So...was this plan B?

This comes on the wake of Treliving not being able to land Markström.

With all due respect to everyone here who is excited, but this is the fallback plan no?

I like Woll. He's great when he's healthy. Sadly he's never been healthy, so (sorry folks) he's not great.

Edited out the cynical last paragraph.

I'm torn. I wanted to get Woll extended early, but something around or just below 3 is what I was thinking. I have faith in him but his injury concerns are very real. Sure there's LTIR but most of his injuries have been a month or 2. You can't really use the space on anyone when someone gets injured and will be back in 2 months as then you'd have to shed the money when they come back.

I'm more for it than against it as I like to sign guys ahead of them breaking out. But I still have my concerns.

I’m happy with this. If he has a season where he plays at his regular level and gets to 50 games he probably could’ve got the Jarry contract from us.

Edited out the cynical last paragraph.

Markstrom at 4.1M for 2 years and then there would be a year overlap where Woll is earning say 3.5M

7.6M for 2 goalies isn't bad.

Shesterkin is going to pull 8.75-10M soon (depending how badly he wants to cash in)

I think the Leafs likely add Stolarz, Talbot or Broissoit for 2-3 years around 2.5M so if you come in at 6M for goaltending, that's not bad, provided Woll gets over the injury bug.

Evaluate after he has this summer to figure out what he needs to do to be more healthy.

Maybe they can’t get Markstrom because of the money they are going to have to pay the core 4 next season

They couldn't get Markstrom because it would've taken an overpay from the Leafs because of hurt feelings with Calgary.

They had a comparable offer.

This is a gamble that makes too much sense. If he keeps outplaying our starting goalie in the playoffs 3 straight years the number will be even higher. He was better 2 years in a row so the record is there and he's got tons of time to figure out injury issues. All kinds of road for this player. Realistically how much less could he have been paid. Nice stuff Brad

I think the plan was to have them both and run a tandem until Markstrom ages and Woll establishes himself as a 50+ game goalie

Expecting Tre to acquire a 1B goalie before the season starts

For sure, even if they obtained another goalie, they would have been extending Woll into the future. Assuming he can stay healthy, there is no question he can be a #1 goalie in this league. Also, Hildeby likely makes the NHL in a year or two as well... so it really doesn't seem to make much sense, to really spend huge assets, or huge term on a goalie right now. I get wanting to compete RIGHT now, and we should, but we have other areas that need focus moreso.

3.75M per maybe?

Or maybe it's $3, or $2.75... it's just someone speculating.

To those who kept saying once JT is off his 11mil cap, Leafs will have a money to get new players….but as I said before that 11mil will end up going to Woll, Knies and Holmberg new deal.
Woll’s new deal will cost 2.5-3mil less from the bye bye JT fun.
If JT is resign at 4mil, then that’s only 4mil remaining from his 11mil cap hit. Pretty sure 3mil of that will be toward Knies new deal. The remaining 1mil will be toward Holmberg’s new deal.

A lot of money and term for an injury prone goalie. Knowing the liklihood of him getting injured, we are going to need another goalie who can handle 40+ games if needed. Not loving the options out there.

I'd be good with the deal if he goes on LTIR for the first half of the season along with Tavares and they return for the second half and playoffs.
Vegas has their cap runaround, we have Robidas Island…….
