Best leaf game Ive watched in a long time. They fought, hit and played with toughness! The speed and skill came after.. Always in the playoffs you need to put toughness and grit first! Skill and speed second. The leafs figured it out last night. Keep it up leafs!

Not sure what to make of this from moneypuck, weird to see M&M so low. Maybe this is why I believe that advanced stats for indicidual players aren't very useful. Anyhow, I don't care what the stats say, Marner was a superstar for the way he played in the 1st minute of the game.

Go with what your eyes tell you .. screw all da stupid stats which are meaningless .. everyone I know saw it same way Rielly was BY FAR best man on ice .. he tilted that game with support from Schenn .. Matty and Mitch were better last night but bottom line did not influence that game either way .. they are just too slow on footspeed

Single game advance stats in general are pretty meaningless.

Most xG models are made to incorporate some bias so the model isn’t overfitted to the prior/training data. The bias is balanced out later with a larger sample/testinng data that reduces error.

That being said, I do actually think the top line was the worst at 5v5 last night. Marner’s second goal went it, but would’ve barely registered in terms of xG because it was basically a nothing shot.

Tampa is also hyper focused on Matthews for both the PP and ES which is opening up the Leafs superior depth, especially with Tampa's injuries.

If we can avoid refs that call a million penalties to disurpt games, I dont think Tampa has an answer....that is if our goaltending holds up.

Top 15 forwards for playoff points per game the last 4 years (including this one, min 20 games played):

1. Drai
2. McDavid
3. Mackinnon
4. Kucherov
5. Ranatanen
6. Matthews
7. Point
8. Marchand
9. Landeskog
10. Zibanejad
11. Pastrnak
12. Perron
13. Nylander
14. Marner
15. O'Reilly
I remember lots of people on here ripping on how bad Draisaitl is…..

You can definitely see the uptick in intensity throughout the lineup. Something they have lacked for years. Tampa was meh to begin with, take out Hedman and Cernak, they are pretty bad

I'm pretty sure that there's a nasty Facebook virus going around that doesn't let Habs fans post Leafs jokes and memes any more. I was getting all kinds of them the last 2 days and then, just like that, they all stopped last night. :tvhappy:
I hear ya. I have a few friends who are Habs fans and they made sure to send me lots of memes after game one. Haven’t heard anything from them about game two.:D

Praying the Leafs don’t let themselves get intimidated on the road. If they can just realize that the way they played last night, is their recipe for success, they will slay the dragon!

My stray thoughts from the game:

1- Tavares is my favourite current Leaf. He doesn't get enough love on HF.

2- Marner's early goal got rid of his jitters. Don't care what his corsi numbers were, he played with purpose.

3- At no point did anyone miss Bunting. Not teammates, coaches, or fans.

4- Samsonov is the long term solution in net. We're officially off the goalie carousel, in my opinion.

5- Perry was the only noticeable TB player all game. Seen Stamkos? Whocherov? They were MIA.

6- The D pairings worked like gangbusters. Don't change as long as they stay healthy.

7- Luke Schenn

8- The Leafs will win this series. Vasi will make sure of it. He's too run down. I'd honestly rather face him in game 3 than Elliott. Even if the rest of TB gets back to playing great, Vasi's going to lose them the series.

Yeah there was a moment yesterday when Matthews had the puck and he had 3 Tampa players draped over him. Somehow he’s able to keep it away from them and pass the puck to Holl who quite literally had a wide open lane to the net to do anything, and he instead takes the puck into the corner where he proceeded to lose it haha

Obviously small sample sizes, but..

Gio/Holl are at 50%.

4th line is doing really well too (no other Leafs lines have played enough)

Ouch.

Goalie duel.

It's insane the Leafs have 3 out of the top 15 ( not including ROR) and they have never got out of the first round.

This kind of pokes a few holes that they don't show up. I guess they need to all get to top 10

Agree to disagree. Getting the first goal last night after the game 1 debacle was crucial. Before the game was one minute old, Marner drew a penalty and scored on the ensuing PP. That set the tone for the rest of the game and for that alone I make him my 1st star selection and he looked pretty good to me the rest of the game as well.

Points can also be deceiving. Were they useless points in a blowout etc. They tend to play ok until it’s time to put teams away, than the trouble begins. Hopefully when they put Tampa to bed, that mental hurdle will be gone

I was expecting that type of result last night given how game 1 went.

I suspect there will be no more blowouts and the real grind will start next game.

Sometimes everything is deceiving. Analytics would have Matthews and Marner played much better Tue than last night. They both put up the exact amount of points Tue but they also carried play much better Tue.

The Montreal series they were all over the place and around the net but for whatever reason couldn't score.

But I 100% agree with you. Hopefully this year they win a round and never look back.

What exactly is he supposed to say?

"Yeah their guys are better than ours"? Lol
Idk but he’s usually worded his words much more ambiguously

He’s made sure in the past his words couldn’t be used against him as motivation for the leafs

I think this is something the 3 centres, and especially Matthews can use as fuel for the next couple games

He didn't have to make it a competition. Its the opposite of the path he usually takes. He usually would say "Matthews Tavares and ROR are ALL WORLD players, they don't back down, and will not go down easy" in an effort to draw the attention away from his players and onto ours. Instead he put all the pressure solely on his own players. Very different approach from him. He didn't have to bring his players into it AT ALL.
