Leafs 2024 draft pick stock is getting quietly full.

They have 9 picks overall in the 2024 draft, and 3 5th rounders.

They are only missing a 2nd.

In fact they have 5 5th rounders over the next 2 years

I didn't mind Lafferty but pleased to get a pick for him rather than losing him for nothing.

It seems like Tampa/COL are both looking for goalies. Would be nice if one of them would try to jump the line and trade a pick for Jones rather than losing him for nothing but I won't hold my breath.

Not going to scoff at acquiring picks but there is a grand total of 2 regular NHLers from the 5th round of the 2017 draft, maybe 2 from the 2018 draft, 1 from the 2019 draft, 1 from the 2016 draft. You have to go back to the 2015 draft before seeing some impact from the 5th round.

Gregor-Kampf-Holmberg is still fine, Reaves is a mistake though. The idea is ok as a Simmonds replacement for 30 games a year and whatever he does in the locker room but 3 years at that money is insane.

I'm fine with Holmberg playing too... I think he is super underrated.

Interesting that for next year's draft, we currently have our 1st, the Islanders 3rd, our 5th, Chicago's 5th, Vancouver's 5th, our 6th, Ottawa's 7th, and our 7th. Eight picks in total, obviously skewing to the back half of the draft.

Actually, it's nine picks, as we also still have our 4th. We'll see where we stand after the trade deadline.

Treliving sold low on Lafferty, so I wouldn't include that in the trade... I swear people were talking about him being worth a high-ish pick by himself last year.

McCabe is still good value for another 2 seasons.

It isn't a bad trade.

If he wasn’t in their plans, at least they got a pick and cleared cap space instead of losing him on waivers for nothing.

I prefer a line of quick skilled players who can be trusted defensively and can chip in offensively here and there over a line with two of those players and one liability who will probably beat up 5-10 people this year and deter no one from targeting our players, but hey, that's just me.

5th rounder aside, I would much rather have Robertson, McMann, Holmberg, Abruzzese, etc competing for spots rather than Lafferty taking up space and keeping younger guys from getting opportunities - especially considering they're all 300k cheaper. Pretty happy with this
