and if he comes off LTIR, he'll play.. which is just fine.

LTIR is not retirement....

The way it was suggested, it is retirement basically... if the contract doesn't work out, just LTIR.

We need to be able to re-activate him after LTIR.

My point is, him on LTIR is a negative, whereas someone like Murray being on for the year, it is usable cap.

I don't think the contract is terrible, just think people talking about him on LTIR is premature.

It will be a good deal if he stays healthy and so far he has had issues with injuries

This fanbase is just addicted to being outraged I think.

I think for some that’s definitely true. I don’t mind the gamble but I do think it’s fair to say it’s rich based on what Woll has actually accomplished at this level thus far. We’ll see how it turns out.

Assuming our 2nd tender costs around 3-3.5M we’ll be setup for about 6.5-7.5M on goaltending starting next year which is not egregious. Especially if we have two very capable goaltenders for that expenditure.

It isn't a good contract... or at least a deserved contract.

I don't see any overreactions, just people confused about how his body of work equals that contract.

I don't think anyone is outraged.

It absolutely is a good contract. Samsonov was just awarded 3.55 for a similar season Woll had in arbitration at the same age. Woll is as good as Samsonov. He has more potential. This is based off a higher cap. It's basically just under Samsonov's pay. Its avoiding arbitration and potentially walking Woll to UFA after next season.

We spent years having folks say we could have signed Marner for 9M the summer before. Now we sign Woll and people say it was a bad deal. You will all be back in this thread next summer looking like fools imo

It's always usable cap.... maybe you don't understand LTIR?

The only reason you pay him now, is because you're worried he costs more next year, which confirms the Leafs will give him 50-60 outright starter games this year. No way we're making a big goalie move now, it's Woll and a solid backup that could potentially offer more.

If he's healthy great move, but he never has been, so it's a stretch.

Once again rewarding players for having accomplished nothing.
Exactly !!! If he plays against the Bruins in game 7, and shuts them out for the series win, then by all means, pay him $4.0M.

Come on, he can't stay healthy, and hasn't proved himself playing over at least 100 NHL games with consistently acceptable results.

Treliving needs to to go already, unless this is directly a decision made by Shanahan !!!

Maybe, it's been Shanahan all along responsible for ALL the OVER PAYMENTS !!!

Near risk free as he is uber talented. If he continues to have injury problems we LTIR his contract. If he stays healthy, we got a 1A for under 4% of the cap moving forward. I like it.

Did Woll have a better season than Samsanov when he was awarded his contract?

Woll played 28 games last season (including playoffs).

This contract should be signed if he has a good season next year.

I am not mad at the contract, it just seems premature.

I think people declaring this a win look like a fool currently.

True, every move they make must be terrible then.

You seem addicted to outrage. Be a good customer and just buy, don't dare question anything about our God Kings, the Maple Leafs. Nevermind how the league operates. Nevermind how the teams thar are actually good conduct business. New beiber jersey is in the mail!

Ballsy roll of the dice. I like it.
If he can stay healthy and keep up his play we just locked up our 1A for the remainder of the Matthews contract.

Woll is clearly a insanely talented goalie. I don't think there's any question about his upside.
This will strictly come down to how healthy he can stay. If they can figure this problem out and he can become dependable, this contract will look like quite the steal. If he continues to get injured and not be reliable, it could look questionable.

and they did say they were going to figure it out. like it easily could just be how he stretches or trains and they sort of have a handle on it.

I think this equates to the 26th or 27th highest goalie salary in the NHL, according to a tweet I saw.

let me make sure i have this straight.

a lot of people here whinge that why couldn't management take a risk and sign a cheaper deal with our RFAS before they broke out so it looked like a deal. and now those same people are whinging because our GM did exactly that?

For a guy with Tie Domi as his user you should have been a fan long enough to know what true mismanagement looks like.

Several people here have their own agendas, any moves the current GM made would be a bad one under any circumstances.

basically so they can always be right.

honestly. that deal looks like (to me) if the guy can stay healthy and take off - it's a steal. (and they said they were gonna work with him so that won;t be an issue). and if it's NOT - he still has the talent/capability that SOME team will take it on anyway. AND more importantly - you get it done before he takes off and it's not so ergious if he's just middle of the road. either.

I imagine they would have considered delaying this if they had acquired a number one goalie, but I think this is a pretty clear signal that they are going to sign one of the back-up UFAs and let Woll play 40-50 games. I think people are overblowing the injury issues.
