He was okay, just okay.

Not gonna say Campbell was amazing as he didn't get much work and only had to make a good save or two, but I like that he at least looks mostly steady and calm in net and isn't floppy and all over the place like Andersen is alot of the time.

The calmness in net is critical. When the goalie starts to panic it can spread to the D and the rest of the team. Before you know it they are all panicking in their own end and get away from the game plan.

Some of that happened in game 2. Freddy has lost his confidence and the team has lost confidence in him.

They can't play it safe they still gotta try to make cute plays in their own zone instead of up and out to fight again.
It's weird, I want to say they need to play it safe, but that's what led to the Rielly turnover and second Marner turnover at the red line.

The need confidence really, someone to take control. The have it in some areas, but not in all zones.

A guy like Kane doesn't miss those plays Marner did in the final minute, especially not 3 times. A guy like prime Keith or current Hedman takes a soft dump that Rielly got behind the net to kill time for an easy out instead of a panic chop behind him. Crosby steps into the traffic and trouble in the final 15 seconds to win a battle, he doesn't try fishing out pucks like Matthews did.

They need to be better in these areas and show a killer instinct

Yes, they did. Just like Freddy did. And because Freddy couldn't save the puck yesterday, it changes how the entire team plays.
And part of the reason the rest of the team sucked yesterday was because they were forced to play defensively.
You can't take the risks we took tonight if every time you make a mistake it ends up in your net.

Same context, just expanded.

what risks? how many breakaways did we give them tonight? how many odd man chances did we give them tonight?

jeezzz.....

I bet you if campbell gets the most starts you this entire board will turn on him because he is not capable of handing the workload. He has a .865 SV% tonight.

Gave the team a chance to win, which can't be said about Andersen most of the time lately. He probably would've liked to have that 2nd goal though.

That second goal was unbelievable though. It probably caught him off guard.

Like others have said, Campbell wasn't spectacular, and he didn't need to be. He was just solid and made all the routine saves.

If we could get that from Freddy on a regular basis, people wouldn't be complaining.

Campbell let in a weak one but overall he brought stability. We may just have to make do with one of the weaker tandems in the NHL.

Marner looked incredible all night.

Tavares had a very good game I thought, even with no points.

Bogo needs a break.

No, they showed up fine, we did fine in the first. They didn't start collapsing until the goals started pouring in.
Comparing this game to last game is like comparing apples to oranges.
We did a terrible job of clearing the crease, Andersen did play bad, but not as bad as some make it out to be, Reilly and Brodie had probably their worst games and in general Matthews Marner Nylander Tavares couldn’t get anything going yesterday. May I remind you that we were outshot by Ottawa 24-23. Saying the team showed up fine when our players had a terrible game isn’t true, and the argument that we played defensive isn’t going to cut it with the roster we have, we payed big bucks to the forwards to be difference makers, and last game, they were not.

Yeah that play by Marner with about 0:50 left instead of dumping it deep at their blue line he tried some Jr move and lost the puck. I know they wanto play puck possession but sometimes better to move it.

I think Jumbo and Bogo will have some words about that as the season goes on and that will back up what Spezza and Muzzin probably were harping on last year.

Campbell was fairly solid. And that big save I don't think it was on net but it was good nonetheless.

Anyway too soon for this type of goalie controversy. The team played way better tonight all around. Way better. Freddie would have done well tonight too I think.

There is a controversy.
The controversy isn't whether Campbell should be the #1 or backup.
But will Andersen continue to struggle and will he lose his starter position if he continues to suck and will he be back next year.
I’m pretty sure most of us expect Andersen to be gone next year. A combination of his asking price + his playoff success leads a lot of the fanbase to expect us to move on from him and try out a complete 1A/1B tandem
