How could people not see something like this coming?

No contract room but 4 PTO's with legit shots at 1 year deals.

Grabner is essentially on a 1 year deal as a UFA.

5 prospects with bottom of the roster potential for an expiring NHL contract that allows us to sign 4 more expiring contracts. Makes perfect sense for a team trying to hoard draft picks while getting rid of what the last management group brought in to give players like Joly room to try and make the Marlies.

Analyzing the trade.

Mark Hunter simply ranked the Leafs prospect pool in his order then Lou Lam looped off 5 from the bottom % of that list to free up contract space to add higher potential prospects in the future.

Grabner might be parlayed into one of those picks at the TD with the pick with a decent season.

Excellent Trade only guy with real value we gave up was Verhague and he is still just a prospect that may never pan out, plus the fact we just freed up more contract space. Grabner when healthy can score thirty goals. The move makes you wonder about how quick this rebuild will take or is this another chip for the deadline(low first rounder).

Then you are severely overrating Grabner. As a rental, I'm thinking that we could probably get a 3rd for him, unless he turns things around a lot.
Expiring contracts that can provide some scoring or defense went for crazy packages last year. Its not crazy to think that getting top line minutes in TO that he won't be able to produce points and be a sought after commodity at the deadline.

If those players were on AHL deals we would have kept them to fill out the roster. But they were on NHL contracts and management didn't believe they had much of a future in the NHL...so get rid of them, we can only have 50. Maybe they're better than Findlay, Watling, Rodewald, etc...but guess what, those players can round out an AHL roster/ECHL roster just as good as the others yet they don't take up a spot.

We just traded some prospects and with you being a prospect fanboy
You must be upset
As Rob Faulds would say "whada ya think about that"?

Difficult to say what the market was...in theory you might be right but how much can you sell Beck for on the market? a 7th? - People need to want the prospects etc.

Like I said it concerns me that all it takes is for 1 of the prospects panning out for us to look stupid on the trade...Grabner had better perform with good minutes and get us a nice pick at the deadline.

Well I see the value of the trade as TBD...Those spots we open up and what we do with them will ultimately give us a true value. This is one of those deals that seems a bit wtf to some people now but later on this year when we make a few deals and have the room to take on contracts to make them work it will seem like a genius plan all along. That's where I place the value for Lou and company atm. Grabner is just another player we can possibly flip and at worst... he is done at the end of the year and ties up 0 cap space.

He also keeps a prospect with the Marlies for what should be a damn exciting year and run at a championship there. I think that kind of experience for our youth will be invaluable.

Win Win

I see Grabner being worth as much as a late 1st round pick if he plays like he has in the past.

I love this move.

Grabner's gonna get a good opportnity to rebound this year. We have no real skilled RWers other than PAP, so I expect him to get some solid top 6 and PP minutes.

I think there's a good chance he scores 20 + this year and we add a 2nd rounder for him at the deadline.

Quite the deal.

I understand what they're trying to: Dump some contracts, while improving the team. Finn's season last year was a disaster and so he was a prime candidate for a contract dump, as were Gibson and Beck. So the deal is really Nilsson and Verhaeghe for Grabner, which is not terrible, but I think I'd prefer to keep our prospects. I don't see what Grabner, who is also a pending UFA, really brings to this team in the long-run.

If he pots us 15-20 and we can flip him at the deadline, then I'm on board.

The guy can flat-out fly, but he's made of glass so I'm waiting to see who gets injured first, him or Loops.

How can people complain that we are giving away prospects? I've seen like 4 threads eventually end up discussing how we have so many picks and prospects that we can't fit them all. A guy like Casey Bailey, with a legit chance to play NHL games this season, ranked in the 20's on our prospect list.

In the "how many picks can we acquire" thread some posters were saying we will have to let decent prospects walk in the near future to fit all the upcoming picks in the 50 contract limit. I myself said "We could see some prospect depth moved for modest returns, also. Colborne for a 4th. Ashton and Broll moved for a conditional 6th. That kind of thing." (link)

So now that we do trim some of the fat, everyone is up in arms? We gave up long-shot prospects, and replaceable parts for a top 6 forward, AND flexibility to make more changes.

Win-win.

Plus as far as the end value of the trade goes, you have to consider what the Leafs do with these contract spots. It isn't just Grabner we could be trading come deadline, but also guys like Boyes and Seto and given that without the trade these guys don't get signed it's fair to include whatever value they end up having as part of it imho.

Expiring contracts that can provide some scoring or defense went for crazy packages last year. Its not crazy to think that getting top line minutes in TO that he won't be able to produce points and be a sought after commodity at the deadline.

He was a healthy scratch in the playoffs for the Isles last season. That's highly unlikely. More likely is his decline will continue this season.
