That isn't really very much cap space gained. 300K if Minten is his substitute. I guess with Martin Jones on waivers and possibly Timmins on the LTIR it's just enough to make the cap with zero healthy scratches. Too bad the Leafs couldn't have kept Lafferty around.

Not sure how I feel about this. I guess he wasn't great for us at all - last year, the playoffs, or in the preseason. But I do believe he's better than he's shown. Great speed. Solid penalty killer. Very physical. Can drop them when he needs to. Can show a bit of skill here and there. All for just 1 million. That's the exact kind of player we want on our fourth line...maybe third. That's something this team needs.

But again...he pretty much showed none of that with us. So I just don't know how to feel.

He did not do well most games with the Leafs. He has low IQ with the puck and really struggled in the offensive zone. He was invisible way too much. He just didn't seem to fit for whatever reason. He's a good skater that can forecheck well though.

A 5th round pick isn't much but it's something.
Scored a nice goal from a dirty area last night. I'm not losing sleep over this but I preferred to keep him. Shows me that Reaves will be our full time #4RW. Now we wait to see who gets the #3C spot.

And just did nothing the entirety of pre-season and since acquired last season.

I'll be clear to say that Lafferty is a far superior player to Reaves in almost every way except throwing punches. It was clear who should have been kept, but Lafferty was very average in his time here and kept getting outplayed by younger and other depth players.

I like the trade. Get a mid round pick for our overpriced surplus. Feels like something we haven't done that well since at least 2021. Otherwise it wasn't too difficult to replace Lafferty with a cheaper Gregor and maybe an ELC in Minten.
Interesting that for next year's draft, we currently have our 1st, the Islanders 3rd, our 5th, Chicago's 5th, Vancouver's 5th, our 6th, Ottawa's 7th, and our 7th. Eight picks in total, obviously skewing to the back half of the draft.

Martin Jones clearing would be very useful. The team's goaltending depth is very young and raw. Pretty much none of them should be in the NHL at this stage. The most experienced one, Petruzzelli, had a horrible 2nd half in 2022-23.

It's fine/meh. Lafferty is an NHL caliber player, but didn't show anything worth lamenting losing and he can likely be replaced for cheaper when the Leafs need as many free dollars as possible. The pick is better than a waivers loss

Good to see Leafs management gettinng something instead of losing players (ex: Hyman) for nothing !

rumours are that tampa is gonna snag him as they need a goalie with Vasy out for the foreseeable future

He wasn't noticeably better than an Aube-Kubel, Aston-Reese or an incoming Gregor. I think they probably brought him in to be a speedy Engvall/Mikheyev type closer to the third line but seemed to be more of a 4th liner.

I'd also expect Lafferty to have a bigger role in Vancouver and could see him flipped for a slightly higher pick come deadline day.
