday morning reflections on the game:

Start with a Hab fan podcast. Bottom Six Minutes Eye on the Prize more like “Eye on the Trainwreck” Listening to it is like some of our GDT’s but in reverse. You’ll be glad you listened.

NHL highlights: always fun to watch Nylander make a fool of the entire Hab PK. (Including wunkerkind Lane Hutson)

LFR: typical annoying Dangle offering, but we learn that perhaps Kampf’s nickname is his actual name, “Dave” when Marner talks about the shorthanded goal.

Leafs Talk: Another podcast on the solid win with a thorough rip on how pathetic the Habs are by Bunkis and McKee.

Solid game. Nice to rack up some wins.
Glad our PP is finally scoring. Beautiful goal by Willy.
Hope the Pacioretty injury isn't too bad...

There's no question to me this is the best D we've had in years. Also, this system we're playing more resembles a sustainable model, less chaotic, maybe not as entertaining but more predictable.

I like this team. Treliving made some shrewd pickups and we're developing a nice identity under Berube.

Was funny listening to the Habs in the offseason talking like they were turning the corner with a awesome young core. They are complete trash in every area. If Montembeault didn't have the literally game of his life opening night we would have crushed them there as well. The cutest part is some Habs fans actually think Laine was going to be a 40+ goal difference maker to this lineup.

Also honest question, why did people ever think Josh Anderson was something good? Guy has 1 year over 20 goals and 40 pts and has been a complete plug the rest of his career but for years people talked like he would be 25g every year. Thankfully now it's only Habs fans that delusional.
